How Do You Treat Eczema In The Winter

Moisturize your eczema-prone skin as soon as you step out of the shower.

The most important habit aside from perhaps modifying how you shower is to moisturize as soon as youre out. Friedler recommends using a cream or an ointment, as both are thicker than lotions, while your skin is still damp. You want to lock in some of that moisture so you can pat yourself dry and leave a little bit of water still on the skin and that’s when you get on your moisturizers, she says.

The Cerave Moisturizing Cream is a great post-shower option, with hyaluronic acid that hydrates the skin and ceramides that protect the skin barrier. If your skin is very dry, consider applying Aquaphor Healing Ointment all over or at least on the eczema-prone areas. The ointment moisturizes and creates a sealant over the skin with ingredients like petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin alcohol, and panthenol.

In addition to adding one of these moisturizers into your routine, Friedler recommends using a humidifier to add moisture back into the dry air. Revieweds favorite is the Vicks V745A, which can run all night and produces as much steam as a hot shower, but with half as much water and energy.

Know Where Eczema Is Most Challenging In Adults

One common frustration about adult eczema is that its usually front and center, on the face and neck. The skin on the face is thinner than elsewhere on the body, so its more sensitive, Wu explains. Facial eczema can be triggered by cosmetics or skin-care products, according to the National Eczema Society. In adults, its frequently found on the eyelids, where it can cause red, flaky, swollen upper and even lower eyelids, according to the AAD. It can also develop around the mouth. Its obviously more visible to others when it occurs on the face, so its important to treat it sooner rather than later, says Wu.

The face is not the only area that can be affected. Eczema patches on the body can become thick and discolored, especially after weeks to months of scratching, and they can develop scabs. The discoloration can persist even months after the itching goes away, says Wu. Thickened skin from years of scratching may even itch all the time, the AAD notes.

Relief For Sensitive Skin

The key for people with sensitive skin may lie in a lotion that is formulated for skin repair and contains the mortar ingredients in their proper proportions, according to a study by Elias and his colleague, Mao-Qiang Man, MD, also a research scientist with the San Francisco Veterans Administration Health Care System-affiliated Northern California Institute for Research and Education.

The initial finding showed that a special formula of the lipids in their proper proportions lowered cytokine levels in the blood, decreasing inflammation.

Elias and Mao-Qiang are planning two larger-scale studies in China. One will compare the effect of a lotion designed for barrier repair on cytokines in the blood with that of other off-the-shelf moisturizers. The other study will look into how much of the body needs to be covered regularly with the barrier repair formula for it to be effective.

In addition, UCSF Dermatology professor Theodora Mauro, MD, is carrying out studies to look at whether fixing the mortar in the skin can not only reduce inflammation in the skin but affect systemic inflammation that plays a role in chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes.

The notion that repairing the brick wall could lead to these kinds of whole-body benefits is a relatively new one. Elias believes that for a long time, the barrier function of the skin has been underappreciated because it fulfills its role so well.

Whats The Best Eyelid Eczema Treatment

If you do have eczema on your eyelids, youll want to do your best to avoid your triggers. This can range from pretty easy to completely ludicrous, depending on what specifically incites your eczema. If you cant steer clear of your triggers, or if doing so isnt enough to calm your eyelid eczema, you may need some extra help from a pro.

This is one of the hardest forms of eczema to treat with medication because of the sensitive area we are treating, Dr. Rodney says. We have to make sure your eyemeaning your eyeballis safe, as some prescriptions can lead to complications like glaucoma.

To treat any form of eczema, experts will often recommend topical corticosteroids to battle inflammation, the Mayo Clinic says, but these can be too strong on your delicate eyelid skin. If your doctor decides a corticosteroid cream is the best treatment for your case of eczema, theyll likely only prescribe it for a short period of time because it can cause thinning of your eyelids and the skin around your eyes, Cynthia Bailey, M.D., a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and president and CEO of Advanced Skin Care and Dermatology Inc., tells SELF. This treatment needs to be supervised by a physician, Dr. Bailey says.

Dr. Rodney also suggests placing a thin layer of petroleum jelly around and on your eyelids twice a day to reinforce the protective skin barrier, hydrate the dry skin, and reduce itching.

Exederm Flare Control Cream

Exederm Flare Control Cream contains 1% hydrocortisone, which can reduce inflammation and itching, allowing your skin to heal. Because OTC steroid creams arent as potent as prescription-strength, theyre extremely unlikely to cause adverse side effects, so long as theyre used as directed, according to the National Eczema Society. Its when a steroid creamof any strengthis used too often or over an extended period of time that side effects can occur, such as thinning skin, increased hair growth of very fine hair, and perioral dermatitis .

Because this particular eczema cream is the only paraben-free steroid treatment available OTC, Idriss often recommends it to her hypersensitive patients, or those with severely cracked eczema. Patients suffering from eczema that develop dry and severe cracks are more prone to becoming sensitized to certain ingredients and develop allergies over time, she says. Thats why, in general, I try to recommend eczema treatments with simpler and gentler formulas.

Controlling Eczema By Moisturizing

Keeping your skins moisture intact is one of the most important things you can do to help control your eczema. Its important to understand how and when to properly moisturize and which products are best to use when you have eczema.

Tips when moisturizing

  • If you use a prescription topical medication, apply it as directed, before you moisturize.
  • Apply a thick layer of moisturizer all over your skin within three minutes of bathing or showering to lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.
  • Moisturize your skin at least twice a day.
  • Soften moisturizer by rubbing it between your hands and then apply it to your body using the palm of your hand.
  • If the moisturizer feels tacky on your skin, dont remove the excess. It will be absorbed within a few minutes.
  • Moisturize your hands every time you wash them or when they come into contact with water.

Finding the right moisturizer

Finding a moisturizer that works can be a challenge. What works for one person may not work for another and as the condition of your skin changes, so can the effectiveness of a product. A manufacturer may also change the formulation of a product periodically as well.

Ointments

Ointments such as petroleum jelly and mineral oil are usually the first choice for eczema treatment as they have the highest oil content and are very good at sealing in moisture. If you dont like how ointments feel on your skin, the next best alternative is a cream.

The Moisturizing Formula Matters

Signs of over-moisturizing the skin // Can you MOISTURIZE TOO MUCH? @DrDrayzday

No one likes to feel greasy. But moisturizer plus humidity can make you feel like youre baking in your own skin, says Dr. Eddie, who lives and works in the infamously hot and humid environment of Houston, Texas.

I hate greasy creams myself. When I cant twist a knob on my lamp or open a door handle without having it slip in my hands, or find myself hesitating to put clothes on over moisturized skin, thats a problem, he says. Worse, it becomes an obstacle for eczema sufferers to properly moisturize.

So he used his medical know-how and real-world experience to formulate Dr. Eddies Happy Cappy Moisturizing Cream for eczema which is thick enough to reduce water loss from eczema-prone skin while remaining light enough to prevent that sweating out the cream sensation.

Its tempting to ease up on your moisturizing routine when its hot, and I understand that, says Dr. Eddie, but summer comes with its own skin triggers that require you to keep protecting eczema-prone skin.

How Do Emollients Work

People with eczema have a tendency for their skin to become dry. Dry skin tends to flare up and become inflamed into patches of eczema. Emollients prevent the skin from becoming dry and help to protect the skin from irritants. This helps to prevent itch and reduces the frequency of eczema flare-ups. So, the main role of emollients is to prevent eczema from flaring up.

Fighting Histamine With Diet

Building upon an anti-inflammatory foundation, you may want to tackle potential histamine issues. An easy way to test whether this is an issue for you? Take an anti-histamine and see if your itchiness goes down. If it does, you might want to introduce some anti-histamine and anti-allergy strategies into your diet.

The first step is consuming more quercetin-rich foods. Quercetin is found in onions, asparagus, kale, broccoli, apples, tomatoes, green tea and berries. Quercetin is thought to help stabilize mast cells to lower histamine levels and inflammation in addition to supporting gut health11.

Safety Advice When Using Emollients

Best Over The Counter Eczema Treatment

Keep away from fire, flames and cigarettes when using all types of emollients . Dressings, clothing and bedding that have been in contact with an emollient can easily catch fire. Washing fabrics at high temperatures may reduce the build-up of an emollient, but does not remove it completely.

Use a clean spoon or spatula to remove emollients from a pot or tub. This reduces the risk of infections from contaminated pots.

Be careful not to slip when using emollients in a bath or shower, or on a tiled floor. Protect the floor with a non-slip mat, towel or sheet. Wear protective gloves, wash your bath or shower afterwards with hot water and washing-up liquid, then dry with a kitchen towel.

Be careful when using aqueous cream. It can cause burning, stinging, itching and redness for some people, especially children with atopic eczema. Read more information about the safety of aqueous cream from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency .

Preventing The Spread Of Eczema

Preventing the spread of eczema depends on the type of eczema a person has. For example, contact dermatitis will stop spreading once a person removes the source of irritation. Eczema that has become infected may require topical or oral antibiotic treatment.

One of the main ways people can prevent eczema from becoming more inflamed and itchy is to avoid scratching. Treating flare-ups as quickly as possible can remove the temptation to scratch. It may also help if people keep fingernails trimmed or wear cotton gloves to bed.

How Is Eczema Diagnosed What Tests Are Done

Your healthcare provider will take a close look at your skin. They will look for classic signs of eczema such as a redness and dryness. They will ask about the symptoms youre experiencing.

Usually your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose eczema based on examining your skin. However, when there is doubt, they may perform the following tests:

  • An allergy skin test.
  • Blood tests to check for causes of the rash that might be unrelated to dermatitis.
  • A skin biopsy to distinguish one type of dermatitis from another.

How To Use Emollients

10 tips to HEAL YOUR ECZEMA| Dr Dray

Use your emollient frequently and in large amounts. Many people find it helpful to keep separate supplies of emollients at work or school.

To apply the emollient:

  • use a large amount
  • do not rub it in smooth it into the skin in the same direction the hair grows
  • for very dry skin, apply the emollient 2 to 4 times a day, or as prescribed by a doctor
  • after a bath or shower, gently dry the skin and then immediately apply the emollient while the skin is still moist

If youre exposed to irritants at work that cause your contact dermatitis, make sure you apply emollients regularly during and after work.

Do not share emollients with other people.

Researchers Explain Why Some Lotions Do More Harm Than Good

Visit any drugstore and youll find a dizzying array of choices for skin-care products.

Thats no surprise, says UC San Francisco dermatology professor Peter Elias, MD, since at least half of Americans, maybe more, have sensitive skin or a diagnosed skin condition such as eczema, atopic dermatitis or rosacea.

But moisturizers and other products may be doing as much harm as good, especially for people with sensitive skin, according to Elias 45 years of research on the subject, which started with complaints from his patients.

They were telling me that theyre applying some expensive stuff but it only provided relief for the first hour or so, and then their skin felt drier than ever, he says.

He wasnt able to tell them what was going on, and wanted to find out.

How Do You Treat Eczema In The Summer

Wear loose cotton clothing if heat triggers your eczema.

While you should still avoid harsh soaps and moisturize regularly during warm months, the irritants that trigger eczema in the winter are different in the summer. If you know your eczema flares up in the heat, keep it at bay by wearing cotton fabrics that breathe or wicking fabrics that keep moisture away from your skin. It may seem counterintuitive to draw moisture away after moisturizing your skin, but overheating and staying in damp, sweaty clothing may only irritate your skin more.

When the weather is warmer, skin tends to be less dry, but you should still moisturize eczema-prone skin. Swap out a thick cream or ointment for a lotion, which has a lighter consistency. A great pick is the Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion because it moisturizes with ingredients like glycerin and shea butter, protects the skin barrier with ceramides, and leaves a non-greasy finish.
