Under One year of age

Most babies under one year of age need to take 600ml of milk each day to meet their nutritional requirements, including a recommended calcium intake of 525mg daily. If breastfeeding, assume that one good breast feed is equivalent to a bottle of formula. If your baby consumes less than this, your baby may not be meeting their nutritional requirements and you should inform your GP or Health Visitor.

One to three years of age

Calcium requirements are lower in this age group and generally 300ml of milk substitute is enough. However, your child may need more than this if they are not getting enough vitamins and minerals from the foods that they eat.

Four years upwards

Calcium requirements gradually increase back to around 500 mg daily, which requires an intake of the equivalent of 600ml fortified milk substitute a day. It is recommended that adults consume the equivalent of one pint of calcium fortified milk a day.

Include dairy products

Most children and adults with lactose intolerance can tolerate some low lactose foods , lactose in medications and even small amounts of cows milk without causing symptoms . Up to 240ml cows milk is often well tolerated if spread throughout the day. Due to the benefits of lactose, try to include some if possible. If your doctor has determined that your child indeed is lactose intolerant, then you and your baby will be put on a lactose-free diet. Note: cows milk is also used in the production of cookies or margarine, for example. Always consult your doctor or a dietician for help!

Your baby will receive special formula in which the proteins are cut into smaller pieces so that their immune system does not recognize them as such. Doctors do not recommend soy milk as an alternative for children under 1 year old. The protein component of dairy foods can affect the gut, both by causing an allergic reaction in some people, but also by causing non-allergic gut inflammation, which appears to be stronger with the type of protein found in most cows milk.7

Further, dairy proteins exist in a form that appears to make them more likely to trigger an allergic reaction than many other food proteins.3 In addition, cows milk may adversely affect the gut bacteria.7 Around 75% of the world population loses the ability to digest lactose in adulthood. Continuing to consume milk will cause gut inflammation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating.8

About Constipation: Causes And Signs

Constipation often occurs when stool moves too slowly in the digestive tract, causing it to become hard or dry and difficult to eliminate. Constipation can be caused by dehydration, certain medications, physical inactivity and many diseases or conditions, Mayo Clinic reports.

Signs of constipation include having fewer than three stools a week and feeling as if you cant fully or comfortably pass stool. Its important to talk to your doctor if you experience constipation on a regular basis or if it gets worse.

Because it is not a known symptom of lactose intolerance, having constipation might indicate that you have another health issue. Medical conditions that can cause constipation include blockages and other problems in the colon or rectum as well as diseases that affect nerves in those areas.

Testing For Dairy Allergy

Skin prick test: A small drop of liquid containing the dairy allergen is placed under your skin on your forearm or back. If a raised bump surrounded by itchy red skin appears, a dairy allergy is likely.

Your doctor might have you take a blood test too, which measures the amount of certain antibodies in your blood.

Both tests can have âfalse positives.â You can test positive for an allergy even though you really donât have it. Your allergist will explain the results.

These vitamins and minerals are important for the development of strong, healthy bones.

If you’re lactose intolerant, getting the right amount of important vitamins and minerals can prove difficult.

This may lead to unhealthy weight loss and put you at increased risk of developing the following conditions:

  • osteopenia where you have a very low bone-mineral density left untreated, it can develop into osteoporosis
  • osteoporosis where your bones become thin and weak, and your risk of breaking a bone is increased
  • malnutrition when the food you eat does not give you the nutrients essential for a healthy functioning body this means wounds can take longer to heal and you may start to feel tired or depressed

  • Patient referred for lactose tolerance test.

  • Buccal sample for polymorphism analysis. A patient presenting with unexplained gut and/or systemic symptoms should first be tested for the two polymorphisms C/T-13910 and G/A 22018.

  • If CC/GG or CC/GA immediate removal of all lactose from diet. If symptoms improve after one month diagnosis of lactose intolerance confirmed.

  • If CT/GA or TT/AA carry out lactose tolerance test.

  • New recommended lactose tolerance test:

  • 50 g oral lactose.

  • Record breath hydrogen every 30 minutes for three hours, then hourly up to six hours.

  • Record all symptoms for 48 hours.

  • If the breath test is positive, advice to change to a lactose free diet is given.

  • Every patient should be followed up in 12 weeks for a definitive diagnosis. If the referred symptoms have significantly improved the diagnosis of lactose intolerance is made.

  • If the breath test is negative, but there is a significant increase in symptoms after the lactose load, the patient should undergo a supervised trial to determine their lactose threshold.

  • Family studies should be carried out to determine other affected people.

  • Hypolactasia caused by infections such as Giardia or rotavirus should be investigated if there is no evidence of family history.

  • Give advice on lactose free meals, and the danger of hidden lactose.

  • Follow up in one year.

  • Calcium and vitamin D status should be monitored, and advise on the use of probiotics.
