Walmart Skin Care: body & face| Dr Dray

Okay, so, I have tested just about every cream/lotion/oil on the market . Recently tried Aquaphor and wasn’t happy with it, reddened his skin more.

Okay, so here is a new cream/lotion I found today and I am excited to try it. it’s Curel itch defense skin balancing cream…has the seal of the National Eczema Association on it…this is what it says:

“The national Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance identifies that this product was created for people with eczema or sensitive skin conditions”

“brings long-lasting itch relief to your skin everyday by instantly rebalancing dry, aggravated skin while also controlling flare ups. In fact, 90% of women saw a noticeable improvement in their skin over one week.”

Fragrance free, gentle enough for babies, absorbs quickly, allergist tested, pediatrician tested.

and it says it rebalances ph levels, moisture level, natural ceramide levels and cellular turnover.

So, I am going to try it on my 15 month old. It cost $8.97 at walmart for 20 oz!! I loved that 🙂 Anyway, I will keep you guys posted and let you know how it works…wish me luck 🙂

Lastly A Special Note About Scrubs:

Although scrubs may be a seemingly obvious fix for sloughing off dead skin, avoid using scrubs on skin with active eczema. A scrub by definition would likely be really irritating for skin affected by eczema. However, if the granules are soft , and if the base of the product is heavier and more ointment-like, then water may be trapped in the skin , and the hydration may soothe the eczema.

    When To See A Doctor

In general, it is a good idea to see a doctor about eczema when outbreaks cause a person significant physical or emotional discomfort.

Although doctors often prescribe corticosteroids for eczema, other medications can help people with severe eczema that does not respond to corticosteroids. These drugs include:

    • calcineurin inhibitors

Although there is no cure for eczema, working with a health professional can help people manage their symptoms more effectively and control and reduce the severity of their flares.

It is also important for a person to make sure their skin condition is, in fact, eczema and not something else that may require different treatment.

The following are common questions and answers about lotions for eczema.

    Goals For Healing Eczema

    1. Preserve Your Skins pH

Many skincare products have labels that read pH balanced, yet many consumers dont really know what that means. The logic behind these formulations is that a change in skin pH usually leads to skin distress.

Our skin is the primary barrier against any external infections or environmental stress. This protective ability is dependent in large part on a proper pH level.

The protective layer of your skin is known as the acid mantle and is made up of sebum, which mixes with amino acids and lactic acid in sweat to form the slightly acidicpH of skin.

Many skincare products interfere with the skins pH by disturbing the normal balance of the acid mantle. When used continuously, some skin oils even predispose you to conditions such as eczema.

Its important to note that some products claim to be pH balanced just for marketing purposes. If you are unsure whether a product is pH balanced, you can use a home pH testing kit, which is available in most stores.

    2. Nourish with Nutrients

Since eczema is largely an inflammatory process, creating an anti-inflammatory environment within your body is essential. One simple way to do this is by consuminganti-inflammatory foods.

Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, usually obtained from fish or fish oil, are potent anti-inflammatory agents. On the flip side, you want toavoid inflammatory foods such as gluten, grains, sugar, hydrogenated oils, dairy and more.

    3. Heal Your Gut

    4. Moisturize Appropriately

    From Prescriptions To Over

The benefits of using natural ingredients for eczema.

If you suffer from eczema, I dont have to tell you how severe the inflammation can be, how strong the urge to scratch is or how the redness is downright discouraging at times.

This frustrating list of symptoms sends 1 out of 10 Americans scrambling to the doctor in search of prescription eczema creams to bring relief.

Today I want to pose the question, Is your eczema cream really all its cracked up to be?

I know that might sound a little shocking, but hear me out.

There will always be another breakthrough over-the-counter eczema cream to hit the market. If youre not careful, you can fall prey toshiny object syndrome, chasing after every new thing that promises results.

The thing you have to remember is that there are a few foundational goals when treating eczema that should guide your treatment options and buying decisions.

Truly managing eczema involves tackling the root cause of the condition without limiting yourself tojust the temporary alleviation of symptoms. Every prescription eczema cream you come across or otherwise should be compared to these goals to determine its true value.

Lets take a look at what those goals are, then see if traditional eczema creams measure up.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention

If your skin isnt responding to over-the-counter treatments, there are prescription topicals that your dermatologist can prescribe. Stronger prescription topical steroids are available for short-term use. Protopic 0.03% and 0.1% ointment and Elidel 1% cream are calcineurin inhibitors, meaning topical medications that work to inhibit the immune system to reduce inflammation and irritation. Dr. Lortscher typically uses Protopic ointment and Elidel cream to wean patients off topical steroids.

Recently, the FDA approved new treatment options including Eucrisa and Dupixent .

    • Eucrisa is a topical, non-steroid treatment. Eucrisa works differently than Protopic and Elidel, targeting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase that helps the body deal with inflammation.
    • Dupixent is an injection for individuals who have eczema resistant to topical treatments or who do not have access to topical treatment. Dupixent works by blocking factors that allow white blood cells to communicate inflammation.

The Worst Products For Treating Eczema

Aveeno Moisturizer Review | Why I Use Oats on My Skin (Dermatologist)

Now weve come to the part of this post where we determine if your current prescription or over-the-counter eczema cream measures up.

Thinking about what the ultimate goals are for healing eczema, do these creams do their job?

    Our opinion? No.

They only address the rash without addressing why the rash is happening in the first place. The downfalls of over-the-counter eczema creams arent just limited to their inability to address the real issue, however.

The primary reason they are problematic is due to their ingredients list.

Hydrocortisone, for instance, is the most widely recommended treatment for eczema. It is a steroid that works by reducing topical inflammation and its related symptoms – redness, swelling and itchiness.

To understand the potential effects of topical steroids, its important to realize that skin cells are NOT impermeable. In fact, for those who suffer with eczema, their skin barrier is even more permeable, readily absorbing any chemicals, bacteria and yes, steroids, that it comes in contact with.Continuous use of topical steroids can damage the natural acid mantle of your skin even further, allowing more and more pathogens to leak in.

Regular use of hydrocortisone creams can also make the skin resistant to the steroids, requiring a larger and larger dose to be effective.

Not only that, many people experience a rebound effect when they stop these common eczema creams, resulting in a fast and furious return of symptoms.

What Recommendations Do You Have For Over

In general, one of the best things you can do for eczema is to find a great moisturizer. Lotions can be a bit drying, as they have a higher water content, so board-certified dermatologist and CEO of Curology, Dr. David Lortscher recommends picking a heavier cream with ceramides or petrolatum.

If your skin is particularly dry or if you’re exposed to very cold dry air, you should begin using a thin layer of a heavier moisturizer in the morning to help protect your skin. Moisturizing is the key to improving skin barrier function, resolving symptoms much faster, and reducing relapse with continual treatment.

Should I Use Different Products For Different Areas

Absolutely! According to Nussbaum depending where the eczema is located it should be treated differently. For example, eyelids and sensitive skin areas like underarms, inguinal folds and lips will be treated with a lighter strength corticosteroid than thicker skin like the back or legs, she explains.

The scalp can experience a few different conditions which may look like eczema, however could be a form of seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis or fungal infection. Therefore always see a dermatologist to help diagnose the condition. Depending on the condition, there are different shampoos, gels and creams containing ingredients such as coal tar, salicylic acid, corticosteroid or selenium sulfide can also effectively treat the scalp.
