Best Multipurpose: Vaseline Skin Protectant

My Top 5 Lotions for Eczema with a Secret Ingredient

One of the best topicals for eczema is Vaseline ointment,” says dermatologist Evan Rieder, MD. “Though it can be greasy, nothing protects the skin like it. One tip I give to my patients who are really suffering from itchy, dry skin or eczema is to apply Vaseline to their arms and legs before they go to bed and wrap with socks and gloves or Saran wrap. The occlusive barrier allows the skin to recover through the night and alleviates concerns about getting work clothing messy during the days.

Dermatologists also recommend using a thick layer of moisturizer all over the skin after taking a shower. Doing this helps lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.

Lotions typically evaporate quickly and are not the best moisturizers to use after showering. However, some lotions may still be effective moisturizers.

This Baby Sunscreen Cream from Badger contains only 6-ingredients. Fewer the ingredients, the less likely it is to spring surprises on your childs skin.

The primary ingredient is non-nano zinc oxide, just like theAll-Good Sunscreen. It does a great job at blocking harmful rays.

But it has an organic sunflower oil base along with beeswax andVitamin-E. Further, theres calendula which will soothe any existing patches orflare-ups. While these do a phenomenal job of moisturizing the skin, it alsomakes the texture a little pasty.

So, you will need a fair amount of cream to cover your childs bodyfrom head to toe. Also, its a little difficult to rub into the skin.

What Kinds Of Moisturizers Are Most Effective For My Eczema

Not all moisturizers are created equal. In fact, there are many types of common moisturizers that arent good at helping control your eczema and may even make it flare or get worse. Its important to understand the differences between the three basic types of moisturizers ointments, creams, and lotions so that you can properly hydrate your skin and help keep your symptoms under control.

Moisturizers are classified based on the amount of oil and water they contain. The more oil in a moisturizer, the better it usually is at treating eczema. The best moisturizers to use are the ones that feel greasy , because they contain more oil. These are very effective at keeping moisture in and irritants out.

All moisturizers should also be applied to your hands immediately after washing and gently blotting them dry. For this reason, its a good idea to keep moisturizer near every sink in your home and carry a small tube with you at all times, so that you can reapply it throughout the day.

How Should Eczema Cream Be Used

Different eczema creams are used in different ways. How and when you apply your eczema cream will depend upon whether youre going through a flare-up, how bad your symptoms are, and where on your body the affected areas are.

If youre not going through a flare-up of symptoms, or if your eczema is very mild, you should simply use emollients. Emollients should be used every day at least twice, but ideally more often, especially if you have very dry skin. You should use a large amount and apply it all over your skin, smoothing it in the same direction your hair grows.

If you are experiencing a flare-up, you should use emollients and topical corticosteroids. Apply a layer of emollient first, wait for it to soak into the skin, and then use your corticosteroid cream or lotion. This should be applied only to the affected areas, as directed in the products patient information leaflet. Typically, you will have to apply corticosteroids once or twice a day.

Other things to consider include the following:

You should always speak to a pharmacist or doctor before you start using eczema creams, to make sure youre using the right kind at the right strength.

Why Is It So Important To Moisturize After A Bath Or Shower

Water is an effective way to put moisture back into the skin, but only if you use lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing and apply a moisturizer within three minutes after bathing or showering. This last step very important if you dont moisturize immediately afterward, the moisture your skin needs will evaporate and may cause a rebound effect making the skin even more dry.

Controlling Eczema By Moisturizing

Keeping your skins moisture intact is one of the most important things you can do to help control your eczema.

Moisturizers helps protect the outermost layer of skin known as the stratum corneum or skin barrier. People living with eczema have a damaged skin barrier, which makes their skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, bacteria and other invaders. A damaged skin barrier also make it harder for the skin to retain water, leading to chronic dry, itchy skin, which can cause eczema to flare or get worse.

Wind, low humidity, cold temperatures, harsh soaps and prolonged exposure to water, all lead to dry skin. So, its important to understand how and when to properly moisturize and which products are best to use when you have eczema.

Should I Use Different Products For Different Areas

Absolutely! According to Nussbaum depending where the eczema is located it should be treated differently. For example, eyelids and sensitive skin areas like underarms, inguinal folds and lips will be treated with a lighter strength corticosteroid than thicker skin like the back or legs, she explains.

The scalp can experience a few different conditions which may look like eczema, however could be a form of seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis or fungal infection. Natural Eczema Treatment: 13 Home Remedies For Eczema

By Kathleen McCoy, BS

May 30, 2017

Is your skin red, dry, scaly and extremely itchy? Have you been diagnosed with eczema? The skin condition eczema is believed to affect over 30 million Americans. So, what is eczema? In fact, eczema isnt a single condition it is actually a group of skin conditions that includes atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, hand eczema, neurodermatitis, nummular eczema and stasis dermatitis. Finding a soothing, natural eczema treatment can be life-changing for those suffering from this frustrating condition.

Eczema typically first appears in very young children with research finding that 65 percent of cases occur before infants hit their first birthday, and 90 percent of those affected have their first cases before they turn 5 years old. Of further concern is that eczema in children is becoming more and more common. Diseases eczema can resemble include psoriasis, rosacea and dermatitis, but its a different condition.

A study conducted by the Department of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center found that 39 percent of Caucasian children develop eczema by 3 years old. Interestingly, this same study found children that have a dog in the home are significantly less likely to develop eczema at any age.

Herbacin Kamille: With/avec Glycerine Hand Cream

Herbacin Kamille is commonly offered in a small cute tin or can be found in small squeezable tube. You often will hear from people dealing with generally very dry skin that its a great product! I havent bothered touching this one until my local dermatologist recommended it to me when I asked what is the best hand cream in the city.

Here are some points for this hand cream:

  • Highly contains glycerin which is great for moisturization.
  • The cream appears to be thick due to the glycerin which can be a great barrier from moisture loss or against environmental stress . I recently discovered that glycerin works well at attracting humidity in the air contributing to moisture in the skin. For those who live in a warmer climate, you will have a greater positive effect with glycerin. Winters may be the worst time since the air is cold and dry. However it is still beneficial as a skin barrier.
  • Looking further in the ingredients list, it does contain 3 types of parabens and bit of fragrance. This brings up a hot topic on the debate of parabens and recalling my recent research through medical and beauty reviews, parabens may not be as bad as we think unless you are real sensitive to it. It is used very little to have a negative effect. This is something I would like to investigate deeper with research and talking further with my dermatologist.
  • Overall this product may work for some of you, unfortunately it didnt meet my expectation.

Are There Any Possible Side Effects

On the whole, lotions for eczema are considered to be quite safe and unlikely to place your health in any danger. However, there are certain side effects that might have to be faced.

While they are not dangerous, they can be alarming if the person does not know about them beforehand.

For one thing, you might feel a stinging or burning sensation when you apply it in the beginning. This effect will improve as the treatment is continued.

Another problem that people complain of is with regards to thinning of the skin. This is a reversible problem which resolves once the application of the lotion is abandoned.

Some lotions may change the color of the skin where they are being applied. Furthermore, increased incidence of acne might have to be faced.

Hair growth in the area where the lotion is applied may also be enhanced.
