There are different types of eczema, although the most common form is atopic eczema. While it is more frequent in children, it can continue into adulthood. Eczema causes the skin to dry out and become itchy, red and cracked. It is a chronic condition, which means it is usually recurs long term. If you have eczema you may find that it affects the area around your eyes. This is because the condition is most common in places where there are folds of skin.

Eczema around the eyes will often worsen if you rub the irritated area. Other factors that may cause a flare-up include the consumption of certain foods, weather conditions and stress or anxiety.There appears to be a genetic component to eczema, with the condition running in families. It also often occurs alongside other conditions such as hay fever or asthma.If you have eczema around your eyes, you will also be more prone to blepharitis. This is a condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids, making them severely red and swollen.

There is also a fairly rare disorder called atopic keratoconjunctivitis . This is a severe eye allergy that can result in cataracts, eye infections and even blindness.While normal eye eczema will not affect the eye and vision itself, ATK can damage the cornea and cause scarring. There are three main types of eczema treatment around the eyes: corticosteroids, moisturizers, and Calcineurin inhibitors.

Using moisturizing creams may be great for relieving itching and dryness. And there are several options available both with and without a prescription. When the signs of eczema around the eyes are mild, this may be one of the most effective treatments.

When inflammation occurs around the eyes, in this case, you may use calcineurin inhibitors. This can be taken as tablets or applied as a cream to the affected area.

Furthermore, Corticosteroids can be used for both redness and inflammation. However, corticosteroid tablets only reserved that situation when side effects can be severe, including osteoporosis and diabetes.

Medicines To Reduce Inflammation

Your doctor may recommend medication to reduce the underlying skin inflammation causing eczema around your eyes. A short course of a low concentration steroid ointment or cream — such as 1 percent hydrocortisone — is often the first choice.

If your interior eyelids are involved, your doctor may prescribe steroid eye drops as well. Do not use an over-the-counter steroid cream or ointment around your eyes without first checking with your doctor to be sure it’s safe for you.

Although short-term treatment with topical steroid medicine is often effective for controlling eye eczema flareups, side effects can occur with long-term use.

If side effects are a concern or your eye eczema does not improve with steroid treatment, your doctor may recommend another type of topical anti-inflammatory medication, such as pimecrolimus cream or tacrolimus ointment . Frequently rubbing your eyes can change the shape of your cornea. As the cornea starts to change shape, it begins to bulge. It becomes cone-shaped. This change in shape can cause the following warning signs:

• Nearsightedness
• Sensitivity to light, especially when driving at night
• Constantly changing prescription for eyeglasses or contacts

Signs of keratoconus

If you have any warning signs of keratoconus, ask your eye doctor to take a close look at the shape of your cornea.

Treatment For Eye Complications Linked To Eczema

There are many creams and ointments for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, ranging from over-the-counter preparations to prescription corticosteroid creams, Seitzman says.

Never use any of these on the eye area without consulting a doctor, because, as research published in 2017 in the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice suggests, the use of topical steroids may be associated with glaucoma, probably from the cream seeping into the eyes.

• Topical calcineurin inhibitors. These are used to decrease inflammation of the immune system that is causing flareups.
• Skin barrier-repairing moisturizers. These help to keep moisture in and repair the skin.
• . Ultraviolet A or B light waves can be used to treat moderate eczema.
• Wet wrap therapy. This treatment is used for severe eczema. Three lukewarm baths per day are given, followed by the application of topical medications and moisturizers. The skin is then wrapped in wet gauze.

Most Common Treatment For Eczema Around The Eyes

Most people treat their eye eczema with one of three products lotion, cortisone cream, or Vaseline. These three options are easy to find in our medicine cabinets and are useful for dry skin, rashes, and scar healing.

How To Use Topical Corticosteroids

Do not be afraid to apply the treatment to affected areas to control your eczema.

Unless instructed otherwise by a doctor, follow the directions on the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine.

This will give details of how much to apply.

Most people only have to apply it once a day as there’s no evidence there’s any benefit to applying it more often.

When using a topical corticosteroid:

• apply your emollient first and ideally wait around 30 minutes until the emollient has soaked into your skin, or apply the corticosteroid at a different time of day
• apply the recommended amount of the topical corticosteroid to the affected area
• continue to use it until 48 hours after the flare-up has cleared so the inflammation under the skin surface is treated

Occasionally, your doctor may suggest using a topical corticosteroid less frequently, but over a longer period of time. This is designed to help prevent flare-ups.

This is sometimes called weekend treatment, where a person who has already gained control of their eczema uses the topical corticosteroid every weekend on the trouble sites to prevent them becoming active again.
