Your Butt Cant Be Too Big

How To Treat Eczema Naturally

Spinal disorders and conditions are taken very seriously by the military. Many of the jobs have stringent physical demands and standards, and having any sort of back issue can be detrimental to your health, and the readiness of the force. However, according to the Tucson recruiting office, as a result of spinal curvature misalignment, your butt can be too big for you to serve. Enough said.

I Used To Take Drugs Can I Still Join

If you have a history of drug dependence, you will need to provide evidence that you have abstained from the use of these drugs for at least the last 3 years prior to joining the Army.A history of occasional use of recreational drugs wonât stop you from joining, but you must stop using any such drugs before you join.

After joining the Army, you must not use recreational drugs. The Army carries out random, compulsory drugs testing, and you can expect to be tested while youâre in training. If you fail any of the tests, youâre very likely be discharged.

Dont Ignore Those Lumps Bumps And Weird Moles On Your Skin

Falls Church, VA, March 4, 2022 â Beware of lumps and bumps.

When it comes to your skin, anything out of the ordinary is a potential cause for concern.

Keep an eye out for moles that are changing or growing in size.

Maybe itâs just acne. But it also could be skin cancer.

You might be surprised to hear that your skin is the largest organ in your body. It protects against the environment, including sunlight, bacteria, chemicals, and extreme temperature.

Skin problems are among the top 10 reasons active duty service members seek out medical care, military medical data show.

A common reason that service members seek out medical attention is for inflammatory skin conditions, including acne, shaving bumps, or ingrown hairs. Others report unusual lumps and bumps. These are generally the top reasons service members seek dermatology care, said Dr. Neil Gibbs, dermatology residency program director at Naval Medical Center San DiegoNaval Medical Center San Diego website.

Eczema or psoriasis are other skin conditions. They can be treated but not cured, Gibbs added.

The following conditions may disqualify you for military service:

a. Benign tumors that interfere with function, prevent wearing the uniform or protective equipment, would require frequent specialized attention or have a high malignant potential.

Nutrition And Dietary Supplements

People who have eczema often have food allergies, so eating a healthy diet may help reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.

Check with your doctor before giving a supplement to a child.

Avoid exposure to environmental or food allergens. Common foods that cause allergic reactions are dairy, soy, citrus, peanuts, wheat , fish, eggs, corn, and tomatoes. There is much controversy regarding the most effective way to test for food allergies or sensitivities.

Eat fewer refined foods and sugar. These foods contribute to inflammation in the body.

Eat more fresh vegetables, whole grains, and essential fatty acids .

Joining The Military With Food Allergies

The Armed Forces are allowed to bar people with allergies because they are exempt from disability discrimination legislation.

Even if the military wasnât exempt from this legislation, the ability to eat any food is considered an occupational requirement for serving personnel, so this discrimination would likely still be allowed. A history of food allergies is a disqualifying medical condition for individuals seeking to join the military.

People with venom allergies may be eligible if they have been desensitized with immunotherapy and no longer need to carry an EpiPen.

Although having allergies may lead to your disqualification from military service, do not lie about your allergies when applying. It is essential to be completely honest and forthright in your disclosure of these medical conditions to the military, as a failure to disclose a condition will automatically disqualify you.

If you are excluded from the military due to a history of food allergies, you can request a waiver and make an appointment with a military-approved allergist, who will require that you complete and pass an oral food challenge. Prospective recruits with oral allergy syndrome may also qualify for a waiver.

Eczema In The Armed Forces

Imagine wearing heavy body armor in a humid, insect-filled jungle environment or living in the heat, dust and debris of a desert war zone.

If you have eczema, you may already be thinking about the flares those conditions could cause. For these reasons and others, the U.S. Armed Forces has medical standards surrounding military service and eczema.

Specifically, having atopic dermatitis after age 12 is disqualifying. So is having recurrent contact dermatitis or dyshidrotic eczema within two years of military candidacy that needed treatment with more than a topical steroid.

Various military branches also have restrictions within these overall standards. The Army and Navy, for example, list 9 years old as the oldest age allowable for having had AD.

There are two primary reasons for the standard, said dermatologist and U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Emily B. Wong, MD, who is dermatology consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General and is stationed at Joint Base San Antonio- Lackland, Texas.

First, its important to protect the military members health. Many of our deployment conditions, such as environment extremes, wearing of military gear, mental and physical stress, and lack of access to specialized medical care and creams or medications, can cause significant flares and poor disease control, Wong said.

Surprising Medical Conditions That Will Disqualify You From Military Service

A medical waiver may be in the cards.

BySarah Sicard | Updated Jul 19, 2021 3:31 PM

In order to join the military, you need to qualify medically. And while there are some obvious stipulations, like the fact that you cant be carrying diseases that will endanger your platoon, there are other disqualifying conditions that might surprise you.

All the disqualifying diseases, disorders, and conditions adopted by the U.S. military are listed within the International Classification of Disease code, under the United Nations World Health Organization.

Task & Purpose reached out to Lt. Michele Stein, a Navy recruiter, who shared some lesser-known medical conditions, and in some cases, ways you can get around them. In addition, Stein also asked around her station in Tucson, Arizona, for crazy, surprising medical disqualification stories. We compiled our favorites, and here are six unusual conditions that can keep you from joining the military.

Nonmilitary providers play a critical role in the diagnosis and management of atopic dermatitis in children and adolescents who may one day desire to join military service as well as current military members who do not have access to military dermatologists. Failure to diagnose or incorrect diagnosis of AD in a child, adolescent, or current service member may have negative implications on their ability to effectively and safely serve in the US Military.

Evaluating The Ability To Serve

10 tips to HEAL YOUR ECZEMA| Dr Dray

During their military application, potential recruits provide an extensive medical history and undergo a medical examination. During this process, doctors identify and evaluate eczema and other medical issues that could affect the candidates service.

Restrictions and medical screening dont necessarily rule out serving in the military with eczema, however. Waivers are sometimes granted to military candidates, said Wong.

There are medical regulations that guide each medical diagnosis and determine whether a medical condition is compatible with military service, she explained. In some cases, such as with mild eczema, even though the condition is initially disqualifying, a waiver can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The USAF amended its rules in 2018 so that select candidates with mild forms of eczema can get waivers with occupational restrictions. Wong explained how this might work.

If, for example, a candidate was diagnosed with chronic eczema and their primary symptoms were hand dermatitis such as severe dryness, cracking, peeling and bleeding they may be restricted from aircraft or vehicle maintenance, where they have to work with their hands and wear gloves, she said.

Active duty members can also develop eczema on the job. When this happens, a medical evaluation board reviews the case, weighing a number of factors, including the type and severity of eczema and the requirements of the persons job.

Armys Asthma Policy For 2019

Things arent much easier if youre considering joining the Army.

Just like with the Navy, if you currently are being treated for asthma, its grounds for immediate disqualification from Army service.

However, if you havent had any Asthma symptoms past the age of 13, youre good to go.

If you have had Asthma past the age of 13, but do not currently have Asthma, you can still get in with a waiver.

The waiver process is similar to that of that Navy and requires you to take a Pulmonary Function Test.

In addition, your complete medical history regarding your Asthma will be examined, as well as your current condition.

OMK spoke with Sergeant Hewitt, an Army recruiter stationed out of Atlanta, GA, to get a more concrete answer on what would happen if you were diagnosed with Asthma while serving.

Heres what he had to say:

If you develop Asthma while serving in the Army, the soldier will be sent to the doctor for a full checkup.

A PFT will be conducted, and the doctor would make a recommendation to the Army as to your status.

Psoriatic Disease Biologic Treatment Can Disqualify Many From Military Service

Disclosures: We were unable to process your request. Please try again later. If you continue to have this issue please contact .

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis remain medically disqualifying conditions for entrance into the U.S. military, and many treatments for psoriatic disease could inhibit those who are enlisted from continuing to serve.

Therefore, anyone looking to enlist, as well as the dermatologists and rheumatologists who treat them, should take this into consideration when determining treatment options.

The Department of Defenses Medical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction into the Military Services lists history of psoriasis excluding non-recurrent childhood guttate psoriasis under skin and soft tissue conditions that preclude an individual from service.

There are many skin conditions and other medical conditions that can severely affect someones ability to deploy, join the military or stay in the military, and psoriatic disease is one of them,U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Justin P. Bandino, MD, associate professor and program director for the SAUSHEC dermatology residency program in San Antonio and president of the Association of Military Dermatologists, said. Entry standards are required to be quite stringent.

Risks in the field

The reasons behind these standards vary but ultimately come down to cost and safety.

Allergies And Coeliac Disease

Significant food or other allergies are a limiting factor to entry.

Coeliac disease

While coeliac disease is manageable day-to-day within New Zealand, in certain situations there may be limited dietary options for a prolonged period. In such situations there is a risk of complications ranging from gastrointestinal symptoms to nutritional deficiency. This has potential implications not only for the individual, but also those around them. The Defence Force has an obligation to minimise risk to the individual and the organisation wherever possible, and accordingly if you have coeliac disease you may not be admitted entry to the Defence Force.

Massage And Physical Therapy

One clinical study looking at essential oils for treating children with eczema found that massage with and without essential oils helped improve dry, scaly skin lesions. Children with this scaly, itchy skin problem seem to have less redness, scaling, and other symptoms if they had massage between flares. DO NOT use massage when skin is actively inflamed. The essential oils most often chosen by the mothers in the study included sweet marjoram, frankincense, German chamomile, myrrh, thyme, benzoin, spike lavender, and Litsea cubeba.

Exercise

In one clinical study, participating in regular group sporting activities for 3 weeks improved eczema symptoms. Exercise may improve symptoms because of the positive impact it has on emotions. Sports should be avoided during the worst stages of an outbreak.

Climatotherapy

Climatotherapy uses sunlight and water as therapy. The Dead Sea in Israel is known for its healing properties, and many people with eczema go there to sit in the sun and swim in the water. Scientific studies support the benefits. One clinical study looked at the experience of more than 1,500 people with eczema and found that 95% of skin was cleared in people who had stayed at the Dead Sea longer than 4 weeks.

Drug Issues With Add/adhd

The most common of these drugs are Ritalin and Adderall. If there is a documented use of Adderall in a non-prescribed basis as in an emergency room visit with such side effects as high blood pressure, stroke, or other aggressively disruptive behavior, you will likely be unable to obtain a waiver.

Waivers are only reviewed on a doctor prescribed program for minor attention deficit issues. Any depression, bipolar disorder, or other mental health problems associated with some ADD/ADHD diagnosis tips the scale into an area of medically disqualifying issues that are not waiverable.

Spine And Sacroiliac Joints

The following conditions may disqualify you for military service:

a. Arthritis.

b. Complaint of a disease or injury of the spine or sacroiliac joints with or without objective signs that has prevented the individual from successfully following a physically active vocation in civilian life or that is associated with pain referred to the lower extremities, muscular spasm, postural deformities or limitation of motion.

c. Deviation or curvature of spine from normal alignment, structure or function if —

It prevents the individual from following a physically active vocation in civilian life.

It interferes with wearing a uniform or military equipment.

It is symptomatic and associated with positive physical finding and demonstrable by X-ray.

There is lumbar scoliosis greater than 20 degrees, thoracic scoliosis greater than 30 degrees, and kyphosis or lordosis greater than 55 degrees when measured by the Cobb method.

d. Fusion, congenital, involving more than two vertebrae. Any surgical fusion is disqualifying.

e. Healed fractures or dislocations of the vertebrae. A compression fracture, involving less than 25% of a single vertebra is not disqualifying if the injury occurred more than one year before examination and the applicant is asymptomatic. A history of fractures of the transverse or spinous processes is not disqualifying if the applicant is asymptomatic.

f. Juvenile epiphysitis with any degree of residual change indicated by X-ray or kyphosis.

a. Acne, severe or when extensive involvement of the neck, shoulders, chest, or back would be aggravated by or interfere with the wearing of military equipment, and would not be amenable to treatment. Patients under treatment with isotretinoin are medically unacceptable until eight weeks after completion of course of therapy.

b. Atopic dermatitis or eczema, with active or residual lesions in characteristic areas , or documented history thereof after the age of 8.

c. Contact dermatitis, especially involving rubber or other materials used in any type of required protective equipment.

d. Cysts.

Cysts, other than pilonidal, of such a size or location as to interfere with the normal wearing of military equipment.

Pilonidal cysts, if evidenced by the presence of a tumor mass or a discharging sinus. History of pilonidal cystectomy within six months before examination is disqualifying.

e. Dermatitis factitia.

f. Bullous dermatoses, such as Dermatitis Herpetiformis, pemphigus and epidermolysis bullosa.

g. Chronic Lymphedema.

h. Fungus infections, systemic or superficial types, if extensive and not amenable to treatment.

Q: Can Lifestyle Changes Help

Lifestyle changes alone probably won’t be enough to completely address symptoms, especially when it comes to psoriasis, since it is a chronic autoimmune disease.

But because dryness is a trigger for both psoriasis and eczema, you can certainly reduce your risk of having a flare by taking shorter, lukewarm showers and applying a thick, hydrating cream or ointment right after you towel off. That will help lock in moisture, as well as repair the skin barrier, which is important because cracked and irritated skin allows more irritants and allergens to get in.

If you have eczema, it’s really important to use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic soap and moisturizers, as fragrances can cause allergies and further trigger itchiness and inflammation. One over-the-counter creamthat may help provide relief from symptoms: Aveeno® Eczema Therapy Daily Moisturizing Cream, which is free from steroids and fragrances. It also contains colloidal oatmeal and ceramide, which have been clinically proven to help reduce redness and itching associated with eczema.

You should also use scent-free hypoallergenic laundry detergent for the same reason. Certain fabrics, such as those made with wool, may be irritating to delicate skin as well.

If your indoor air is very dry it’s also a good idea to run a humidifier. Just be sure to clean it often to avoid a buildup of mold or bacteria.
