    • Bathe or shower in lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes

A Blend Of Creams In A Wrap

For more severe forms of eczema, cortisone creams are sometimes applied under a dressing for several hours to promote better skin absorption.A cortisone cream alone, or a mix of cortisone cream and emollient, is applied to the body then covered in a wet material, dampened with hot water. For the material, you can use either bandages or cotton clothing.

This wet material is then covered with a second layer of dry material to keep the water from evaporating or to prevent the sheets or surroundings from getting wet.

Can Wet Wrap Therapy Create Other Problems

    Eczema & Psoriasis

People should only use wet wrapping for a few days at a time, otherwise, the skin can break down. Wet wrap therapy can lead to systemic absorption of steroid medications and increase the risk of steroid side effects.

One 2021 study found that the corticosteroid betamethasone 0.1% valerate cream, applied during wet wrap treatment, may lead to adrenal suppression.

Adrenal suppression can occur with topical corticosteroids due to absorption through the skin. During this study, adrenal suppression was generally temporary, often resolving even with ongoing topical steroid use.

What Kinds Of Moisturizers Are Most Effective For My Eczema

Not all moisturizing creams are created equal. In fact, there are many types of common moisturizers that arent good at helping control your eczema and may even make it flare or get worse. Its important to understand the differences between the three basic types of moisturizers other than lotion ointments, creams, and skin barrier creams so that you can properly hydrate your skin, get the itch relief you need and help keep your symptoms under control.

Moisturizers are classified based on the amount of oil and water they contain. The more oil in a moisturizer, the better it usually is at treating eczema. The best moisturizers to use are the ones that feel greasy , because they contain more oil. These are very effective at keeping moisture in and irritants out.

All moisturizers should also be applied to your hands immediately after washing and gently blotting them dry. For this reason, its a good idea to keep moisturizer near every sink in your home and carry a small tube with you at all times, so that you can reapply it throughout the day.

How Does Wet Wrap Therapy Work

There are many benefits associated to the use of Wet Wrap Therapy:

    • Cooling – as the water evaporates from the bandage, the skin will cool. This helps to reduce inflammation, itching and tenderness, increasing comfort and helping patients to live an active day and have a comfortable nights sleep
    • Moisturising – emollients applied to the skin and covered by the wet garment are absorbed into the skin, providing a longer lasting moisturising effect
    • Protective – the garment provides a physical barrier and an extra layer of protection from the itch-scratch cycle, allowing the skin to heal at a quicker rate
    • Efficient treatment – Topical steroid molecules are more effective absorbed into superficial and deeper layers of skin where inflammation is present. Using this treatment will prevent damage to the skin from itching and scratching, therefore reducing the healing time process. Once the condition is controlled by using Wet Wrap Therapy, the need for topical steroids will be reduced

    How to apply wet wraps

Generally when this treatment is initially started the wet wrap bandages remain in place for 24 hours and are then changed. Gradually as the skin improves and as instructed by your doctor or specialist nurse this may be reduced.

The inner layer of bandages should be checked regularly as they may become hot and uncomfortable if allowed to dry out. To keep the bandages moist, the outer layer can be pulled down and the inner layer can be sprayed with warm water or by using a wet sponge.

Wet Wraps: What They Are And How To Use Them

If you or your child have ever been to a dermatologists office with a severe eczema flare-up, theres a good chance youve heard of wet wraps before. If not, dont worry youve come to the right place!

During particularly intense eczema ares with severe itch or pain, wet wrap therapy can work wonders to rehydrate and calm skin and help topical medications work better.

Wet wraps are dressings often made from articles of clothing that have been soaked in warm water with a dry layer applied on top. Face wraps are done by nurses trained in the procedure using gauze and surgical netting.

Wet wraps are a common skincare technique used in the pediatric eczema program at Denver-based National Jewish Health, a leading research and health care institution for treating atopic dermatitis in the U.S. The hospital uses a variety of inpatient and outpatient programs that teach how to identify triggers and manage symptoms of eczema.

According to Dr. Mark Boguniewicz, a pediatric allergist and immunologist at National Jewish Health, applying and maintaining wet wraps should be done with care and, when necessary, under the supervision of a medical professional skilled in wet wrap treatment.

A Word Of Caution Before You Begin

Wet wrapping is definitely a time commitment! It can also be a challenge getting little ones to cooperate, since it can feel long and boring for them. Make sure to have plenty of entertainment and distraction techniques lined up.

Another word of caution if you are currently using cortisone, pro-topic, or any other medication to treat your dermatitis, you must speak with your physician on how to properly use the medication with wet wrapping.

Steroids and medication can become even more absorbable into the body when using this wet wrapping technique. This can make the side effects of the steroid creams even greater .

Make sure your practitioner is also on board, so they can determine how long you can safely carry on with wet wrapping.

Some physicians believe that eczema wet wraps can dry out the skin if used for more than one week, so you may want to watch out for this.

    Eczema Wet Wrapping For Children

Eczema wet wrapping is a common moderate to severe atopic dermatitis therapy for children of all ages. A wet wrap treatment can be incredibly effective for short-term moderate to severe eczema discomfort and itch relief. Studies have shown that wet wrap therapy for moderate to severe eczema suffers improves the skins ability to retain water after only one session. Soothems are made from TEWLTect ® skin smart TENCEL fabric enhanced with Zinc Oxide to help control bacteria growth. This eczema fabric holds 50% of its weight in water without feeling wet, only slightly damp. The fabric doesn’t stretch out of shape and drips like cotton wraps or other bandages. It is commonly recommended to add a second dry clothing layer over the wet wrap to help keep bedding dry and the patient in a comfortable temperature state.

Should You Wash Eczema Every Day

The NEA recommends taking at least one bath or shower every day. It also advocates the soak and seal method:

  • Bathe in lukewarm water for 510 minutes using a gentle cleanser. Do not scrub affected skin.
  • Pat skin dry with a towel and leave it slightly damp.
  • Apply prescription topical medication to the affected skin.
  • Within 3 minutes, apply moisturizer liberally all over the body.
  • Wait a few minutes before getting dressed or applying wet wraps to allow the skin to absorb the moisturizer.
  • It is important to avoid soap and soap-based products as they can have a drying effect on the skin.
