Care For Your Skin In The Bath Or Shower

Bathe only with a mild unscented soap, such as Dove, Basis, or Olay. Use a small amount of soap. Keep the water temperature cool or warm, not hot. Soaking in the tub for a short time can be good for your skin. Doing so allows your skins outer layer to absorb water and become less dry. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Then use a soft towel to pat your skin dry without rubbing. Immediately after drying, apply a moisturizer to your skin. This helps seal in the moisture.

Emollients For Washing And Bath/shower Equipment

Soaps, shower gels and bubble baths can dry out the skin. Its best to use an emollient soap substitute or a cream-based leave-on emollient as a soap substitute.

Your GP may refer you to the Community Occupational Therapy Service if you need special bath/shower equipment for safety or if you have difficulty getting in or out of the bath/shower. They can fit a bath seat, grab-rails, a seat in the shower or an alarm if you get into difficulties.

Bath emollients make the shower tray and bath more slippery. Use non-slip bath mats to help reduce the risk of slipping. Support bars fixed to the wall in the shower or by the bath will provide extra safety when showering/bathing. Pour bath emollient into the bath after you get in rather than before. As an extra precaution its a good idea to empty out bath water before getting out of the bath. Be careful not to knock your legs, as this could lead to ulcers. Use a bandage or pad under support stockings for extra protection.

No Eczema Isnt Contagious But Heres How Secondary Infections May Spread

Infections from staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria are common in people with atopic dermatitis.

About 60 to 90 percent of people with eczema are likely to have staph bacteria on their skin, and many develop active infections that further worsen their condition, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Signs of a bacterial infection include fever swollen, sore skin that may ooze fluid yellow crust on the skin surface and small, yellow-white spots, particularly around the eczema.

Additionally, people with eczema may become infected with the herpes simplex virus, a common cause of cold sores. This can lead to a viral infection called eczema herpeticum if the herpes simplex virus invades the damaged skin.

Eczema herpeticum causes red, purple, or black blisters that may pop and form ulcers, and the infection is often accompanied by fever, swollen lymph glands, and general malaise. The blisters, which can take up to two weeks to appear after contact with the virus, first appear on the face and neck but can also appear on the hands.

Over time, the viral infection can spread throughout the body and be fatal if it travels to the brain, lungs, or liver.

It’s important that people with atopic dermatitis do not get the live-virus smallpox vaccine, as it can lead to a severe and potentially fatal infection called eczema vaccinatum.
