Lipid Rich Moisturizers Help Heal And Support The Skin Barrier In Eczema

I know that applying a really good moisturizer to eczema-prone skin is critically important to hydrate skin and help hold water throughout the skin layers. Lipids in a moisturizer also replenish lost lipids in the skin barrier. Both elements are important to help weakened eczema-prone skin resist transepidermal water loss . I use moisturizers with ceramides and skin-friendly botanical oils.

Oral Supplements Containing Ceramide

Im going to move on to look at the topic of ceramide supplements. Even though the science and data for nutritional ceramide supplements are still preliminary, they seem promising because these oral supplements containing ceramide aim to overcome the limitations of low amounts of ceramides in food and skincare as well as poor absorption through the skin. These nutritional supplements and beauty drinks containing ceramide have been available in Japan as early as 199726 and are widely available today.

In this section, we will be looking at the science behind ceramides supplements and one of the newer and more interesting ceramide supplements in Singapore.

The Type Of Ceramide Does Not Matter

There are 9 subtypes of ceramides, each conveniently named ceramide 1 to 9. The functions of each of them are quite similar so it does not really matter which one you use. You will find that Ceramide-1 and Ceramide-3 are two of the more common subtypes of Ceramides in moisturisers.

The protective lipid layer of the skin comprises of ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol.

What Parts Of The Body Does Eczema Affect

Eczema can affect any part of the body. Children often experience eczema on their faces and hands. Adults with eczema may notice the symptoms in other parts of the body such as the back, chest, legs, arms, neck, groin area, folds of the arms and knees and scalp.

Specific types of eczema such as hand eczema or finger eczema as the name suggests, is often limited to the hands, fingers and legs. Dandruff caused by seborrheic dermatitis is mostly experienced on the scalp. Stasis dermatitis affects the lower legs and contact dermatitis occurs only in parts that are exposed to the skin irritants.

How We Chose The Best Vitamins And Supplements For Dry Skin

To create our list of the best vitamin and mineral supplements for dry skin, we compared brands and products by looking at a number of factors. These included:

  • Ingredients – We looked for supplements that used plant-based or vegan sources for their ingredients versus animal-derived sources. We also chose products made without artificial fillers, colors, or sweeteners.
  • Lab Testing – We prioritized supplements that undergo independent third-party lab testing for quality and safety.
  • Allergen Free – The best vitamin supplements should also be free from soy, gluten, dairy, and peanuts.
  • Backed By Science – It’s important to know what is included in a supplement and why. We looked for supplements that were either backed by clinical research, doctor-formulated, or offered the science behind their vitamins and minerals.
  • Customer Experience – We checked reviews from actual customers to see if the supplement worked as described and if they recommended it. The best brands also offered a money-back guarantee on their products.

Vitamin E is a well-praised, beloved skincare ingredient that many love to swear by. Indeed, it is helpful and essential for skin healing and protection. However, there is certainly still a limit to just how much you can push the usage of these little capsules. The organic compound performs several essential functions in the body – but just like other essential functions, too much is not good for anybody. Even water, the one elixir that brings all of us together, has a limit to how much you should consume it.

Here is a list of risks and advisory facts to keep in mind before getting too comfortable with using Vitamin E capsules: –

  • The WHO recommends a minimum of 15 milligrams of Vitamin E consumption for the average adults nutrition needs. Over 1000 milligrams of Vitamin E in its natural form and 670 milligrams in the synthetic form are considered harmful.
  • Vitamin E oil should not be overused on oily and sensitive skin. This is partly because oily skin already produces a lot of sebum, which gives the skin a sufficient topical dose of Vitamin E. Additionally, overuse of the thick Vitamin E oil could clog your pores and cause more breakouts and skin problems. Sensitive skin is prone to breakouts which can be worsened by this quality of the compound.

Preclinical Evidence From Animal Studies

The role of vitamin E in relieving inflammation and erythema was studied by Hayashi et al. using an NC/Nga mouse model. In their study, mice were subcutaneously injected in their backs with a 4% -TP every other day for 2 weeks. Sensitization was then carried out using 5% picryl chloride solution followed by 0.05% PC to induce AD-like inflammation. Mice treated with PC without vitamin E treatment showed a decrease in vitamin E levels and a marked increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels at the stage of peak symptom severity. Conversely, changes in thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and vitamin E levels in the skin and serum were significantly inhibited in -TP-treated mice. Furthermore, levels of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase increased at peak severity in vitamin E-treated mice, as opposed to control mice. Mice treated with -TP were also found to have decreased levels of inflammation-associated factors such as immunoglobulin E , cyclo-oxygenase-2, tumour necrosis factor- and nuclear factor- .

No adverse effects of vitamin E were observed in the animal studies discussed above. Collectively, vitamin E may aid in ameliorating the symptoms of AD by suppressing OS, inflammation and preventing further deterioration of the skin barrier function by restoring the water-retaining capacity of the SC. A summary of the studies showing the preclinical evidence for vitamin E in animals is presented in Table 2.

Can Vitamin D Help With Eczema

Vitamin D has an interesting relationship with eczema – although there are plenty of anecdotal accounts of vitamin D supplements making a difference to eczema, theres very little scientific evidence to support this at the moment.

However, there is a type of treatment called which is used in patients with very severe eczema and vitamin D may play a big part in it.

During phototherapy, youre placed into a treatment booth and exposed to UV rays, specifically UVA, broadband UVB, and narrowband UVB rays.

Its kind of like getting into a very complex tanning booth, and although some patients come out looking like theyve had a few weeks away in the Bahamas, the aim is actually to reduce inflammation and clear up your skin.

So where does vitamin D fit into this equation? Well, as you may be aware, vitamin D is created in your body when sunlight hits your skin, or rather, when UV rays hit your skin.

Naturally, this means that phototherapy helps your body to produce vitamin D.

There are a lot of theories out there about why phytotherapy works to reduce eczema, and some think that vitamin D could be playing a part in it, but until more research is done we really cant be sure.

Ceramides In Skin Care: A Relief For Sensitive & Dry Skin Eczema And Premature Aging

12 November 2021

If you have sensitive skin or dry skin that isnt improving despite using layers of serums and moisturisers, this post is for you.

One reason you might feel that youre losing the battle against dry skin and sensitive skin is: Ceramides. Ceramides are part of the skins natural barrier against water loss a lack of ceramides can cause skin dryness and increased skin sensitivity. Dryness of the skin can cause premature skin aging and is related to conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Effect Of Ceramide Supplements On The Skin

Calming Eczema Relief Cream

Ceramide supplements have been studied in small studies in animals26-29 and humans30-33. Though the data is not quite robust yet the results so far are promising in my opinion. These studies have shown that ceramide supplements improve skin barrier function and hydration and reduce fine lines and wrinkles31,32. Ceramide supplements studied in subjects with eczema also showed improvements in their symptoms and reduction of allergy and inflammation in the skin30,33.

However, for now, ceramide supplements are unlikely to be recommended as a first line treatment for dry skin, aging or eczema until there are bigger, randomised controlled trials that would lend greater support to using ceramide supplements.

At present, our understanding and data available on dietary ceramides is also incomplete, which presents another barrier to interpreting these studies on ceramide supplements. We know that ceramides are large molecules that get digested by the small intestine before being transported by the blood vessels34-37. The precise proportions of these oral ceramides in our diet that get eventually assimilated to the skin or instead, get directed elsewhere to other parts of the body are still obscure.

Ceramide nutritional supplements are also likely useful in patients who have dry skin but are unable to use ceramides in their skincare or want the skin of the entire body to be better moisturised .

Vitamin Deficiencies That Show Up On Your Skin

A good skincare routine goes a long way in keeping your skin healthy. And this includes nourishing your skin from the inside out. Not having a healthy, balanced diet can lead to certain vitamin deficiencies which will, in turn, impact your skin. Here are a few skin-deep signs of vitamin deficiencies that you should watch out for.

Vitamin B12 And Eczema

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, has also been studied in eczema. Specifically, topical Vitamin B12 formulations have been studied. Thesestudies have shown improvement in eczema symptoms when cream containing 0.07% Vitamin B12 was applied to the skin.

Expertsthink that topical Vitamin B12 may improve eczema symptoms by lowering nitric oxide levels in the skin. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels, which can lead to swelling and redness in some cases.

Topical steroids, which are often used to treat mild to moderate eczema, can also help to lower nitric oxide levels in the skin. Importantly, long-term use of steroids may lead to arebound increase in nitric oxide levels when the steroid is stopped.

In turn, this means the skin discomfort, redness and swelling linked to eczema may increase. It is not known whether Vitamin B12 topical creams may cause the same results after discontinuation.

Preclinical Evidence From Cellular Studies

To investigate the role of vitamin E in the regulation of OS, Masaki et al. cultivated HaCaT cells with -TP for 24 h and measured the level of intracellular glutathione, a crucial protein involved in removing excess intracellular reactive oxygen species. Glutathione levels were reported to increase at every tested -TP concentration, and cells cultured with 50 M -TP exhibited resistance against H2O2. A deeper investigation on the mechanism of action of -TP using DL-buthionine–sulfoximine, an inhibitor of -glutamyl-cysteine synthetase, showed -TP increases intracellular glutathione level via upregulation of the -glutamyl-cysteine synthetase heavy subunit mRNA . In another study, Gehin et al. suggested the preventive effects of vitamin E against deleterious cutaneous cell damage. A water-soluble analogue of vitamin E, Trolox at 100 M, was shown to reduce lipid peroxidation and increase enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase concurrently in glyphosate-based herbicide-treated keratinocytes . These findings strongly suggest the effectiveness of vitamin E in suppressing OS in keratinocytes.

AD is known to be associated with keratinocyte damage and impaired skin barrier function. Transepidermal water loss is the functional biomarker of skin benefit. Parish et al. have shown keratinocytes treated with 20 and 40 M of -TP for 18 days experienced a reduction in TEWL as compared to the controls.

To Fight Collagen Loss I Use Retinoids And The Aha Glycolic Acid On My Eczema

Retinoids are applied at night. This included retinol or prescription tretinoin, the two best retinoids for countering aging skin. Retinol is less irritating and I use it more often than tretinoin. I apply Retinol Intensive Night Cream and top it with either Glycolic Acid 15% Face Cream or Daily Face Creamboosted with Omega Enriched Face Oil.

Both of these products are fragrance free and hypoallergenic. Retinol is easier to tolerate because glycolic acid products need to have acid pH and over 10% concentration to work and this can make them irritating to barrier compromised complexions like those struggling with eczema. Also, Retinol Night Cream includes the high concentration green tea antioxidants so I don’t need to apply my Green Tea Antioxidant Therapy at night when I use the Retinol .

Millions of people around the world have eczema. In fact, its spreading at near epidemic proportions. Unfortunately, most eczema sufferers never find a cure: The skin care products they try either dont work at all or work only for a short time. A treatment that works today might be useless in just a few weeks or months. The same is true of medications once the medication is stopped, the condition returns. Thousands of doctors now recommend a shielding lotion as eczema treatment, but you may also have underlying nutritional deficiencies contributing to the problem. Find out what they are, and what you can do about them.

One of the primary nutritional factors behind eczema is vitamin B deficiency. The usual suspects are B3 , B5 , B6 , PABA B7 .

Eczema sufferers might benefit from taking a variety of vitamin Bs such as B3 for producing fat to help form the protective layer of the skin, B5 to form antibodies and healthy red blood cells, B6 to help with the processing of amino acids and B7 to help with cell reproduction and the functioning of our oil glands.
