The Skinny On Skin Conditions
Atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema, is a skin condition that begins shortly after birth. While it usually goes away as a child gets older, it can sometimes continue into adulthood.
This week on Take Care, Dr. Whitney High, associate professor of dermatology and pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, discusses several skin conditions, their causes and ways to treat them. High is the director of the schools dermatology lab and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Atopic dermatitis usually first appears on the cheek of the face in the form of a red, scaly, weepy eruption. From there, it settles over time in an area such as the elbow, internal elbow or the back of the knee. The areas have a persistent weepy, oozy, red and very angry rash thats itchy and bothersome.
According to High, no one is quite sure what drives the condition but some have theorized about such causes as poor barrier function.
The barrier function is just the ability of the skin to keep water in and to keep annoying substances out, High said. So, some people think the barrier function breaks down in atopic dermatitis or childhood eczema and people become very, very sensitive to things that wouldnt normally bother a person.
Questions doctors frequently will ask patients they suspect of having atopic dermatitis include: Can you sit on the grass with shorts? Do you cut the tags out of your shirts? Would you wear a wool sweater?

My son is 11 months has eczema since 2 months, I have tried so many different creams it is different for every child. I recently tried Bepanten nappy cream and it works really well I havent had to use steroid creams since. I also use Oilatum in his bath. His pediatrician says he should grow out of it by 2/3
My one year old has had eczema since he was born It progressed from milk spots to dermatitis to eczema. I went to the doctor and then onto a dermatologist. I have tried many different things and found that the things that work the best for us are:
-Keep baby cool, dont overdress, same as you or less if the hot baby.-Mild cortisone cream on the bad bits.-Barrier cream twice a day we have two baths and put on just after. I use a big jar of soft paraffin just from the chemist it is cheaper than a lot of the creams because we use so much and less sticky than Vaseline.-I avoid soaps as they do tend to dry out the skin.-It also gets worse if he has some foods so keep an eye on that too.
Good luck! Fingers crossed they both grow out of it.
Ive heard petroleum jelly can be used, but check with your Dr. first. Also, dont wear tight-fitting clothing on the affected area.

What ‘the Night Of’ Gets So Right About Eczema
Eczema, a constellation of conditions that makes a persons skin dry, itchy, red and scaly, affects an estimated 30 million Americans. It can shame and isolate people who have it.
And right now, the disease is having a moment in the sun thanks to its major role in HBOs The Night Of, a crime drama mini-series that features a character who is heavily defined by having eczema.
Played by John Turturro, lawyer John Stone is a disrespected bottom feeder attorney who usually hangs around NYPD precincts waiting for easy cases. He catches the trial of a lifetime when he wins the trust of Nasir Khan, a Pakistani-American college student accused of the grisly rape and murder of a white woman from the Upper West Side.
While Stone investigates, questions witnesses and visits Khan in prison, hes also constantly having to soothe his inflamed skin. Its mostly on his feet, but its creeping up his legs and has spread to his neck and back. Peter Moffat, the writer who created the U.K. series on which The Night Of is based, has eczema himself and wrote it into the original show, but U.S. writers Richard Price and Steven Zaillian said they expanded eczemas role in their version after doing more research on it. In a panel, Price called the disease a metaphor for the frustrations of finding a solution and the entire judicial system.
Which Is Better For Baking Butter Or Shortening
There is no doubt about it, cookies and cakes taste better when they are made with butter. Shortening, which is made from hydrogenated vegetable oil, has no flavor. Shortening can make baked goods rise higher and be lighter, which depending on what you are baking, may be preferable to using butter.

Seven Easy Tips For Dealing With Your Eczema This Winter
Eczema is known as the itch that rashes due to the way it tends to progress. It often first starts as dry, itchy skin, then progresses to small raised bumps. Eventually the skin begins to become red and angry in appearance. When treated, this same order is how it tends to get better as well. First the itch improves followed by the rash and finally the skin returns to its normal color.
Eczema is caused by an overactive immune system and a defect in the cellular layer of the skin that typically locks-in all of your natural moisture. Common triggers from our environment include hot or cold temperatures, allergens such as pet danders or even dust and in some people certain foods. The bodys strong reaction to these triggers causes inflammation of the skin and the cascade of symptoms and changes that follow. For this reason, treatment is primarily focused on calming the immune system and replacing moisture into the skin .

Lemon Juice For Dark Spots
Some DIY bloggers claim that the vitamin C and citric acid in lemon juice can act as a natural skin brightener, but putting lemon juice on your skin is never a good idea.
Why its bad: At a pH level of about 2, lemon juice is much too acidic for your skin, which naturally has a pH level of about 5.5. Not only can lemon juice cause severe dryness, burning and painful blisters, it can also make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Any lemon or lime juice left on the skin in the sun can cause berloque dermatitis or phytophotodermatitis, also known as lime disease. The juice causes a chemical reaction that can make skin hypersensitive to sunlight. Symptoms of this condition include itching, burning, stinging and large blisters on the affected area.
Try this instead: For the brightening benefits of vitamin C without these harmful side effects, its better to choose a vitamin C serum. We love Obagi Professional-C Serum 20% because it helps brighten the complexion, encourages collagen production and provides superior antioxidant protection.
Fighting Inflammation Like A Fire
How do we fight a house fire? With water. We also use water when tending to atopic dermatitis. We need to rehydrate that dry skin and no moisturizer is as effective at rehydrating dry skin than plain water.
You need to bathe and soak in lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes, which is long enough to rehydrate but not so long as to further weaken the skin barrier significantly. When you add bleach to the water, you have a low-risk treatment that bacteria can never become resistant to.
Another way to fight fire is with a fire extinguisher. Thats how I think of topical steroids and other anti-inflammatory medications. We must learn to use them cautiously but effectively, in pulses, like fire extinguishers.
You also can fight fire by smothering it my analogy for eczema skin occlusion with barrier ointments, clothing, or plastic wrap. Occlusion helps retain moisture, blocks entry of irritants, allergens and microbes, and promotes healing by creating a physical barrier against scratching.

A Compromised Skin Barrier
A basic skin care regimen should focus on the fundamental aspects of atopic dermatitis. In atopic dermatitis theres a skin barrier function problem. The people with the worst atopic dermatitis have absent or abnormal skin proteins in which the cells at the upper layers of the skin, called keratinocytes, are not producing appropriate proteins. That can reduce the skins ability to do all of the things that its supposed to do.
For example, because were mostly made of water, normally the skin is supposed to keep water in. When you have the impaired skin barrier that comes with atopic dermatitis, the skin isnt able to hold water in, and so it gets very dry.
Whats more, that compromised skin barrier allows for the penetration of many chemical irritants and potential allergens, which may become true allergens for an individual. On top of that, once those microbes have gotten through, an increased number of microbes can penetrate the skin barrier, and the skin is less capable of combatting bacteria and viruses to prevent a full-blown infection.
