How Do I Apply Topical Steroids
Topical steroids are usually applied once a day but this may be increased to twice a day if there is no improvement. Rub a small amount thinly and evenly just on to areas of skin which are inflamed.
To work out how much you should use each dose: squeeze out some cream or ointment from the tube on to the end of an adult finger – from the tip of the finger to the first crease. This is called a fingertip unit. One fingertip unit is enough to treat an area of skin twice the size of the flat of an adult’s hand with the fingers together. Gently rub the cream or ointment into the skin until it has disappeared. Then wash your hands .

After pat drying the area, I applied a lotion moisturizer around the weeping areas where my skin was badly cracked. I also put a layer directly on the areas itself, to thoroughly hydrate the area.
Finally, I got my 10 minutes of sunlight and then followed up again with more moisturizer as my skin was very cracked at the time.
Doing the steps above, helped the weeping stop within DAYS. Which is why I wanted to share this with you! As someone who struggled with this for years, it makes me want to help others who might have it too.

People with eczema have sensitive skin. Irritants such as heat or detergents can easily trigger a bout of eczema.Suggestions for reducing skin irritation include:
- Avoid overheating your skin. Wear several layers of clothing that you can remove, as required, instead of one heavy layer. Dont put too many blankets on your bed and avoid doonas.
- Dont use perfumed bubble bath or bath products labelled medicated.
- Wear soft, smooth materials next to your skin, preferably 100% cotton. Avoid scratchy materials, such as pure wool, polyester or acrylic. You could try a cotton and synthetic mix material this is fine for some people with eczema. Remove labels from clothing.
- Always wear protective gloves when using any type of chemical or detergent. You may want to wear cotton gloves inside rubber or PVC gloves.
- Avoid chlorinated pools. If you have to swim in a chlorinated pool, moisturise your skin well when you get out.

How Can Atopic Eczema Be Treated
Topical means applied to the skin surface. Most eczema treatments are topical, although for more severe eczema some people need to take oral medication as well.
Complete emollient therapy is the mainstay of treatment for all patients with eczema as the most important part of their treatment this means regular application of a moisturiser and washing with a moisturiser instead of soap .
Filaggrin Gene Mutation In Atopic Dermatitis
In people with atopic dermatitis, there sometimes a decrease or lack of filaggrin in the skin. Filaggrin is a protein that plays a key role in the structure and formation of the outermost corneal layer of the skin. The lack of filaggrin has been traced back to genetic mutations in the FLG gene. Not having enough filaggrin in the skin layers creates a damaged skin barrier, leading to a reduced ability to maintain the skins natural amount of water, as well as sores and rashes. The damaged skin barrier may also allow for airborne allergens to enter the skin, which could lead to an inflammatory response by the immune system.

Skin affected by eczema, an inflammatory skin condition, can sometimes become infected. Infected eczema often arises because of damage to the skin barrier, which can be worsened by scratching. Scratching can lead to open sores and cuts, which can further diminish the skin barriers effectiveness. This can allow bacteria, viruses, and fungi to enter and cause infection. Notable culprits include staph and herpes, but other microbes are also capable of causing eczema-related skin infections.
People with all types of eczema, including atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis, can develop infections. People with atopic dermatitis are particularly susceptible to bacterial and viral skin infections, as they may have large quantities of staph microbes living on their skin.
Risk factors for infected eczema include very dry skin and repeatedly scratching itchy areas. Rarely, eczema-related skin infections can cause more serious conditions, like eczema herpeticum, cellulitis, and even sepsis, which may require more intensive therapy and hospitalization.
Signs And Symptoms Of Eczema
People with eczema have very dry, itchy skin and rashes on various parts of the body particularly the face, hands, feet, insides of the elbows, and behind the knees.
In addition, skin lesions and blotches may develop on the wrists, ankles, sides of the neck, or around the mouth.
For most people, the main symptom of eczema is itching, which can lead to scratching and rubbing that further irritates the skin. This can, in turn, lead to the itch-scratch cycle or increased itching and scratching that worsens eczema symptoms.

When Should I See The Doctor
If the eczema is getting worse, is not responding to treatment or looks infected you should return to see your doctor. If flu-like symptoms develop with a raised temperature and the eczema worsens, then seek medical advice.
Wet wrapping should not be used on infected eczema as the moist conditions provide an ideal breeding ground for further bacterial growth. If you are using the wet wrapping technique and suspect that the skin is becoming infected, seek the advice of your doctor.

What Are The Causes And Risk Factors For Ringworm And Eczema
About 40 different fungal species can cause ringworm. Signs and symptoms appear about 4-14 days after exposure to the fungus. Ringworm is contagious. Risk factors include direct contact with an individual infected with the fungus or indirect contact by sharing clothing or towels with someone infected. Other risk factors include contact sports like
- wrestling,
- walking barefoot in a locker room,
- close contact with animals, and
- wearing tight clothing.

Food Allergy May Be A Trigger In Some Cases
About 1 in 2 children with atopic eczema have a food allergy which can make symptoms worse. In general, it is young children with severe eczema who may have a food sensitivity as a trigger factor. The most common foods which trigger symptoms in some people include cow’s milk, eggs, soya, wheat, fish and nuts.
If you suspect a food is making your child’s symptoms worse then see a doctor. You may be asked to keep a diary over 4-6 weeks. The diary aims to record any symptoms and all foods and drink taken. While primary and secondary weeping eczema are well-known in the medical world, some people can still experience weeping eczema when they first stop using steroid creams. Why is this?
One doctor found that the steroids in the cream itself, indirectly kills Staph A, making it near to impossible for Staph A to colonize the area where you put your steroid cream.
