In some cases, a prescription product may be necessary.

    Moisturizers For Nummular Dermatitis

Nummular dermatitis is an eczematous disorder with pruritic coin-shaped patches on the skin that are often mistaken for ringworm or psoriasis. Men usually get nummular dermatitis later in their life while women get it sooner. The etiology is unknown, but most patients have very dry skin, which allow epidermal breach and permeation of allergens.83,84 Local trauma, such as arthropod bites, chemicals contact, or abrasions, may precede an outbreak.

Contact dermatitis due to nickel, cobalt, or chromates may play a role in some nummular dermatitis cases. Venous insufficiency, stasis dermatitis, and edema may be related to involvement of lower extremities.85,86 Autoeczematization may account for the presence of multiple plaques. Severe, generalized nummular dermatitis has been associated with interferon and ribavirin therapy for hepatitis C and tumor necrosis factor inhibitors.87,88

Patients may complain of pruritic, burning or stinging eruption that usually starts on the legs within days to months. Symptoms wax and wane with winter cold or dry climates, are exacerbated by temperature swings and may improve with sunlight, humidity exposure or moisturizer use. Lesion recurrence in previous lesion locations is frequent. Patient may reveal past history of eczema, atopic dermatitis, or dry and sensitive skin.85

What Ingredients Are Best To Help Treat Eczema

Eczema is a clinical dysfunction of the skin barrier, Dr. Libby notes. As such, genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors contribute to its flare-up, but its a priority to repair the skin barrier. Namely, ingredients to help reverse eczematic effects are humectants, emollients and occlusive moisturizers.

According to Dr. Libby, humectants help add moisture back to the skin, while emollients add back oils, lubricating and softening the skin. Occlusive moisturizers work to prevent transepidermal water loss .

Common humectants are glycerin, lactic acid, urea and hyaluronic acid, Dr. Libby adds. Emollients examples are glycol and glyceryl stearate, soy sterols, squalane, and oils like jojoba, sweet almond, etc. Common occlusives are petrolatum, dimethicone, shea butter and mineral oil.

    Humectants Bring In Moisture

Humectants are designed to try and draw moisture into the skin, Dr. Anthony explains. They attract and bind to water, pulling it from the air and from deeper within your skin. They include:

    • Aloe vera.
    • Alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic acid and lactic acid.
    • Hyaluronic acid.
    • Urea .

Applied on their own, humectants can cause stinging and burning. Instead, eczema creams combine these ingredients with more soothing emollients and occlusives.

    For Comfort And Healing

Many types of eczema cream include ingredients to not only help stop the itch, but to calm and soothe your skin as it heals. Creams made with natural ingredients can also be safe to use over time without breaking down the skin. Choose from options for the body and the face. You can also find baby eczema cream to help relieve your little one?s symptoms.

What To Look For In An Eczema Cream

Hydration makes for happy skin. If you have eczema, its extremely important to keep your skin hydrated, Dr. Anthony says.

In looking for an eczema product, there are three categories of ingredients to know about:

  • Emollients help repair your skin barrier.
  • Humectants draw moisture into your skin.
  • Occlusives lock in moisture and hydration.
  • You see all three of them in some of the products we use for eczema, Dr. Anthony explains. And some popular ingredients pull double duty, acting, for example, as both humectant and occlusive, or emollient and occlusive, which can make things confusing.

He walks us through the categories, including ingredients to look for.

Ingredients To Avoid If You Have Eczema

Remember: What works well for the general population isnt always best for eczema. There are lots of products that can be hydrating, soothing and overall beneficial to people who have standard dry skin but many of those same products can worsen dry skin caused by eczema.

Dr. Anthony says his eczema recommendations are informed by his work with patients who have contact dermatitis . Skin with eczema is especially sensitive, so although you may not currently be allergic to any of the products he recommends avoiding, it certainly cant hurt to go without them.

For patients with atopic dermatitis, theres more chance of exposure to possible allergens, which can complicate their condition and treatment, he says. So while none of these are absolutes, I usually start with some general rules.

    Moisturizers For Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a common skin inflammation characterized by pruritic and erythematous skin lesions induced by contact with foreign substances. It is divided into two major groups: irritant and allergic.73

Clinical manifestation of contact dermatitis varies according to the causative allergen or irritant and the skins affected area. Contact dermatitis usually appears as erythema and scaling with relatively well-demarcated, visible borders. The hands, face, and neck are usually involved, although it may occur in any area. Some contact dermatitis manifestations can be both allergic and irritant. Patients may complain of itching and discomfort, but some seek medical care due to the appearance of a rash. Acute cases may involve a dramatic flare with erythema, vesicles, and bullae chronic cases may involve lichen with cracks and fissures. Patient history is crucial for diagnosis, and causative substance must be identified and avoided to resolve contact dermatitis and prevent further aggravation.73,74

Patients with contact dermatitis should wash their skin using lukewarm water with mild soap and dry it gently. Soap should be removed carefully from finger web spaces as it is a surface-active agent, providing alkaline environment which is not gentle for the skin. Jewelry, including rings, could trap allergens and retain local moisture.74,75
