Can I Get Eczema On My Face

What To Do About Itching

Eczema on the face: 11 tips from a dermatologist| Dr Dray

Try to keep your baby from scratching their itchy skin. Scratching can make the rash worse, lead to an infection, and cause the irritated skin to get thicker and more leathery.

Trim their nails often, and then take the edge off of them with a file if you can. Some parents also slip scratch mittens onto their little ones hands. Others try long socks, tucked in under a long-sleeved shirt, so theyre harder for a baby to remove. View a slideshow to get more eczema skin care tips.

Face Masks And Facial Eczema: What You Can Do

Public health agencies are urging people to wear face masks to help curb the spread of COVID-19. What to do if face masks cause or worsen eczema on your face?

Wearing a mask is our new normal and its the right thing to do during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it can be a source of anxiety for people who suffer from facial eczema.

Facial eczema is very common, especially in young children. Symptoms are often uncomfortable, painful and itchy. It can occur anywhere on the face, but its most often found on the chin and cheeks. Some adults also develop eczema around the lips.

Risk Factors For Seborrheic Dermatitis

There are many factors that may increase your risk of developing seborrheic dermatitis.

One of the main ones is having a family history of dandruff.

Additional risk factors for developing seborrheic dermatitis or experiencing flare-ups include:

  • Oily skin means that there is more natural oil that offers a place for yeast to grow.
  • Stress often precedes flare-ups. The reason behind this isn’t fully understood, but it’s possible that your body’s chemical responses to stress make you more prone to an inflammatory reaction to yeast.
  • Cold, dry weather can make the scalp prone to itchiness and flaking.
  • Hormonal changes may worsen seborrheic dermatitis or contribute to flares.
  • Use of alcohol-based skin products or harsh cleansers or soapsmay irritate skin.
  • History of acne, psoriasis, rosacea, or other skin disorders can mean skin inflammation, scaly skin, or excess oil.
  • Certain medications, such as psoralen used to treat skin conditions, interferon, or the mood-stabilizer lithium for bipolar disorder can make you more prone to flare-ups.

Why Are Eczema Rates Continuing To Rise

In this day and age, its not uncommon to see huge leaps in technological advances. You can call your best friend across the world with the press of a button, or see what a Victorias Secret model is having for lunch by getting on Snapchat or Instagram.

But the eczema world, in contrast, hasnt changed much. While there continues to be new treatments for major skin diseases when it comes to eczema, there are still very large needs being unmet.

A recent study found that eczema in adults rises as high as 10 percent, suggesting that eczema is no longer a childhood disease, but something that persists until adult life. Further, 3 percent of US adults have eczema requiring systemic therapy.

So why is it that we STILL see these rates continuing to rise, and why is it spreading to adults?

According to the National Eczema Association, this discrepancy stems, in part, from an incomplete understanding of the disease. For many years, there has been a lack of proper treatments due to an active debate about whether the cause of eczema is in the skin itself or immune-driven .

In other words, until we understand where it comes from, proper treatments cannot be developed, proper advice cannot be given, and eczema rates may still continue to rise!

Steroid Creams And Ointments

Guide to Perioral Dermatitis Part 1

Topical steroids work by reducing inflammation in the skin. Topical steroids are grouped into four categories depending on their strength mild, moderately potent, potent and very potent. There are various brands and types in each category. For example, hydrocortisone cream 1% is a commonly used steroid cream and is classed as a mild topical steroid. The greater the strength , the more effect it has on reducing inflammation but the greater the risk of side-effects with continued use.

Creams are usually best to treat moist or weeping areas of skin. Ointments are usually best to treat areas of skin which are dry or thickened. Lotions may be useful to treat hairy areas such as the scalp.

As a rule, a course of topical steroid is used when one or more patches of eczema flare up. You should use topical steroids until the flare-up has completely gone and then stop them. In many cases, a course of treatment for 7-14 days is enough to clear a flare-up of eczema. In some cases, a longer course is needed. Many people with atopic eczema require a course of topical steroids every now and then to clear a flare-up. The frequency of flare-ups and the number of times a course of topical steroids is needed can vary greatly from person to person.

Eczema Can Sometimes Look Different On The Face And Neck Than It Does Elsewhere On The Body

A person can have eczema on their face that appears very different from the eczema they have on other areas of their body. Some people may have very typical dry, scaly eczema on their arms or their trunk, but then on their face perhaps they have more of an oozing or weeping form of eczema, or vice versa, Wan says.

For other people, face and neck eczema can look very similar to eczema on other parts of their body. It tends to be scaly, pink patches on the face, similar to what you may see on the arm or the trunk, Wan says.

Finally, Wan says, Theres no one specific way that eczema on the face and neck looks, and the appearance can vary significantly from person to person.

What Medications Can Treat Eczema

Medications used to treat eczema include:

  • Topical steroid creams or ointments
  • Oral antihistamines for itching
  • Diphenhydramine , hydroxyzine , and cyproheptadine cause drowsiness and may be helpful for patients whose itching keeps them up at night
  • Tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream
  • Oral steroids may be used for short periods to treat severe flares
  • Injectable biologics such as dupilumab may be prescribed for adults with moderate to severe eczema that has not responded to other treatments
  • Immunosuppressive drugs may be recommended for patients with severe eczema whose symptoms do not improve with other treatments
  • Ultraviolet light therapy may also be used to help control eczema in patients with severe eczema who do not respond to other treatments. However, it is expensive and can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

How To Get Rid Of Facial Eczema

How I Cured My Eczema (Face/Eyelids)?

There are many ways to get rid of facial eczema. Typically, doctors use the following facial eczema treatments:

    Moisturizers or emollients

Moisturizers or emollients are an essential part of the treatment. They can be directly applied to dry and flaky skin in the form of creams and ointments. Moisturizers hydrate, soothe, protect, and repair the skin by preventing moisture loss. They are also important for the management and prevention of flare-ups.

    Bathing practices

Bathing is an essential part of facial eczema treatment. Your doctor will suggest using neutral or low pH, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and irritant-free bath products. You then apply moisturizer immediately after bath to maintain skin hydration.

    Wet-wrap therapy

Wet-wrap therapy involves wearing medicated bandages, cloth, or wet wraps over the facial skin affected by eczema. You can use this therapy with or without emollients or topical corticosteroids. The covering helps decrease the severity of facial eczema and prevents scratching. It also allows the skin to remain hydrated and heal better.

    Medications

Your doctor may prescribe the following topical and oral medications to treat facial eczema:

Doctors prescribe phototherapy alone or in combination with other medicines. You must be careful when using phototherapy, as it can cause reactions with certain drugs.

    Best Treatment For Baby Eczema

There is no one right treatment for eczema in children. What works for another child may not work for yours. You may have to go through several treatments or combinations of treatments in partnership with your doctor before you find one that helps manage your childs symptoms. Be persistent and patient as treating eczema can take several weeks or longer before you see real progress.

    How To Take And Store

Elidel and Protopic are applied twice daily to the skin in a thin layer. The drugs should not be used as a moisturizer, even in severe cases. If symptoms do not improve after six weeks of use, treatment options should be reviewed. Applying Elidel or Protopic more frequently will not improve results.

Elidel and Protopic can be safely stored at room temperature . Short-term exposure to temperatures ranging from 59 degrees F to 86 degrees F will not compromise the drugs’ efficacy, but you should avoid storing the drugs in hot places or in direct sunlight. Never use a drug after its expiration date.

Elidel and Protopic are intended for short-term use or the intermittent treatment of chronic eczema. They are not intended for continuous, long-term use.

What Foods Should I Eat Or Avoid To Reduce My Risk Of Eczema

The connection between eczema and food allergies is unclear. If you have food allergies, then one of the reasons why you must avoid that food is that it may cause or worsen dermatitis. Examples of common allergies include peanuts, dairy, eggs, sugar, alcohol and gluten. Pay attention to what you eat. If your eczema flares up after you eat a certain food, then you might have an allergy to it.

If you dont have a food allergy then there are no foods, including chicken, that will cause or worsen your eczema.

My son is 11 months has eczema since 2 months, I have tried so many different creams it is different for every child. I recently tried Bepanten nappy cream and it works really well I havent had to use steroid creams since. I also use Oilatum in his bath. His pediatrician says he should grow out of it by 2/3

  • Me too! 13 Nov 2020

My one year old has had eczema since he was born It progressed from milk spots to dermatitis to eczema. I went to the doctor and then onto a dermatologist. I have tried many different things and found that the things that work the best for us are:

-Keep baby cool, dont overdress, same as you or less if the hot baby.-Mild cortisone cream on the bad bits.-Barrier cream twice a day we have two baths and put on just after. I use a big jar of soft paraffin just from the chemist it is cheaper than a lot of the creams because we use so much and less sticky than Vaseline.-I avoid soaps as they do tend to dry out the skin.-It also gets worse if he has some foods so keep an eye on that too.

Good luck! Fingers crossed they both grow out of it.

    Exposure To Irritants Or Allergens

Your environment can also irritate your skin. Exposure to certain fabrics, soaps, skin products, air pollutants, and more can be a cause.

Weather plays a role as well. If youre in an environment that is low humidity with dry air, your skin can become itchy and dry. In an environment with high humidity and heat, sweating can make that itching worse.

If youve been exposed to an irritant or allergen, it can cause a flare-up of eczema on your hands. Sometimes it can be challenging to know what is causing your flare-up.

Pay attention to cleaners, solvents, and other chemicals you come in contact with. For example, hand sanitizers are 60-70% alcohol. Its one of the worst things you can put on your skin and it comes with a very high risk of irritation. Furthermore, health care workers use plastic gloves made from latex. Latex is a known skin irritant.

Pay attention to any potential fabrics or allergens youre encountering. This can help you figure out whats causing your eczema flare. Once you do figure out whats causing your eczema to flare, do your best to limit contact.

If you do need to come in contact with it, make sure to wear vinyl or neoprene gloves.

    Carefully Choose Your Makeup

Use caution when applying makeup on existing facial eczema rash, since it may lead to further irritation.

If you decide to use makeup, choose a liquid foundation instead of oil-absorbing powders, which can exacerbate dryness. “The liquid is more moisturizing, so it can help to accelerate the healing process,” explained Dr. Khetarpal.

Dr. Doyle recommended makeup from Clinique or bareMinerals for patients with eczema. One product to try: bareMinerals bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation Broad Spectrum, which contains SPF.

“These tend to be a bit more friendly to eczema patients and those with sensitive skin who are looking for coverage,” said Dr. Doyle.

    What Does Eczema Look Like

In babies with paler skin, when eczema is flaring the skin is red and itchy. In babies with darker skin, the irritated, itchy areas may be red but are more likely to show as darker patches. They may also appear paler around the front or back of knees or elbows.

When an area of darker skin is treated for eczema, it may become lighter and may take several months to return to the babys normal skin tone.
