Seborrheic Dermatitis

Thought by many scientist to be a type of fungal infection typical symptoms are thick, crusty, yellowish flakes of skin on the infants scalp, though it can also appear on the eyes and nose. How To Diagnose Scalp Eczema

Scalp eczema: Symptoms, treatment, and remedies

There is no specific test that helps in decisively diagnosing scalp eczema as the fungus and yeast that are naturally present on everyone’s scalp play a role in the development of scalp eczema.

Usually, doctors can diagnose seborrheic dermatitis from a physical examination.

Also, doctors may collect a small sample by skin scraping to determine the presence of fungal infection and to rule out any other similar scalp conditions such as allergic reactions, psoriasis, etc.

As per a study conducted by the Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine of Pusan National University, and Kyungpook National University, Korea, Dermoscopy helps to a great extent in differentiating seborrhoeic dermatitis from scalp psoriasis clinically.

Following a skincare routine can help keep symptoms under control. Wash affected areas daily with a gentle, zinc-containing cleanser and follow up with a moisturizer. Healthy lifestyle habits, like managing stress and getting plenty of sleep, can also improve skin.

Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis is aimed at removing scales, reducing itch and calming the inflammation thats causing redness and swelling.

In infants, using an emollient such as mineral oil or petroleum jelly to gently loosen scales is usually all thats needed. Care can be more complicated for adults, who often need ongoing treatment and self-care to help prevent flare-ups.

Dermatologists usually begin treating mild cases with a topical antifungal cream or medicated shampoo, such as a prescription anti-fungal shampoo or over-the-counter dandruff product.

If the condition is more severe, intermittent use of a topical corticosteroid or calcineurin inhibitor may be required.

Scalp Eczema Causes And Symptoms

Although scalp eczema is usually a childhood condition, it can also affect adults. Symptoms of the disease include itchy, dry, and flaky patches. In young children, atopic dermatitis is often the cause. In adults, the disorder typically starts at puberty and continues throughout life. This itchy and dry skin can affect any part of the body, including the hair, nose, and eyebrows.

The causes of scalp eczema are unclear, but proper diagnosis can make the condition easier to manage. Fortunately, there are many effective treatments available. For instance, you can reduce or even eliminate the symptoms of your scalp eczema by avoiding medicated or harsh products. If the problem isnt controlled, you can seek help from your primary care provider. It is also important to consult with a dermatologist if you are suffering from a more chronic case.

The symptoms of scalp eczema include itching and scaling, which can be treated with a topical solution. Taking good care of your skin and avoiding suspected irritants can help lessen your symptoms. Managing risk factors can also be helpful. If youre able to avoid a particular chemical or allergen, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing the condition. This can help you to manage your scalp eczema.

Etiology Of Seborrheic Dermatitis

The exact pathophysiology remains unclear. Malassezia organisms are probably not the cause but are a cofactor linked to a T-cell depression, increased sebum levels, and an activation of the alternative complement pathway. Persons prone to this dermatitis also may have a skin-barrier dysfunction.

Because seborrheic dermatitis is uncommon in preadolescent children, and tinea capitis is uncommon after adolescence, dandruff in a child is more likely to represent a fungal infection. A fungal culture should be completed for confirmation.

Various medications may flare or induce seborrheic dermatitis. These medications include auranofin, aurothioglucose, buspirone, chlorpromazine, cimetidine, ethionamide, fluorouracil, gold, griseofulvin, haloperidol, interferon alfa, lithium, methoxsalen, methyldopa, phenothiazines, psoralens, stanozolol, thiothixene, and trioxsalen.

How Is Seborrheic Dermatitis Diagnosed

Seborrheic dermatitis is an easy condition to diagnosis because of its appearance on the affected skin and where it appears on your body. No blood, urine or allergy tests are needed. Your dermatologist may perform a skin biopsy to rule out other diseases if your condition does not respond to treatment.

Causes Of Eczema On The Scalp

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, though its believed to be caused by genetic and environmental factors that decrease the skins protective barrier and cause inflammatory reactions.

Several risk factors have been found to trigger eczema flare-ups in both children and adults. Common triggers include:

  • Stress and illness
  • HIV
  • Alcoholism

Age is another factor. Infants up to 3 months and adults ages 30 to 60 are at a higher risk for developing scalp eczema.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Is Not Eczema

In infants, this condition is widely known as cradle cap. In adults, it is referred to as seborrheic dermatitis. These patches, which produce dandruff that is often white or yellow, are not eczema. In fact, what you have is inflammation which can also itch. However, the condition is caused by a fungus rather than by an allergic reaction, which is why the term seborrheic eczema is inappropriate.

Are There Any Universal Triggers To All The Different Types Of Eczema

Dermatitis or Eczema – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment | Dr. Rohit Batra Explains

According to Dr. Lio, soaps and detergents can trigger almost anyone to flare up in the right context. I would also argue that stress is a fairly universal trigger, he added. Allergens are much more nuanced and individualized. Environmental stressors like heat and cold are fairly common, but not universal.

Patient information: See related handout on seborrheic dermatitis, written by the authors of this article.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting areas of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. Lipophilic yeasts of the Malassezia genus, as well as genetic, environmental and general health factors, contribute to this disorder. Scalp seborrhea varies from mild dandruff to dense, diffuse, adherent scale. Facial and trunk seborrhea is characterized by powdery or greasy scale in skin folds and along hair margins. Treatment options include application of selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc or ketoconazole-containing shampoos, topical ketoconazole cream or terbinafine solution, topical sodium sulfacetamide and topical corticosteroids.

The etiology of seborrheic dermatitis remains unknown, although many factors, including hormonal, have been implicated. This chronic inflammatory skin disorder is generally confined to areas of the head and trunk where sebaceous glands are most prominent. When seborrheic dermatitis occurs in the neonatal period, it usually disappears by six to 12 months of age, suggesting that it may be a response to maternal hormone stimulation.1

How Is Eczema Diagnosed

There is no specific test used to diagnose eczema. The doctor will look at the rash and ask about symptoms, the child’s past health, and the family’s health. If family members have any atopic conditions, that’s an important clue.

The doctor will rule out other conditions that can cause skin inflammation, and might recommend that your child see a dermatologist or an allergist.

The doctor may ask you to ban some foods from your child’s diet, switch detergents or soaps, or make other changes for a time to see if your child is reacting to something.

Can I Dye My Hair If I Have Scalp Eczema

Got Eczema On Your Scalp? We Know A Secret!

Many hair dyes contain ingredients that may irritate the scalp or cause an allergic reaction. If you want to dye your hair, choose a product that is free of phenylenediamines, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide. If you already have a flare-up, wait for a few days for it to subside.

Remember to do a patch test before you begin the hair-dyeing process. Deep conditioning your scalp with a hydrating conditioner at least two days before dyeing your hair ensures that the scalp does not become dry and flaky.

Note:

Hair does not react to dye, but sensitive scalps do. Consult with your doctor if you want to dye your hair.

What Do The Ecz

Seborrheic dermatitis isnt contagious and is not an allergy, although some allergies can mimic it, said Dr. Peter Lio, clinical assistant professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Northwestern Universitys Feinberg School of Medicine. A correct diagnosis, he added, requires careful evaluation by a dermatologist.

Seborrheic dermatitis can also overlap with atopic dermatitis, especially in infants. We see this overlap in young adults, as well, usually in those with more severe atopic dermatitis, Lio said. They can develop a condition that some call head and neck dermatitis that seems to be very closely related to seborrheic dermatitis and is treated similarly.

Shampoos And Hair Products

There are several over-the-counter or prescription hair products that may help seborrheic dermatitis:

Be careful when selecting shampoos for your hair if you have atopic or contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis causes sensitive skin. A certain ingredient might cause contact dermatitis or further irritate your skin.

Consider any additional hair products when managing your scalp dermatitis. Conditioners, gels, hair sprays, and hair accessories may all trigger symptoms. Be mindful about what products you use and eliminate any that may trigger dermatitis symptoms.

Prevention: Eating An Eczema Friendly Diet

Many people have found that changing their diet has helped them experience fewer and less miserable eczema flare-ups. As eczema may be due to an inflammatory response caused by an overactive immune system, reducing inflammation in the body is vital. One of the easiest ways to do this is to begin an eczema-friendly diet.

Its true: the word diet is tossed around enough to make anyone wary, especially as a solution to losing weight fast. But diet is about so much more than weight. Including and avoiding certain foods is an effective way of managing inflammation and preventing eczema.

It is important to eat a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods. This includes fruits and vegetables such as apples, cherries, blueberries, and greens, which are known to reduce inflammation. It also means boosting your intake of healthy fats and food rich in omega 3s like salmon.

The jury is still out on whether supplements actually do much to combat eczema. However, probiotic and prebiotic supplements have been found effective. Prebiotics can also be added to your diet as they are commonly found in dandelion greens, onions, garlic, leeks, and asparagus.
