Ive Had Eczema My Whole Life These Are The Products That Really Work For Me

Typically, eczema isnt something that we address much in the beauty industry. Unlike acne or rosacea, there arent many readily available products or treatments that target the issue, so I did the only thing Id ever really known and made an appointment with my GP.

My first prescription was Diprobase, a super-thick emollient cream that deposits a layer of oil on the surface of the skin to prevent water loss and make skin feel less dry. But as someone who is also prone to acne, slathering it on nightly only broke me out in spots.

It also contains paraffin oils, which not only smell pretty suffocating but are also flammable, and that really put me off. After a month or so of putting up with the condition, I went back to my GP and came away with Dermol, yet another emollient lotion, which only made my skin greasy, sticky and just generally uncomfortable.

Not happy with my doctors help, I finally booked an appointment with a dermatologist, who prescribed me a cream Id never tried before: Elidel 1%, which contains the active ingredient pimecrolimus to treat the inflammation, redness and itching that are the result of eczema. Getting my hands on it was no mean feat, though. My nearest pharmacies had trouble calling it in, and when it did arrive, it cost me over £25 for a 30g tube.

Aveeno Vs Cerave: Different Ingredients

To make things short, CeraVe is a better product. Both do have their problematic ingredients however.

Aveeno uses a key ingredient called Avena Sativa which is one of their unique selling points.Petrolatum is another which is an emollient that soften and soothes skin by preventing moisture loss from the skin. Although it sounds like a good function, it does have the possibility of causing skin irritation. It is a prohibited substance in cosmetic products in the European Union.

The damaging ingredient in the Aveeno moisturizing lotion is Benzyl Alcohol. It is an ingredient used in skin lotions due its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is quite common in moisturizing creams for Eczema.

CeraVe has one single ingredient that stands out and can be problematic, Phenoxyethanol. It has been reported as harmful if absorbed through skin, causing irritation and blistering. This makes Phenoxyethanol a potential health concern for Eczema sufferers like ourselves. Another ingredient in some versions of the moisturizing lotion that needs to be highlighted is Methylparaben. It can cause serious skin irritation, especially for the eyes!

Phenoxyethanol is an interesting ingredient as it is now banned in Palau due to the damages it can cause to coral reefs. If it can cause long lasting damages to the aquatic wildlife, the question is, what kind of damage can do to our skin?

To get an experts opinion on these products, you should consult a dermatologist to get the best possible advice as they are the experts! You should get an allergy test to check whether you are compatible with the ingredients noted.

Personally I had a better reaction to CeraVe than Cetaphil. With CeraVe I saw progression and healing with my Eczema. My skin was still quite dry but the redness and even Cetaphil I had a burning sensation and my skin got very irritated. I trialled the cream on my skin for around 2 weeks but my skin was irritated throughout the process. My skin was red and was very uncomfortable because of the burning sensation.

So if you want a recommendation from me, I would choose CeraVe over Cetaphil. It is a far superior moisturizer for those with sensitive skin with advanced ingredients and a stamp of approval from the National Eczema Association.

Theoretically, here is what many blogs out there are saying even though they have never taken the time to use these products themselves:

Even though this is true because Cerave has more hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and 3 types of ceramides.

In the past, it was even acceptable to establish such binary compassion.

But nowadays both lines expanded and created a series of products for oily skin, sensitive skin, dry skin, etc.

In real life, both Cerave and Cetaphil will do almost the same job in the long term.

And the difference between them wont really be very significant in the final result and both will hydrate your skin at the end of the day.

The main difference will be in texture, smell, how well they spread on your body, if they feel sticky or comfortable on your skin, things like that.

You should be able to judge these products based on your first impressions, on how you feel and prefer each brand.

Both products have different texture and application that is also worth noting. Normally when we put on moisturizer we can make a judgement as to whether to continue using it based on the feel.

If you are going for smell, both are fragrance-free which is a MUST for Eczema users. We dont judge moisturizers based on smell, it is how effective it is that counts!

CeraVe has a similar texture to Cetaphil, though from my personal experience I found that the Cetaphil moisturizer to be a bit lighter and more oily. I found CeraVe to be more effective in hydrating my skin than Cetaphil, but that saying I had to apply more of it. Cetaphil spreads easily on the skin.
