Can I Go Swimming If I Have A Skin Condition

3 reasons your ECZEMA AND DERMATITIS will not GO AWAY

Swimming in the ocean or in a pool will not transmit your skin condition to other people. That said, going swimming may irritate your skin and cause you to experience an uncomfortable flare-up. Cleaning your body after you swim and carefully patting your skin dry can decrease your chances of experiencing irritation. Applying a gentle moisturizing cream may also prevent your skin from becoming excessively dry.

How Do I Know If I Have Eczema

If you have eczema, the rash may go away at first. But then it comes back again and again.

Not all rashes itch. But eczema is itchy, itchy, itchy! It often starts in the folds inside your elbows and on the back of your knees. It can also be on your face and other parts of your body. Many things besides eczema can cause a rash. Thats why your doctor is the best person to see to figure out whats causing your rash.

Different Stages Of Eczema

A persons eczema can present in various stages, including:

  • acute: This may be the first time a person notices eczema symptoms, which can present as a rash that starts to itch.
  • subacute: This refers to when the condition is between the acute and chronic stages. Itching may reduce, but the skin can appear flaky, cracked, or red.
  • chronic: In this stage, the eczema symptoms may last for several months or longer. Itching can be intense, while rashes may cover a larger area of the skin.

There are different kinds of eczema. Here we look briefly at each type.

Take warm baths or showers and keep them short. Long, hot showers can dry out your skin, making it more prone to flare-ups. Use unscented bath products, and not too much of them. When youre done, use a soft towel to pat yourself dry. Dont rub. Slather moisturizer on your skin immediately after a shower, while your skin is still damp, to help your skin best absorb the moisture and lock it on.

Getting An Initial Consultation

When you come in for your initial meeting, Dr. Jurzyk will carefully examine your skin and discuss all of your symptoms. He will also ask you about the activities that you were engaging in before your flare-up began.

In addition to discussing these activities, you should be prepared to talk about any detergents, skincare products, and supplements that you have recently started using. Talking about these substances will help Dr. Jurzyk identify triggers that are causing you to experience skin issues.

Your Dermatitis Needs A Stronger Steroid Or Different Medication

People often use the terms “eczema” and “dermatitis” to mean the same thing. When someone says they have “eczema,” usually what they mean is they have atopic dermatitis. It is the most common subtype of eczema. Experts believe atopic dermatitis results from a combination of genes and environmental triggers that overstimulate the immune system.

Eczema is an umbrella term that covers seven specific types:

While they do have a lot in common, these different forms of eczema require different potency steroid creams and different potency of ointments. For instance, dyshidrotic eczema, which usually affects the hands, requires higher dose steroids to go away.

Eczema Coping Tips Avoid Changes In Temperature

Abrupt temperature and humidity changes can sometimes irritate the skin for example, going in and out of air-conditioned buildings on hot days or heated buildings on cold days.Hard physical activity or exercise that makes you sweat heavily can also trigger the itch of eczema.Suggestions include:

  • In winter, dont overheat your house. Dress warmly when going outdoors and remove the extra layers as soon as you return.
  • In summer, dont over cool your house. Air conditioners can dry out the air and irritate your skin.
  • Avoid hard physical activity in hot weather. For example, do your gardening first thing in the morning, or in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky.

When Your Skin Becomes A Battlefield

  • During a flare-up its vital to rigorously adhere to your treatment plan, especially if insufficient emollient application was a contributing factor to your skins relapse.
  • If being unwell has contributed to the current flare its important to treat the symptoms of that illness at the same time, rather than simply soldiering on, as your body will struggle to overcome both without help.
  • A short burst of treatment with topical steroids will enable most people with eczema to bring a flare-up under control. Key points to remember include:
  • If the eczema gets worse and becomes sore, oozy and crusty then it may have become infected and you should seek medical advice, as it will require additional treatment.
  • Keep a diary of your symptoms and a photographic record to share with healthcare professionals. Flare-ups can vary in severity, appearance and the areas affected so its helpful to chart how yours change over time.
  • Prioritise self care as your body wont heal if its run down. Get plenty of rest and sleep, eat well, drink lots of water, dont take on too much and relax. Its easy to say I cant or I dont have the time but, when your skin needs extra support to get back on track, you have to find a way.
  • Dont feel bad about turning down invites if you cant face it and, equally, dont feel compelled to attend. Make sure those closest to you know what a flare-up is like and what it takes out of you, so they understand why sometimes youll need to duck out of plans.

But When We Travel It All Just Magically Disappears

Within a couple weeks of being on the road and allowing her to eat freely in another country, bye-bye eczema. And it leaves me utterly baffled.

The first time this happened we were on the initial leg of our around-the-world trip two years ago, living in Argentina for 3 months. For 6 weeks, I did everything I could to find gluten, grain and dairy free options for this little girl, but as time went on, it proved increasingly difficult to get the things I needed, what with the language and cultural barriers, being on the road and needing to eat out frequently, and all those other things that go along with travel.

So we gave up and began letting her have a little dairy, just some yogurt and cheese at first. When that didnt cause any exacerbation of the problem, we let her eat regular bread with the rest of the family.

And oddly enough, the longer we were out of North America, the more the eczema disappeared.

It stayed away the entire year. She ate anything and everything as we traveled through South America, Europe, the Middle East, East Africa, Asia and Australia.

    Avoid Environmental And Emotional Triggers

Eczema flare-ups can be brought on by environmental and emotional triggers. Make note of when your eczema symptoms start to appear. Do symptoms usually increase during the Spring and Fall when seasonal allergies are at their peak? Are there certain fabric materials that make you itch?

Self-knowledge and awareness will help you identify your own set of triggers so you can avoid them, if possible.

    Medications And Prescribed Treatment

A variety of over-the-counter medications, like oral antihistamines and anti-itch cream can help manage the symptoms of a flare-up.

Symptoms of burning or inflammation can also be managed with acetaminophen , or an anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen .

In more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe an oral corticosteroid , or corticosteroid creams or ointments.

Topical steroids or topical corticosteroids are some of the most commonly prescribed treatments for eczema, as they can reduce inflammation and itching and allow the skin to repair and heal.

These creams vary by strength and should only be used on the affected area.

There is evidence that immunosuppressant drugs may also help manage eczema, which often occurs as a result of immune system overload.

Oral prescription options include azathioprine, cyclosporine, methotrexate, and mycophenolate mofetil.

Does Eczema Go Away With Age

Because eczema typically develops during childhood, many people wonder if eczema will go away with age. We should also note that eczema can develop at any age and on-set adult eczema is indeed a thing.

The good news is that for many people, symptoms subside as they grow older so if you developed the condition as an infant or child, flares up may become less frequent with age. Your eczema may also go through healing stages.

    Be Mindful Of Known Triggers

The first step in minimizing dermatitis outbreaks is recognizing known triggers aka, things that have been shown to cause or worsen symptoms from a dermatological standpoint. In regard to perioral dermatitis , one particular trigger is products with fluoride, Dr. Jennifer Vickers, a dermatologist at Sanova Dermatology in Texas, tells The Zoe Report. Some people improve when they try a more natural toothpaste such as Toms. Ive found this to be true, so I stay far away from fluoride .

Some other common triggers include fragrance , detergents and dryer sheets, and metals like nickel .

Healing Eczema From The Inside Out: Diet & Intestinal Permeability

Intestinal permeability can be a huge factor that affects eczema. I definitely had a leaky gut: I was constantly gassy, had trouble digesting foods, and had tingling sensations in my body when I ate the wrong foods. I saw a strong correlation with my gassyness and my skin.

The more my skin healed, the more my gas and bloating also healed, because my gut was healing! Most people with eczema have gut dysbiosis, since the skin is a reflection of what is happening inside the body. I started healing eczema with diet by eating a lot of probiotics and filled my diet with fermented foods, such as sauerkraut. This improved my digestion and filled my gut with good bacteria to help my skin heal!

Doctors also used to give me antibiotics frequently whenever I was not feeling too well, so I stopped relying on antibiotics . My skin would dry out as a side effect of the antibiotics, so by eliminating/reducing it and relying on natural antibiotics like garlic, onions, and oregano oil, this has kept my gut healthier and happier. Stay away from processed foods as these can definitely affect it as well!

Will My Child Ever Outgrow Eczema

Eczema Cure: The Treatment That Finally Gave Me Some Relief!

A common question amongst parents is: will my child ever outgrow eczema? The normality is that the severity of eczema can be outgrown and usually is. In most cases, dry skin will remain with the individual into adulthood. Other health-related issues tied to eczema such as asthma could also be something that follows into adulthood.

I personally feel like Ive outgrown eczema, but I still have tons of eczema like symptoms I deal with. As a child, my eczema was extremely bad and most of the time not tolerable. I noticed as my teenage years came that my eczema got better. I think based on research and my own experiences many eczema sufferers will outgrow the extreme side of things but may never be able to get rid of it completely. The key is to keep a consistent treatment routine, and it all starts when you are a child.

    Control Inflammation Under Your Skin

If your eczema is mild, your dermatologist may advise you to use hydrocortisone or topical ointment made with corticosteroids to help reduce symptoms.

If youre experiencing an infection from a flare-up, then you may also receive a prescription for antibiotics.

In moderate to severe cases, stronger prescription steroid ointments may be needed to prevent flares and calm inflammation under the skin.

Additional therapies for chronic eczema include:

    • Immunomodulators medicines that suppress the activity of your immune system
    • Biologics medicines made from substances that naturally occur
    • UV light or phototherapy

    Identify And Avoid Triggers

Identifying and avoiding your triggers plays an important role in managing eczema. Common eczema triggers include:

    • Hot or cold temperatures
    • Ingredients in skin care products
    • Certain clothing fibers

Your specific triggers may not be listed here. Recording your symptoms in a daily journal can help you pinpoint potential triggers to help you avoid or minimize flare-ups.

Only About 2 Months After Returning Home Did It Rear Its Ugly Head Again

    It was beyond frustrating.

What intrigued me, though, was that I talked to a few friends about it after we returned and I heard a similar refrain while they were overseas, their skin/digestive/energy/pain problems went away, no matter what they ate. Bread, coffee, cheese, sugary pastries, beer. It didnt matter. It was all fine.

But when they returned to North America? Their problems returned with a vengeance.

This winter, our family has been spending some time living and traveling in Europe .

I determined even before we left that I was going to experiment to see what happened when Johanna left behind her very careful, gluten-free, low grain, more traditional-foods diet back home and just ate whatever food we could find.

Guess what? Within two weeks of arriving in Europe, her eczema began to fade, and now that weve been here 5 weeks, its completely gone. Gone!

Which leads me to the million dollar question WHY on earth is it such a struggle back home and a non-issue while were abroad?

And this is the part of the post where I tell you that I really dont know. Im banging my head against the proverbial wall to come up with a satisfactory answer to this dilemma.
