It can also occur along with those types of eczema, though it often appears as an isolated condition. Dermatologists can usually spot the condition but may take a skin scraping to confirm a diagnosis.

Understanding Common Toddler Skin Conditions

In the first blog post of this series, we focused on skin conditions that typically affect infants. This installment will help you to understand common skin conditions that occur in toddlers and how to diagnosis them.

ImpetigoImpetigo is one of the most common skin infections among kids. It typically causes blisters or sores on the face, neck and hands. Children who have had other skin conditions including eczema, poison ivy, insect bites, and cuts or scrapes may be more likely to develop impetigo.

There are two types of impetigo: crusted and large blisters. The crusted impetigo is the most common. It usually starts as tiny blisters that eventually burst and leave wet patches of red skin. As time passes, a tan crust will cover the affected area. The large blisters appear clear, then cloudy. They are more likely to stay around longer on the skin without bursting.

If the impetigo only affects a small area of the skin, it is usually treated with antibiotic ointment. But if that does not work, your doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic that will help it to clear up quicker.

RingwormDespite its name, ringworm has nothing to do with worms. It is actually a contagious fungal infection of the skin. The rash develops as one or several red rings, ranging in size from a dime to a quarter. They are usually crusty or scaly on the outside and smooth in the center and may get larger over time.

Check Your Child For Other Symptoms

Is this nummular eczema or ringworm? Located on side of ...

Children whove developed an infection often experience other non-skin related symptoms that you can look for. The biggest telltale sign of an infection is fever. If your child has a rapidly spreading rash and a high fever, its important to seek immediate medical care. Flu-like symptoms such as achiness, fatigue, general malaise and chills also are signs of an infection.

If your child has swollen lymph nodes or is complaining of a sore throat, its also time to contact your pediatrician. In general, even if your child isnt running a fever, a deviation from the normal symptoms of eczema may signal that something else is going on.

Oral Or Injectable Medications

For moderate to severe cases of psoriasis where other treatments dont work, your doctor may prescribe an oral or injected medication. These medications reduce inflammation and slow or stop skin cell growth by altering your immune system.

Options include oral medications like methotrexate, cyclosporine, acitretin, and Otezla or injectable biologics like Humira, among others.

Some non-biologics that your doctor may prescribe are:

  • methotrexate
  • etanercept
  • infliximab

As with any treatment, there are possible side effects you should be aware of. Its important to talk to a doctor to determine the best course of treatment for you. Theyll also keep an eye on your overall health for any signs of potentially dangerous side effects.

Does Your Child Need To See A Doctor About Ringworm

Maybe. You should take your child to the GP if your child has:

  • several ringworm sores on their scalp or body
  • painful sores
  • sores or a rash that arent improving after a weeks treatment with antifungal cream
  • sores or a rash thats spreading despite treatment
  • bald patches on their scalp

Use Of Over The Counter Anti

When there is only a single ringworm patch in the body, this can be treated using an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream. The most frequently prescribed ones include clotrimazole, miconazole, and tolnaftate.

A small amount of the cream is applied two to three times a day for one to two weeks. You should apply the cream over and a little beyond the area of infection. After two weeks of application, there should be noticeable clearing on the infected area. It is important to wash your hands before and after applying the cream.

How Is Pityriasis Rosea Treated

Baby Eczema or Ringworm? I have questions!

Most cases of pityriasis rosea go away in 1 to 2 months without any treatment. Some cases can be as short as 2 weeks, while others can last for 3 months or longer.

When pityriasis rosea does need treatment, it’s usually just to control the itching. Over-the-counter itch creams or allergy syrups can help, and so can oatmeal baths.

In some cases, just getting a moderate amount of sunlight can help improve the rash and the itching. If your child uses this form of therapy, make sure he or she is protected from sunburn, which can sometimes make a rash worse.

Light therapy might be prescribed for cases where the itching is really bothersome. Usually, this involves ultraviolet B therapy and is done by a dermatologist.

Why Is Nummular Eczema Difficult To Diagnose And How Is It Different Than Atopic Dermatitis

Nummular Eczema Symptoms, also known as Discoid Eczema and Nummular Dermatitis, is one of seven different types of the broader category called eczema. The other six types are Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Hand Eczema, Dyshidrotic Eczema, NeuroDermatitis, and Stasis Dermatitis.

Nummular Eczema is a chronic condition that affects people of all ages including infants and young children. Nummular Eczema baby issues can be especially difficult and complex to treat and should be treated by a pediatric dermatologist that specializes in Nummular Eczema baby treatments. An outbreak, or flare-up, of Nummular Eczema has a very different physical appearance than other types of eczema with its round, coin-like lesions surrounded by red, inflamed skin on the hands, arms, legs and/or chest.

Atopic Dermatitis Symptoms start early in childhood and is characterized as extremely dry, scaly, rough skin with a rash of lightened and darkened skin spots. AD is categorized into three levels: mild, moderate and severe. Atopic Dermatitis rashes frequently appear in the creases of the elbows and/or the knees, rashes on the neck, face and around the eyes. Moderate to severe cases of Atopic Dermatitis can cover the entire body. Some children as young as newborn infants have AD rashes on their scalp and cheeks. Adults with AD often have discolored, leathery skin as a result of years of Atopic Dermatitis flare-ups that are easily irritated by what can be a long list of triggers.

In many cases, the diagnosis may not be obvious, even for the experienced clinician. Family history may be helpful in revealing relatives with the disease. The location is suggestive when plaques are confined to the extensor surfaces of limbs, umbilical region, and sacrum.33 Physically removing scale can produce pinpoint bleeding, referred to as the Auspitz sign, characteristic of psoriasis.32 Extracutaneous manifestations including nail changes and asymmetric, oligoarthritis of the hands and feet commonly are seen in conjunction with cutaneous findings.34

The chronic nature of the disease often leads to complex treatment regimens requiring combination therapy to achieve control. Therefore, referral to a dermatologist is appropriate. For small, localized lesions, potent topical corticosteroids and vitamin D derivatives in creams, lotions, or ointments can be used.32 When plaques persist, intralesional injections of triamcinolone can be tried.32 Another commonly used, cost-effective modality is phototherapy.32 When the disease is severe or widespread, biologic and oral immunosuppressive agents are options.

Nummular Eczema Vs Ringworm: Key Points

Now that we have discussed both nummulareczema and ringworm in detail, lets go ahead and review a summary version ofwhat we have learned.

  • Both nummular eczema and ringworm are characterized by the presence of similar-looking roundish patches which tend to be darker around the edges and lighter in the middle.
  • It is possible to get ringworm or nummular eczema on the skin throughout your body. Nummular eczema is most common on the arms, legs, hands, and torso. Ringworm commonly affects the scalp, feet, and groin, but it may also show up in the same spots where nummular eczema occurs.
  • Itching, burning and stinging sensations are possible with both conditions.
  • Despite their similar presentation, the causes of these conditions differ. Ringworm is caused by a fungus. The exact cause of nummular eczema is unknown.
  • There are different triggers for each condition as well. Ringworm is most likely to be triggered by humidity, sweating, and exposure to shared public spaces. Nummular eczema is commonly triggered by dryness, irritations, and allergies.
  • The appropriate treatment for your condition depends on which one you have. If you have ringworm and use eczema treatments, you are unlikely to be successful, and vice versa.

Itchy Sores Or Blisters

Baby Ringworm or Eczema? Know The Difference!

Red sores or blisters that burst and leave crusty, golden-brown patches could be impetigo. The redness may be harder to see on brown and black skin.

The sores or blisters can be itchy, get bigger or spread to other parts of the body. They often appear on the face, hands or around the middle of the body.

Speak to a GP if you think your child may have impetigo.

Small Spots And Blisters

Chickenpox starts with small, itchy spots. The spots may look red, pink, the same colour or darker than surrounding skin, depending on your child’s skin tone. At the start, the spots may be harder to see on brown and black skin.

The spots quickly form blisters and then scabs.

Some children have a few spots, while others have them all over their body.

What Is The Prognosis For Ringworm

Ringworm can be cured with appropriate treatment. Ringworm of the skin typically resolves after two to three weeks of treatment, while cases of ringworm of the scalp or nails may require treatment for a few months. Complications are rare and can include a secondary bacterial skin infection or a widespread fungal infection .

What Does The Term Ringworm Mean

The term ringworm or ringworms refers to fungal infections that are on the surface of the skin. The name is derived from the early belief that the infection was due to a worm, which it is not. Ringworm is a fungal infection in the skin. Nevertheless, the name ringworm remains. Some of these fungi produce a rash of round scaly spots on the skin, but many do not. On the other hand, many round, red spots or rashes on the skin are not due to a fungal infection. A physical examination of the affected skin, evaluation of skin scrapings under the microscope, and culture tests can help health care professionals make the appropriate diagnosis and distinctions from other conditions. A proper diagnosis is best for successful treatment.

The medical term for ringworm is tinea. Health care professionals add another word to indicate the part of the body where the fungus is located. Tinea capitis, for instance, refers to scalp ringworm, tinea corporis to fungus of the body, tinea pedis to fungus of the feet, and so on.

What Do The Ecz

Is it Eczema or Ringworm?

Once we identify nummular eczema and treat it appropriately, most people are significantly better within seven to 10 days, and, for patients who dont have another type of eczema, it often never comes back, according to Dr. Peter Lio, founding director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center. Even in those for whom this is a manifestation of their underlying atopic dermatitis, the nummular aspect seems to disappear quickly and then we can go back to overall management.

Figure 4 Edematous Plaque With Red Flare Characteristic Of Urticaria

Urticaria can be classified as allergic, physical, or idiopathic. Allergic urticaria can be IgE-mediated, occurring in response to foods , inhalants , medications , or complement-mediated in the case of serum sickness. Physical urticarias include dermatographic urticaria, occurring where skin has been stroked cholinergic urticaria, occurring in response to fever and hot baths cold urticaria, occurring on distal extremities upon rewarming pressure urticaria, often occurring on the feet and buttocks hours after pressure has been applied solar urticaria, occurring after exposure to light and exercise-induced urticaria, which presents with large lesions five to 30 minutes into exercise.14

Urticaria is a clinical diagnosis based on history and physical exam. Laboratory tests rarely are indicated and generally are not recommended. Difficulty arises when patients present asymptomatically after an eruption, limiting the exam. As mentioned earlier, individual lesions should not last longer than 24 hours, although an attack may last much longer.21 If lesions persist beyond 24 hours, other causes must be considered and a biopsy may be warranted.22 If food is a suspected trigger, a food diary may be helpful. If a physical cause is suspected, provocative testing can uncover the offending stimuli.14

Cutaneous LP often is self-limiting most cases resolve spontaneously within one year.24 For cutaneous disease, topical corticosteroids under occlusion can be used.24,25 When lesions are symptomatic or when oral lesions are present, intralesional triamcinolone is helpful.25 Widespread disease can be treated with systemic corticosteroids, although relapse may occur when the dose is tapered.25

Cutaneous Larva Migrans

Cutaneous larva migrans is a serpiginous eruption caused by animal hookworm larvae as they migrate through the epidermis.26 In the United States, this disease is most common in warm, southeastern states.27 Percutaneous infection often occurs in those who walk barefoot and children who play in sandboxes. Most cases occur on the feet, hands, and buttocks where larvae can penetrate the skin easily.28 Shortly after infection, patients experience intense pruritus localized to the area of inoculation. Within days, erythematous papules followed by characteristic thin, red, torturous tracts begin to appear.26 Many isolated tracts may be present, each representing the course of an individual larva. Eventually, tracts can coalesce to form annular or ring-shaped lesions. Tracts migrate up to several centimeters a day and may disappear then reappear throughout their course.27 Systemic manifestations are not seen, as larvae are unable to invade deeper tissues.27

Is It Ringworm Or Eczema

eczema: eczema vs ringworm pictures

While there are some similarities between the two conditions, there are many differences, too.

Ringworm Despite the name, ringworm isnt caused by a worm. Its a type of fungus, the same type that causes athletes foot and jock itch, in fact. The name comes from the appearance of the condition, a red ring around a white center of scaly skin. Ringworm usually isnt painful but it can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable.

Eczema While doctors arent sure exactly what causes eczema, they do know its not caused by any kind of fungus. Its thought to be a combination of dry, irritable skin and some sort of disorder or malfunction of the immune system. Eczema causes scaly patches of skin, but unlike ringworm, these arent round or ring-like in appearance. Patches of eczema are red or brownish in color and may ooze or bleed, especially if you scratch the area a lot. Eczema is not just itchy, it can be pretty painful, as well.

Ringworm has a pretty distinctive appearance. Youre not likely to mistake it for something else.

When trying to determine if youve got ringworm or eczema, one other factor to consider is the fact that ringworm is contagious. Eczema is not. If other members of your household are suffering from the same skin problem, its probably not eczema.
