How Do You Get Eczema On Face

Eczema Around The Eye

Eczema on the face: 11 tips from a dermatologist| Dr Dray

When eczema occurs on the face, it often affects the skin around the eyes or eyelids . Eczema that develops near the eyes needs special attention because the eyes themselves can be affected.

Those with eczema around the eyes are more susceptible to certain eye problems such as conjunctivitis , inflamed cornea, and changes in the shape of the cornea .

But First What Is Eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition that occurs when the skins protective barrier is weaker than it should be.

Without a strong barrier, its easier for moisture to escape the skin and for bacteria and viruses to make their way in. That can lead to dry patches that are red and itchy, especially on the face, hands, feet, inside the elbows, and behind the knees.

The causes of eczema arent fully understood, but its thought that people with eczema have overactive immune systems that cause their skin to become inflamed, irritated, and uncomfortable.

Ready for relief? The below treatments arent a perfect substitute for an Rx, but they do have a combo of promising science and stellar reviews from folks living with eczema.

Food Allergy And Eczema Flare

  • Food allergies are a factor in 30% of young children with severe eczema. This factor is mainly seen in babies.
  • The main allergic foods are cow’s milk and eggs.
  • The main symptoms are increased skin redness and itching. Some parents report these symptoms start during or soon after the feeding.
  • The eczema becomes easier to control if you avoid the allergic food.

Skip Conventional Soaps And Detergents

Many conventional soaps and detergents contain ingredients that can cause dryness. Even fragrance-free formulas can cause irritation to your skin and may lead to eczema flares.

To help reduce eczema on the face, the National Eczema Society recommends using a medical emollient soap substitute instead of a cosmetic face wash or soap. This can help keep your face clean and remove scaling skin.

You may also try washing your sheets, pillowcases, towels, and any other fabrics that touch your face with a sensitive skin-friendly laundry detergent that doesnt contain dyes or scents, per the American Academy of Dermatology . This may help reduce the likelihood of eczema on the face.

Avoiding eczema triggers sounds like an obvious way to prevent flares, but thats easier said than done. Triggers can vary among individuals, and it can be tricky to figure out exactly whats causing your flares.

Plus, once youve identified your eczema triggers, you may face other obstacles in avoiding them.

For example, while many people with eczema are aware that they should avoid products with fragrance, the AAD also says products labeled as unscented should be avoided, as well. These products may not be free of fragrances, and are instead formulated to mask the scent so you cant smell it. The fragrance in the formula can still cause an eczema flare, though.

What Does It Look Like

The signs of eczema in infants include itchy, dry and scaly skin, redness and swelling of the skin and small bumps that open and weep when scratched. In infants and young children, eczema is usually found on the face, outside of the elbows, and on the knees.

In older children and adults, eczema tends to be on the hands and feet, the arms, and on the back of the knees.Keep in mind that all patches of dry skin are not eczema. The cold, dry outdoor air and indoor heating can dry all babies skin in winter, causing dry patches. In children prone to dry skin, so can the sun, air conditioning, and pool and salt water.

We dermatologists usually say if its not itchy, its not eczema you cant make a diagnosis of eczema unless there is an itchiness that goes with the rash. Babies with cradle cap, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, can also have a wide-spread rash, which is not eczema in itself. But it is common for cradle cap and eczema to co-exist in the first several months of life.

How To Use Emollients

Use your emollient all the time, even if youâre not experiencing symptoms.

Many people find it helpful to keep separate supplies of emollients at work or school, or a tub in the bathroom and one in a living area.

To apply the emollient:

  • use a large amount
  • do not rub it in smooth it into the skin in the same direction the hair grows
  • after a bath or shower, gently pat the skin dry and apply the emollient while the skin is still moist to keep the moisture in

You should use an emollient at least twice a day if you can, or more often if you have very dry skin.

During a flare-up, apply generous amounts of emollient more frequently, but remember to treat inflamed skin with a topical corticosteroid as emollients used on their own are not enough to control it.

Do not put your fingers into an emollient pot use a spoon or pump dispenser instead, as this reduces the risk of infection. And never share your emollient with other people.

Covering your hands with gloves before coming into contact with chemicals and irritants can help to get rid of eczema on the hands. You can also try soaking your hands in saline solution to get rid of excess bacteria that may be aggravating the skin.

Additionally, a daily routine using a moisturizer with calming ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal works wonders to soothe any rash on the hands.

Hand eczema is usually rough, dry and inflamed. It can also appear as small filled blisters known as dyshidrotic eczema.

What causes eczema on the hands can be things like bacteria, chemicals and/or irritants such as harsh sulfates in hand soap and chemicals in tap water. Studies suggest that hand eczema may be more common with people in specific occupational groups, such as hairdressers, bakers, and nurses. Possibly due to the high exposure of irritants.

If you struggle with breakouts on the hands, it can be very beneficial to do a trigger avoidance strategy as well as a daily skin routine!

Try To Reduce The Damage From Scratching

Eczema is often itchy, and it can be very tempting to scratch the affected areas of skin.

But scratching usually damages the skin, which can itself cause more eczema to occur.

The skin eventually thickens into leathery areas as a result of chronic scratching.

Deep scratching also causes bleeding and increases the risk of your skin becoming infected or scarred.

Try to reduce scratching whenever possible. You could try gently rubbing your skin with your fingers instead.

If your baby has atopic eczema, anti-scratch mittens may stop them scratching their skin.

Keep your nails short and clean to minimise damage to the skin from unintentional scratching.

Keep your skin covered with light clothing to reduce damage from habitual scratching.

Different “triggers” can make eczema worse. For infants, these can be irritants such as wool, certain detergents or extreme temperatures, or other immune triggers, such as food allergies and asthma, and even pet dander.

Eczema Affects Everyone Differently

How I Cured My Eczema

Eczema affects everyone differently. One persons triggers may not be the same as anothers. You might experience eczema symptoms at certain times of the year or on different areas of your body.

Symptoms of eczema are as varied as the potential environmental factors that can lead to irritation: everyone is affected by this skin disease differently. Regardless of vaccine status, Covid-19 is also a potential trigger for eczema, possibly due to the stress of recovering from the virus, or the bodys heightened immune system response to the virus.

    Eczema On Legs Treatment

    Why Do I Have Eczema?

Similarly to psoriasis, medical professionals will likely first recommend a topical corticosteroid cream to treat eczema. There may also be over-the-counter creams that can help treat the itching. Additionally, there are some effective treatments that involve using a cream as a barrier to protect the skin from irritants and infections. This can give the skin time to heal.

Topical creams can be used in conjunction with wet bandages. This technique requires medical supervision. In some severe cases, it is performed in the hospital under constant monitoring.

More serious cases of eczema may require stronger antibiotic creams or systemic prescription medications such as oral corticosteroids . There are potential serious side effects so they can not be used long term.

Counseling can also be used to help people avoid scratching the affected areas. People also find that talking about their condition with others who have it, can help them from feeling isolated and embarrassed.
