What Types Of Eczema Cream Are There

Organic Eczema Cream, 50ml

If you have eczema, you probably manage your condition using a combination of emollients and topical corticosteroids. Emollients should be used daily, while topical corticosteroids should be used during a flare-up of symptoms.

Emollients are cleansers and moisturisers tailored towards dry skin. They create a protective barrier, trapping water in the skin and reducing inflammation and itching. They should be applied liberally across the body at least twice a day.

Emollients are not the same as cosmetic moisturisers, as they arent fragranced and arent designed to treat any other skin complaints, such as acne or wrinkles.

Emollients come as:

  • Cleansers
  • Bath/shower oils

If your eczema symptoms are mild, you may only need to use lotions and creams. These emollients contain a lot of water, which means they are quickly absorbed and non-greasy.

If your eczema is more severe, and you have very dry, itchy and thick patches of skin, you should use ointments, as these contain a high fat content.

How Should Eczema Cream Be Used

Different eczema creams are used in different ways. How and when you apply your eczema cream will depend upon whether youre going through a flare-up, how bad your symptoms are, and where on your body the affected areas are.

If youre not going through a flare-up of symptoms, or if your eczema is very mild, you should simply use emollients. Emollients should be used every day at least twice, but ideally more often, especially if you have very dry skin. You should use a large amount and apply it all over your skin, smoothing it in the same direction your hair grows.

If you are experiencing a flare-up, you should use emollients and topical corticosteroids. Apply a layer of emollient first, wait for it to soak into the skin, and then use your corticosteroid cream or lotion. This should be applied only to the affected areas, as directed in the products patient information leaflet. Typically, you will have to apply corticosteroids once or twice a day.

Other things to consider include the following:

You should always speak to a pharmacist or doctor before you start using eczema creams, to make sure youre using the right kind at the right strength.

Why Is It So Important To Moisturize After A Bath Or Shower

Water is an effective way to put moisture back into the skin, but only if you use lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing and apply a moisturizer within three minutes after bathing or showering. This last step very important if you dont moisturize immediately afterward, the moisture your skin needs will evaporate and may cause a rebound effect making the skin even more dry.

What Recommendations Do You Have For Over

In general, one of the best things you can do for eczema is to find a great moisturizer. Lotions can be a bit drying, as they have a higher water content, so board-certified dermatologist and CEO of Curology, Dr. David Lortscher recommends picking a heavier cream with ceramides or petrolatum.

If your skin is particularly dry or if you’re exposed to very cold dry air, you should begin using a thin layer of a heavier moisturizer in the morning to help protect your skin. Moisturizing is the key to improving skin barrier function, resolving symptoms much faster, and reducing relapse with continual treatment.

These should be applied several times every day to help the outer layer of your skin function better as a barrier to your environment. The drier your skin, the more frequently you should apply a moisturiser. Many different ones are available, varying in their degree of greasiness, and it is important that you choose one you like to use. The best one to use is the greasiest one you are prepared to apply. Moisturisers containing an antiseptic may be useful if repeated infections are a problem.

Aqueous cream was originally developed as a soap substitute. It is often used as a moisturiser but can irritate the skin and make your AE worse. For this reason it is recommended that aqueous cream is not used as a moisturiser.

CAUTION: This leaflet mentions emollients . When paraffin-containing emollient products get in contact with dressings, clothing, bed linen or hair, there is a danger that a naked flame or cigarette smoking could cause these to catch fire. To reduce the fire risk, patients using paraffin-containing skincare or haircare products are advised to avoid naked flames completely, including smoking cigarettes and being near people who are smoking or using naked flames. It is also advisable to wash clothing and bed linen regularly, preferably daily.

Best Heavy Duty Ointments For Dryness

Best Cream For Child Eczema Uk

These are much heavier and thicker than the earlier products – ideal for packing on last thing at night before you go to sleep. Theyre greasier, but theyre great if you need a huge dose of hydration – rather than the lighter everyday creams above.

Dr Lipp

This is a slightly pricier product on the list, but I adore this stuff. Originally designed for dry cracked nipples , its genuinely a godsend for any issue you have – dry cuticles, lips, hands and, of course, titties. Its fragrance-free and is made from lanolin, plus it comes in small discreet tubes you can carry around easily.

If were getting technical, this is more of an ointment similar to Vaseline and is much thicker than your average moisturiser – so its a heavy moisturising hitter you can use sparingly on dry irritated areas.

Palmers Cocoa Butter

This is one of the only scented products Ive used that has actually helped my eczema. A ton of people I know love Palmers or have had some contact with it before and – like Vaseline and Dr Lipp – its designed to be really deeply hydrating over your regular daily moisturisers.

In fact, a tattoo artist I went to actually recommended I put this on my fresh tattoo every day to help with the healing process. If thats what a lady who slammed a needle into my skin repeatedly is telling me, there must be some truth to it – and there a hundred percent was.

What Is The Best Treatment For Eczema

Eczema can be treated with emollients and topical corticosteroids. These are applied to affected areas of your skin and can help to relieve symptoms and treat flare ups.

The emollients available from ZAVA are Aveeno lotion and Cetraben cream. Emollients are to be used every day, even when you have no symptoms. They can be used as often as required, usually 3 to 4 times daily. They work by providing moisture to your skin, which can prevent flare-ups and irritation.

Topical corticosteroids are a prescription only treatment, as they contain steroids which are applied directly to your skin. We stock hydrocortisone cream and ointment, which contains hydrocortisone, and Eumovate cream and ointment, which contains clobetasone butyrate. Both can reduce swelling, itching, and redness during a flare up. They should be used sparingly, 1 to 2 times a day. As they should only be used for flare ups, they are prescribed for a maximum of 1 week.

Some people may need stronger corticosteroid treatments to control their eczema. Your GP may suggest a stronger treatment.

The best treatment option for your eczema may be different from someone elseâs. If you have eczema, you must speak to your doctor, as they can help you find the best treatment for you.

Will Eczema Clear Up Without Treatment

There is no cure for atopic eczema, but treatment can help to relieve symptoms and improve flare ups. Contact eczema can clear up on its own, if you can avoid your triggers. Using emollient creams every day is the best way to clear up your eczema and reduce the amount of flare ups you get. If you do get a flare up, a topical corticosteroid should be used to prevent infection and stop your flare up. There are also other things you can do to help clear up your eczema, such as changing your diet and avoiding scratching the affected areas.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention

If your skin isnt responding to over-the-counter treatments, there are prescription topicals that your dermatologist can prescribe. Stronger prescription topical steroids are available for short-term use. Protopic 0.03% and 0.1% ointment and Elidel 1% cream are calcineurin inhibitors, meaning topical medications that work to inhibit the immune system to reduce inflammation and irritation. Dr. Lortscher typically uses Protopic ointment and Elidel cream to wean patients off topical steroids.

Recently, the FDA approved new treatment options including Eucrisa and Dupixent .

  • Eucrisa is a topical, non-steroid treatment. Eucrisa works differently than Protopic and Elidel, targeting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase that helps the body deal with inflammation.
  • Dupixent is an injection for individuals who have eczema resistant to topical treatments or who do not have access to topical treatment. Dupixent works by blocking factors that allow white blood cells to communicate inflammation.

Once hand eczema becomes problematic, it may require treatment with a short, sharp burst of topical steroid treatment which requires prescription. When used for appropriate periods of time under expert guidance you should not suffer with any long-term side effects of steroid use. The purpose of the steroid ointment is to reduce inflammation and allow the skin to heal and recover. If treatment is not offered, the eczema will not only cause discomfort, but may restrict your daily activities and the skin becomes vulnerable to infection as it is no longer functioning appropriately as a barrier.

What Actually Is Eczema

Defined by distinct patches of rough, dry skin that is often red and scaly, eczema is a non-contagious skin condition that is sometimes referred to as atopic dermatitis. Often its most distressing symptom is a gnawing itch that accompanies these patches, which can appear all over the body. When eczema is very active, it may also become moist, crusted or weepy, says dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk. The skin can also eventually become thicker and darker in areas that are repeatedly scratched. Atopic eczema is the most common form of the skin condition, though others include contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis.

What Are The Causes Of Eczema

Contact dermatitis happens when the body comes into contact with a certain substance. It can also occur due to conditions called trigger factors. Irritants like soaps and detergents, skin infections, dry skin, wool, low humidity, heat, stress and sweat can all cause flare ups. Certain foods such as dairy and nuts, as well as environmental factors like smoke, pollen and fragrances could also be the cause.
