This step is completely optional, but oatmeal is a great addition to your milk bath as a way to soothe dry and itchy skin. Palm doesn’t generally recommend milk baths to her patients because of the potential allergic reactions and skin irritations that could result if someone is sensitive to milk. Instead, she often recommends colloidal oatmeal baths to patients who are experiencing conditions like atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, and dry skin.

“Colloidal oatmeal is comprised of oat grains that have been ground into a fine powder,” she says. “This finely textured powder is then combined with other ingredients to soothe skin. It most commonly comes as a packet that can be added to warm bath water to create a cloudy, soothing bath treatment.”

Colloidal oatmeal works its magic on our skin in a few waysit’s anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and may even provide a bit of UV protection. Many of these beneficial properties are due in part to phenolic compounds called avenanthramides that are found in oats, Palm explains.

Meanwhile, “the moisturizing and soothing properties of colloidal oatmeal derive from oat sugars such as starch and beta-glucan,” Palm says. “These provided a protective coating to the skin that reduces water loss from the skin.”

Side Effects And Risks Of Bleach Baths

Soaking In An Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal Milk Bath Moisturizing Bath Soak for Rashes & Eczema

People commonly soak for about 10 minutes to relieve eczema itch, but follow the instructions on the package of colloidal oatmeal or ask your doctor for a recommendation. Dont soak for too long since it can dry out your skin and aggravate itch and eczema.

Once youre finished, you might feel a bit sticky. You can rinse off with fresh lukewarm water. When youre done, quickly pat yourself dry with a towel. Dont rub yourself dry as rubbing can cause irritation.

Within three minutes of finishing your soak, apply your favorite emollient skin moisturizer.

You can find colloidal oatmeal at most drugstores and online. You can also make your own.

Bathing Moisturizing And Wet Wraps

People with eczema tend to have very dry skin in general. This is because the disease causes defects in the stratum corneum, or the skin barrier. The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin that serves a dual purpose: it protects irritants, bacteria, viruses and allergens from getting into our bodies and it keeps moisture from getting out. Genes, skin trauma such as from scratching or rubbing and inflammation caused by the immune system can all contribute to this defective or leaky skin barrier in people with eczema.

The most effective way to treat dry skin is to give it the moisture it needs and help it to retain it. Proper bathing and moisturizing are important for this reason especially if you have eczema. The best way to replace and retain moisture in the skin is to moisturize immediately after taking a bath or shower.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Eczema

Aveeno Active Naturals Eczema Therapy

Apple Cider Vinegar is good for detoxing the body inside and out. When it comes to eczema ACV can help clear the skin of bacteria and infection in a more gentle way than a bleach bath. Apple cider vinegar balances the skins acidity levels, moisturizes, and acts as a toner.

Detox baths like baking soda and apple cider vinegar are cleansing, but its best to talk to your doctor before using. They are a little stronger than oatmeal or milk baths on sensitive skin. The reason people use apple cider vinegar is that they are effective as a detox, moisturizer, and toner.

ACV visibly treats the skin and helps with itchiness in the process. To use apple cider vinegar in the bath either wrap it on the skin and then soak it in the bath, or simply add the vinegar directly to the bathwater.

Better: Fight Eczema With Bleach

It may sound extreme, but bleach is commonly recommended for treating eczema. âBleach baths decrease the load of certain bacterial strains that wreak havoc on the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis,â says Lee. The bleach is thought to kill the bacteria on the skin, reducing itching, redness and scaling, according to the Mayo Clinics Lawrence E. Gibson, MD. For best results, pour a half cup of bleach into a full bath one or two times weekly during an eczema flare-up.
