How To Help Face Eczema

Keep The Cleanser Simple For Both Face And Body

How I Cured My Eczema (Face/Eyelids)?

I bath or shower with my Naturally Best Bar Soap that is fragrance free and entirely hypoallergenic. This soap is in every shower and at every sink in my home. When I bathe, I only soap up soiled or body-odor prone areas of the armpits, groin, buttock and feet.

I wash my face with my Extremely Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser. I double cleanse with my Naturally Hydrating Pore Minimizing Toner. I put them together in my Skin Cleanse Zen kit.

People with extremely eczema-prone skin may need to use skin cleansing products that are even more gentle such as VaniCream Bar Soap for face and body cleansing. It is a very safe alternative but not nearly as lovely as my personal cleansing skin care routine in my opinion. I’m grateful my skin cuts me a little slack here.

What Should I Do If Over

Sadly, sometimes eczema on the face can prove extremely stubborn to the point where treatment may need to be prescribed by a doctor. “If home treatments are not helping, you may need prescription medications,” says Shah. “I usually prescribe either a topical steroid or a topical calcineurin inhibitor, a non-steroidal medication that can reduce inflammation and treat eczema.”

Shah says she sometimes prescribes special moisturizers called barrier repair creams for patients. And if the eczema is severe and not responding to topical treatments, other options include , aka light therapy. There’s a wide range of treatment options for facial eczema, so it often comes down to trial and error in order to figure out what works for you. We’d recommend always consulting your dermatologist before trying anything new.

    How Many People Have Eczema

Overall, eczema is relatively common with at least 17% of people having some sort of eczema. The most well-known type of eczema is atopic dermatitis which is typically an inherited condition where skin is dry, hypersensitive and linked to asthma, hay fever and food allergies. The combination of these conditions is called an atopic diathesis. I have this and we are the classic ‘sensitive skin’ people.

Throughout my life Ive battled with my atopic skin including:

Contact eczema is caused by an allergy. It occurs when your skin has an allergic reaction after coming into contact with a specific product. You may have been exposed to this product several times in the past without having a reaction. Indeed, one characteristic of contact eczema is that the allergy can appear suddenly.

    How Is Eczema Diagnosed

There is no specific test used to diagnose eczema. The doctor will look at the rash and ask about symptoms, the child’s past health, and the family’s health. If family members have any atopic conditions, that’s an important clue.

The doctor will rule out other conditions that can cause skin inflammation, and might recommend that your child see a dermatologist or an allergist.

The doctor may ask you to ban some foods from your child’s diet, switch detergents or soaps, or make other changes for a time to see if your child is reacting to something.

What Causes Eczemaand How To Manage It

Did you know that eczema affects over 31 million Americans? The skin condition, which leads to dry, itchy, and cracked skin, is more common than you think and often begins in childhood. In honor of Eczema Awareness Month, we asked two of our own Moms in Medicine, Dr. Joyce Teng and Dr. Sarina Elmariah, to break down everything you need to know about the causes of eczema and how you can safely manage symptoms for your little ones.

How To Tell If You Have Eczema On Your Face

It can be tricky to distinguish the difference between eczema and dry skinboth are dry, both can be itchy, and both can be irritated with harsh products.

The key difference? Eczema usually flares up as patches in specific areas, like around your eyes or nose, says Marina Peredo, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. On the body, eczema often surfaces in the creases of your arms or knees.

Other telltale signs of eczema include swelling, redness, and flakes. Or, as Dr. Peredo puts it: Eczema looks angrier.

Have Your Kids Play Outside And Get A Little Dirty

how I CURED ECZEMA / DERMATITIS washing my face with COCONUT OIL

According to the Hygiene Hypothesis, sanitary conditions have disrupted the delicate balance between our bodys inner ecology and the balance of the type of immune cells we produce. Interestingly, as a result of our current lifestyle, we are not getting colonized with some important bacteria, leading to poorly maintained gut integrity and subsequent immune system dysregulation.

An easy solution to this is to encourage your kids to play outside, get dirty and play with other kids, avoid antimicrobial chemicals for handwashing, and simply wash with plain soap and water.

My hands get dry and chapped fast like any person’s who is prone to eczema. That’s because we have a fragile skin barrier and hand washing is hard on skin. To prevent chapping and hand eczema, I wash my hands and apply skin cream designed to be gentle on hand skin:

    • I wash with my Foaming Natural Hand Soap, which is non-drying and easy rinse. I am careful to rinse well between fingers and under rings.
    • I apply my Dry Skin Hand Cream, created with water loving glycerin and barrier protecting dimethicone in a no-slippery-grip formulation. I cant live without this cream and still do dishes, wash my hands at the office over and over, or garden on the weekend.

    I Rely On Hypoallergenic Pharmaceutical

As a dermatologist, I know the value of using a good anti-aging skin care routine. I started in my late 20s during my dermatology residency and now I’m 62 years old! Time flies and for an old tanning-addicted blond California teen, I know my skin care routine has taken years off my skin aging curve. I depend on retinoids, professional AHA glycolic acid creams, green tea antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to fight the appearance of facial skin aging. Having eczema-prone skin makes anti-aging skin care is tricky and I’ve worked out the kinks for my complexion.

Proper Skin Care For Eczema Focuses On Hydrating And Soothing While Minimizing Irritation

Eczema How To Treat When On Face

Hydration is the operative word when putting together an eczema skin-care routine. We know that in eczema the skin barrier is not working the way it should be, so it is important to maintain skin hydration, says Dr. Zeichner.

Soothing is the other operative word. Look for products that are specifically made for sensitive skin, says Wu. These are usually free of fragrance and other ingredients known to aggravate eczema, including lanolin. Skip unscented products, which may contain a masked fragrance and could irritate your skin, and opt for a product labeled dye-free, notes the American Academy of Dermatology.

Also, avoid retinol, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy or salicylic acids, as these can aggravate eczema, advises Wu. The National Eczema Association, for example, says that while retinol is beneficial for anti-aging, it can trigger eczema flares. One beneficial ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture against your skin without being irritating. Past research shows that a hyaluronic acidceramide foam may help improve the symptoms of mild to moderate eczema.

Another note: You can wear makeup if you have eczema just do your best to look for products that are fragrance-free, adds Zeichner.

Many home remedies are suitable for babies and children, but always speak to a doctor before using them on kids of any age.

The following home remedies may help:

    Reducing Redness On The Face

To get remove redness on the face, its helpful to have a daily skin care routine. Every day, wash your face with a gentle cleanser or water, pat the skin dry on the areas that are inflamed to soothe them, and then use a water-based moisturizer such as a cream or lotion to lock in moisture and reduce redness. This can really help to reduce inflammation fast!

Looking into your facial soaps, cleansers, and make-up products can help to see if there are harsh ingredients such as sulfates, exfoliants, or fragrance that might be causing your skin to break out.

Eczema on the face is typically patches of red and inflamed skin. This makes facial dermatitis especially difficult for children and adults to deal with, as it can be quite obvious and apparent!

Inflammation can also worsen due to outdoor triggers such as poor air quality such as pollution, dust, and dry weather. Because the skin has very little protection, its important to remove potential irritants and triggers.

In my video I show you what routine I do these days to keep my face clear and protected.

  • Apply a cool compress to itchy skin. To use this technique, you:

  • Soak a clean towel or washcloth in cool water.
  • Wring the towel or washcloth until damp.
  • Apply the cool compress to the itchy skin.
  • After removing the compress, apply your childs moisturizer to the skin you just treated with the compress.
  • Telling your child to stop scratching itchy skin rarely works.

Eczema is just too itchy, and telling your child to stop scratching can feel stressful. Stress often makes eczema worse.

  • Add colloidal oatmeal to your childs bath. Youll find colloidal oatmeal at many places that sell health and beauty products. When you add this to your childs bath, it helps relieve the dry, itchy skin.

When using colloidal oatmeal, dermatologists recommend:

  • Add the colloidal oatmeal to the running lukewarm water.
  • Let your child soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • After the bath, gently dry your child, leaving enough water on the skin so that it feels damp.
  • Apply your childs moisturizer within 3 minutes of bathing.
  • Safety tips
    • Dont let your child eat the finely ground oatmeal.

    • Colloidal oatmeal makes the bath very slippery, so take care to prevent a slip or fall.

  • Soak in a bath and smear on ointment. After letting your child soak in a lukewarm bath, smear a thick layer of moisturizing ointment on all of your childs skin. When the skin is very itchy, using an eczema friendly ointment like petroleum jelly provides more relief than a cream or lotion.

  • Play peek-a-boo
  • Feed your child a snack

    Supplement With Vitamin D

In children and adolescents, studies have shown that those who suffer from eczema were more likely to have low levels of Vitamin D. In addition to increasing sun exposure, be sure to include vitamin D rich foods in your diet including sardines, eggs, and salmon.

We often recommend a high-quality vitamin D supplement to help boost your intake, especially during flares. Work with your provider for a personalized plan and dosage instructions.

    Eczema Around The Eye

When eczema occurs on the face, it often affects the skin around the eyes or eyelids . Eczema that develops near the eyes needs special attention because the eyes themselves can be affected.

Those with eczema around the eyes are more susceptible to certain eye problems such as conjunctivitis , inflamed cornea, and changes in the shape of the cornea .
