Paracetamol Doubles Risk Of Asthma And Eczema In Adolescents

Acetaminophen, more commonly known as Tylenol in the USA and paracetamol in Europe has been linked to the development of asthma and eczema among adolescents. A new study reveals that even monthly use of acetaminophen can more than double the risk, while yearly use may increase the risk by 50%.

You can read about this new study in the upcoming issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Richard Beasley, M.D., professor of medicine, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand on behalf of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood , said:

This study has identified that the reported use of acetaminophen in 13- and 14 year old adolescent children was associated with an exposure-dependent increased risk of asthma symptoms.

Part of the ISAAC program included two written questionnaires, as well as a video questionnaire. They were administered to over 300,000 children, aged 13 to 14 years in 114 centers in 50 countries.

The children were asked to quantify their acetaminophen intake as:

  • Medium at least once over the last 12 months
  • High at least once a month

They were also asked about any asthma and/or eczema symptoms.

The study revealed a significant link between acetaminophen use and eczema or asthma risk.

Asthma or eczema risk linked to acetaminophen was found to be:

The study also found that allergic nasal congestion risk was 38% higher for medium users and 2.39 times greater for high users when compared to non-users.

Eczema Treatments: Over The Counter Prescription And Natural Remedies

  • Eczema is an umbrella term for a group of inflammatory skin diseases that cause patches of dry, red, itchy skin
  • Treatment involves a multimodal approach to include over the counter and prescription medications, and home remedies
  • While there is not yet a cure, these treatments can effectively reduce the number and severity of flare-ups

Eczema comprises a group of inflammatory skin diseases that presents as red, raised patches of itchy, burning scaly skin. As there is no cure for eczema, treatments are intended to address symptoms, and reduce and control outbreaks.

Eczema can be a complicated disease to treat as flare-ups can be a result of any number of triggers. While it is understood it is caused by the interplay between the immune system and genetics, environmental factors and stress all play a role.

There is no one established treatment for eczema every person will respond differently to medications so treatment is tailored to what works best for you.

What Are The Side Effects

It is important to remember that most patients do not experience significant side effects that stop them from taking methotrexate. For those who do experience side effects, these are mostly minor and will improve with time.

The most common side effect of methotrexate is nausea, which usually occurs on the day methotrexate is taken. Your doctor can advise you on how to minimise this, but regular folic acid, anti-sickness tablets and changing from methotrexate tablets to injections can help.

Abnormalities in liver function and blood counts can occur, especially during the first few weeks of methotrexate treatment. For this reason, people taking methotrexate should have regular blood tests, which are more frequent at the start of treatment. These side effects are more common at higher doses, but can occur even in low doses at the start of treatment for some people. Less commonly , patients develop mouth ulcers, rashes, diarrhoea and significant abnormalities in blood counts.

Because methotrexate is an immunosuppressant medication and reduces white blood cell count white blood cells help the body fight infection people taking it can also be more susceptible to some infections, including chest infections. For patients with eczema, this also sometimes includes viral infections in the skin, such as herpes simplex . If you develop chickenpox or shingles while taking methotrexate, you should seek immediate medical attention. You should also have an annual flu jab .

What Other Drugs Will Affect Ibuprofen

Ask your doctor before using ibuprofen if you take an antidepressant. Taking certain antidepressants with an NSAID may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using ibuprofen with any other medications, especially:

  • a blood thinner

  • heart or blood pressure medication, including a diuretic or “water pill” or

  • steroid medicine .

This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with ibuprofen, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.

The Spreading Of Rumours Has Led To Confusion

Worries over the use of ibuprofen appear to have surfaced in France, after Jean-Louis Montastruc, a doctor at Toulouse University Hospital warned on Twitter that: In this period of coronavirus, it is necessary to remember the risk of complications of the NSAIDs in case of fever or infection.

A subsequent tweet by Frances health minister, Olivier Veran, saying that anti-inflammatory drugs could be an aggravating factor of the infection was shared more than 43,000 times. But he also said people should consult a doctor before stopping taking them.

Other tweets are also being shared including one saying that ibuprofen may cause severe cases of the disease, even in young and middle-aged adults with no underlying conditions which has been shared more than 94,000 times on Twitter.

A lack of clear consensus on the issue from the medical profession has led to mixed messages and rumours spreading online, and the University of Vienna laboratory claim noted earlier seems to have taken on a life of its own in both English and German.

Twitter and Facebook posts which seem to be cut-and-pasted and adapted by users all claim to have a doctor in the family who has information from the Vienna lab that the vast majority of people who died of Covid-19 had ibuprofen in their system. Some of the posts go on to claim that coronavirus thrives on ibuprofen. There is no evidence that this is the case.

Eczema Treatment Is All ‘wet’

Question: : Do you know about the “wet pajama” treatment for childhood eczema? Wet a pair of cotton pajamas and wring them out. Put them on the child, then layer a pair of dry fleece pajamas over the top. Leave both pairs of pajamas on overnight.

The child’s body heat creates a layer of high humidity that hydrates the skin. As a physician, I treat older patients, but this approach cleared our son’s severe eczema in three days.

Answer: : Thanks for sharing this unusual treatment. We did discover some caveats. The pajamas must be well wrung out and not too wet. Some people put moisturizer on before slipping on the pajamas. Make sure the youngster does not have an infection, and don’t allow him or her to get chilled.

Question: : I am one of those people who cannot tolerate statin drugs to lower cholesterol. I have taken lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin and Lipitor. They make my muscles ache so I cannot exercise.

I am concerned about cholesterol, however. Can you tell me about foods that are heart-healthy?

Answer: : Some people are able to lower cholesterol with diet, emphasizing certain foods. One reader shared his wife’s experience. Her doctor was concerned about her high cholesterol. She read about the benefits of walnuts and began to eat 1/2 cup daily. Within a few months, her cholesterol was much better. The doctor was baffled until she told him about the walnuts.

The 6 Most Common Triggers For Eczema:

Motrin IB Ibuprofen 200mg Coated Caplets, 50 Count Mountainside ...

1. Dry skin When your skin is dry, it can cause eczema symptoms such as brittle, rough or scaly skin. Some people have a genetic condition associated with a skin protein called filaggrin that causes their skin to lose moisture and allow allergens and bacteria to enter the skin more easily. The best way to prevent an eczema flare is to keep your skin well moisturized. Recent research suggests that moisturizing a babys skin from birth may help prevent eczema from developing.

2. Food allergies Food allergens can play a role in the onset of eczema symptoms, particularly for infants and young children. Its believed the breakdown of the skin barrier contributes to an allergic response when a food allergen is consumed. Among children under the age of 2, eczema is most often related to milk or egg allergy but it can occur with any food.

3. Environmental allergies People with eczema may experience symptoms after exposure to certain grass, tree or ragweed pollen and/or indoor or outdoor mold. Pet dander and dust mites may also trigger symptoms. Since these allergens are often difficult to avoid, the most important treatment is aggressive moisturizing, along with antihistamines and topical skin corticosteroids, if necessary. Skin testing will help identify specific allergies so you can avoid the allergens. Some patients do well with allergen immunotherapy .

Strategies To Eliminate Eczema

Ive got a terrible case of eczema. I itch all the time, writes this weeks House Call. Is there anything I can do besides taking topical steroids to suppress my immune system?

Again, great question especially as the winter months approach and skin becomes more susceptible to these issues. The simple answer is yes, you can.

Over the past few weeks Ive written about overall skin health and acne. This week, I want to focus on eczema, which encompasses a variety of inflammatory skin disorders.

Simply put, eczema becomes a sign that your body is inflamed. The solution, then, becomes figuring whats wrong inside your body and reducing that inflammation, NOT slathering potentially dangerous stuff onto your skin.

The root cause of eczema is a disturbance in your immune system. Your body is overreacting to something attacking you or inside you.

Let me be more specific. If I had to narrow down eczema to two primary causes, I would say:

  • Abnormal gut flora. Getting rid of the overgrowth of bad bugs and yeast can make a huge difference to eliminate eczema. This is called dysbiosis. It is when the 3 pounds of bugs in your gut become out of balance driving inflammation. Yeast overgrowth is a common cause of eczema. It can be caused by a high-sugar, refined carb, low-fiber, processed diet. Yeast overgrowth also can be triggered by the use of antibiotics, steroids, hormones and even the birth control pill.

    What Causes Varicose Eczema

Trust Index: Is it safe to take ibuprofen for COVID-19 symptoms?

In all age groups the blood flow in the veins is slower, with less pressure, than in the arteries. To help the blood flow in one direction and prevent back flow there are valves along the veins at regular intervals. The muscle walls of the veins are thinner than those of the arteries and the veins rely on other muscles to help massage the blood flow. Since the veins in the lower legs are furthest from the heart, this area of the body is particularly vulnerable to poor circulation.

Many of us will have noticed our feet swelling if we sit still on a long flight. This is due to our immobility on the plane and the pressure in the veins increasing as the blood flows more slowly back up our legs to our heart. The increased blood pressure in the veins forces fluid out of them into the surrounding tissues, which leads to swollen, puffy feet. As we disembark and start to walk around, or elevate the feet overnight in bed, the swelling disappears.

Varicose eczema manifests as itchy, dry, flaky areas of skin. The skin may also change colour and become weepy and crusty. When the eczema settles, the skin may crack if it becomes over-dry, or break down if scratched or picked. The skin on the lower leg generally becomes fragile a knock to that area, with a shopping trolley, for example, can also break the skin and cause further irritation, with the risk of a leg ulcer developing.

Possible Risks Associated With Otc Medications

One MyEczemaTeam member shared their success with OTC medications, âFor many people, over-the-counter remedies are more beneficial than prescription meds. Iâm not discouraging prescription options for those that need them, but some of them pose side effects.â But OTC products are not without their risks, too.

It is always important to follow the labelâs instructions when taking any type of OTC medication. Using them off-label, underdosing, or overdosing can be both dangerous and lead to harmful side effects in some people.

Certain OTC medications can interact with other medications you may be taking. Always consult your doctor before applying topical hydrocortisone or taking antihistamines, pain relievers, or other medicated treatments.

Another MyEczemaTeam member shared their caution about using OTC medications: âI have to watch what medications I take because so many over-the-counter medications work against the medications I take now for epilepsy.â

Potential drug interactions aside, possible side effects of OTC topical steroids include:
