Trials Of Supplementation For The Treatment Of Ad
Limited data is available regarding vitamin D supplementation in the therapy of AD, and conflicting results have been noted. A pilot study of 11 children with mild AD showed no significant difference between children given one month of vitamin D versus those given placebo . Similarly, in a trial of 45 patients, no significant difference in SCORAD was seen between the groups receiving vitamin D versus placebo . One trial, however, did note benefit. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 60 AD patients found significant improvement in SCORAD in patients given vitamin D daily versus placebo .
Dietary Supplements For Established Atopic Eczema In Adults And Children
Eczema is a skin condition characterised by an itchy, red rash, which affects 5% to 20% of people worldwide. There is no cure, but many treatments can help improve the skin’s condition, making life easier. In those for whom these treatments do not work well or who fear their long-term effects, there is often a belief that either something in their diet, or something missing in their diet, is making their eczema worse.
This review looked at the following dietary supplements : fish oil, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, vitamin E, pyridoxine , sea buckthorn oil, hempseed oil, and sunflower oil.
Three commonly used dietary supplements are currently the subject of other Cochrane reviews .
We looked for trials comparing supplements with placebo . We included 11 randomised controlled trials when it was clear that the children or adults taking part had atopic eczema. In reviewing the trials, the main outcomes we looked for were evidence of improvement in the symptoms of eczema, such as itching or loss of sleep, in the short-term . In the longer term, we wanted to see evidence of a reduced need for treatment for the eczema or a reduction in the number of flares. We also looked for evidence of any general improvement in the eczema and in individual symptoms.

A subset of these patients with very low serum 25 D3 concentrations underwent 3 months of supplementation with 2000 IU of oral cholecalciferol daily. Further support for screening those with frequent bacterial skin infections comes from another trial. In this study, 3 weeks of supplementation with 1000 IU/day of vitamin D resulted in increased expression of cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide .
