Here’s What You Should Value In A Brand:

Eczema on the face: 11 tips from a dermatologist| Dr Dray

We paid special attention to:

  • Presence of Active Ingredient Colloidal Oatmeal
  • Ingredients that provide a general moisturizing effect
  • Strength of Money-Back Guarantee
  • 24 Hour Customer Support
  • Strength of Money-Back Guarantee: A money-back guarantee shows the manufacturer is so confident in the product that theyre willing to put their money where their mouth is. Theres simply no reason to trust a product that doesnt offer a money-back-guarantee.

Dont get tricked! Many companies advertise a money-back guarantee ONLY IF the bottle is unopened and unused…We think this is pointless, and its why we offer a money back guarantee even if the product has been completely used.

Important: Rejuvica Thinks theres simply no reason to try a product that doesnt offer a money-back guarantee that allows you to open the product, try it for at least 30 days, and return it for a full refund if youre not satisfied.

24 Hour Customer Support: A 24-hour customer-support service shows a manufacturers commitment to its customers because 24-hour support is expensive. With any product, youre likely to have questions related to the product or your order and those questions can arise at any time of the day or night. Rejuvica doesn’t want to leave you feeling like you are on your own. 24-hour customer service gives our customers peace-of-mind knowing that the answers they need are only a phone call away.

    Eucerin Skin Calming Lotion

The dermatologist gave me this lotion in a sample size, and it was one of the only ones that didnt include parabens in the ingredient list. It works well to hydrate my skin and its what I layered over prescription cream in the beginning when my skin was completely out of control.

However, I do find it pretty heavy. It leaves me feeling mildly greasy and a little sticky.

Once my skin began healing, I started alternating between the Beekman 1802 Pure Goat Milk Body Cream, Crude Wash, and Soft Services Carea Cream.

This is technically a facial mist, which I discovered while researching the best facial mists.

However, its hero ingredient, hypochlorous acid, can help calm inflammation by triggering an immune boost. And because the mist has the National Eczema Associations Seal of Acceptance, I gave it a go. I spritzed it lightly on my irritated forearms just to see if it calmed the itch, and bingo.

Since Im lotioning up in the mornings and before bed, I use a light mist of this to dampen my skin before applying lotion. Its gentle and soothing, and honestly, the fine mist feels great.

    What Should You Avoid

Essentially, anything that’s harsh, irritating, or over-exfoliating is considered a foe when caring for eczema. Specifically, Wheeler and Hartman both suggest avoiding sulfates, alcohol, and fragrances in addition to at-home peels or pads and alcohol-based toners. Avoiding inflammatory food like sugar and dairy might also be strategic in minimizing the chance for flare-ups.

“Be careful with over-exfoliation, as that can lead to dryness, which can trigger eczema,” Wheeler adds. “Allergens in the environment can even cause an eczema flare as well as stress and hormones. I’ve also seen eczema worsen with certain eye makeup and makeup-removing products. I would avoid makeup wipes since most of them contain fragrance and alcohol and instead use a gentle makeup remover or micellar water to remove makeup. I also recommend avoiding hot water when washing your face and instead use cool water, as it’s less drying and less irritating.”

Ingredient-wise, Nakra suggests looking for soothing ingredients when choosing your skincare picks and suggests calming, natural choices like snow mushroom, turmeric, aloe, and witch hazel as non-irritating alternatives.

    Avene Xeracalm Ad Lipid

Dr. Chan recommends Avenes XeraCalm A.D. Lipid-Replenishing Balm as one of her favorite eczema creams. Why? It nourishes that itchy feeling, helps rebalance the skins microbiome and seals in moisture for up to 48 hours.

It helps calm dry, irritated and sensitive skin by helping to reduce itching, and alleviating redness and inflammation, Dr. Libby notes, too, as one of her favorite eczema creams.

What Ingredients To Avoid In Eczema Creams

TriDerma Eczema Fast Healing Face and Body Cream (2.2 oz)

Of course, there are ingredients youll want to avoid too, Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, tells SELF. Ingredients to watch out for include fragrances, exfoliating acids , harsh soaps, and retinol, she says: These can further irritate the skin by drying them out.

Dr. Nada Elbuluk, M.D., director of the Skin of Color Center and Pigmentary Program at USC, also notes to look at ingredients lists for anything you might be allergic to, because that will also cause a flare-up. I also recommend avoiding physical exfoliants and even certain fabrics such as wool, which can make eczema worse, she says.

So what are the absolute best eczema creams to hydrate, strengthen, and protect against flare-ups? We asked dermatologists to tell us what moisturizers they commonly recommend to their eczema patients. Heres what they suggest.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention

If your skin isnt responding to over-the-counter treatments, there are prescription topicals that your dermatologist can prescribe. Stronger prescription topical steroids are available for short-term use. Protopic 0.03% and 0.1% ointment and Elidel 1% cream are calcineurin inhibitors, meaning topical medications that work to inhibit the immune system to reduce inflammation and irritation. Dr. Lortscher typically uses Protopic ointment and Elidel cream to wean patients off topical steroids.

Recently, the FDA approved new treatment options including Eucrisa and Dupixent .

    • Eucrisa is a topical, non-steroid treatment. Eucrisa works differently than Protopic and Elidel, targeting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase that helps the body deal with inflammation.
    • Dupixent is an injection for individuals who have eczema resistant to topical treatments or who do not have access to topical treatment. Dupixent works by blocking factors that allow white blood cells to communicate inflammation.

Proper Skin Care For Eczema Focuses On Hydrating And Soothing While Minimizing Irritation

Hydration is the operative word when putting together an eczema skin-care routine. We know that in eczema the skin barrier is not working the way it should be, so it is important to maintain skin hydration, says Dr. Zeichner.

Soothing is the other operative word. Look for products that are specifically made for sensitive skin, says Wu. These are usually free of fragrance and other ingredients known to aggravate eczema, including lanolin. Skip unscented products, which may contain a masked fragrance and could irritate your skin, and opt for a product labeled dye-free, notes the American Academy of Dermatology.

Also, avoid retinol, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy or salicylic acids, as these can aggravate eczema, advises Wu. The National Eczema Association, for example, says that while retinol is beneficial for anti-aging, it can trigger eczema flares. One beneficial ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture against your skin without being irritating. Past research shows that a hyaluronic acidceramide foam may help improve the symptoms of mild to moderate eczema.

Another note: You can wear makeup if you have eczema just do your best to look for products that are fragrance-free, adds Zeichner.

How To Treat Eczema On Your Face

Its common and generally safe to treat body eczema with topical steroids, but you need to be careful applying the same products to your face, says Kenneth Mark, MD, a dermatologist practicing in New York City and Aspen, CO. Steroids can thin your skin if used improperly.

Thats why its important to start with more mild, moisturizing products, then go from there. The goal is to restore the barrier function of your skin without causing more irritation, Dr. Mark says.

    IN DEPTH: ECZEMA

One extra challenge when treating facial eczema: You probably use a lot of products on your face that you dont use on your body, and some of those products arent the best choice when tackling a flare-up. Avoid any potentially irritating products that can increase inflammation, Dr. Mark says.

We love reducing wrinkles, dark spots, and saggy skin just as much as anyone else, but eliminating facial eczema should be your number one priority. Eczema is a medical condition that can turn into an infection if untreated, Dr. Peredo says.

Ready for your super approachable treatment plan? Keep your routine simple and hold off on makeup during a flare-upno eye shadow if you have eczema around your eyes or lip stains if its on your lips. After taking a lukewarm shower , apply a fragrance-free moisturizer as soon as you dry off when your skin will absorb it better, Dr. Peredo says.

Eczema: 3 Best Products From The Ordinary For Atopic Dermatitis & Eczema ma Prone Skin

In order to provide a noticeably better quality of life, it is important to consider a persons situation and being as a whole just as carefully as we consider the skin.

The skin protects our inner self, allowing us to physically experience the outside world without external influences affecting us too deeply. For those with dry skin and atopic dermatitis, however, this barrier function is weakened. External influences get under the skin more easily, while a lack of lipids and proteins results in increased loss of moisture from within through the epidermis. This leaves the skin dried out, brittle and rough. Medical skin care can strengthen the skins protective barrier and promote its own, innate regulatory abilities, explains holistic dermatologist Dr. Sabine Neff.

    Identify And Avoid Potential Triggers

A person can take steps to improve eczema by avoiding substances that may irritate the skin, such as soap, essential oils, and scented products.

While sun exposure can decrease inflammation in the skin and improve eczema, the heat and sweat from sun exposure can trigger a flare.

Other potential triggers for eczema symptoms include:

What Products Should I Avoid If I Have Eczema

Dermal Therapy Face & Eyelid Eczema Cream 40g

You should avoid any ingredients that you have a known allergy to and anything that has irritated your skin previously, Dr. Chan said. Common products that can do this are acne products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I also would avoid high percentage AHAs.

Be sure to note that developing a skin allergy is higher when you have atopic dermatitis, so avoiding fragrance when you can is a good idea, especially during an active flare.

    Skin Care For Facial Eczema

Moisturize. The best way to keep your skin from drying out is with thick creams and ointments , not with thinner lotions. The best time to do this is right after you wash your face. If ointments are too greasy for your face, try using them only at night.

Clean gently. Soap can irritate your skin, but washing with water alone may not be enough, especially if your face is oily. Use a gentle non-soap cleanser or a medical emollient instead. Pat dry with a soft towel.

Watch the temperature. Use only cool — not hot — water on your face, and for as little time as possible.

Skip makeup.Donât use cosmetics on irritated skin.

    Gentle Soaps And Detergents

Laundry detergent can contain harsh chemicals that aggravate eczema.

Many body washes and cleansers contain detergents, which help provide a soapy lather. Detergents and other lathering agents can dry out the skin, especially in people with eczema.

Bar soaps can also be harsh on the skin because of their alkalinity.

Try using a gentle, no-lather, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid products with rough particles for scrubbing or exfoliating, as these can further irritate the skin.

Many people with eczema also find that switching to a more gentle, fragrance- or color-free laundry detergent can help improve symptoms.

Try skipping fabric softener, which lingers on clothes and often contains fragrances and chemicals that can cause skin irritation.

Sitting next to a fireplace or near a furnace may feel good, but it can make eczema symptoms worse. The hot, dry air can dehydrate the skin and aggravate the itchiness of eczema.

Use a humidifier during the dry winter months and avoid getting too close to heaters and fireplaces.

How Can You Treat Eczema On The Face

First things first, if a trigger for your eczema can be identified, it should be eliminated. Not sure where to start? Tanuj Nakra, a cosmetic surgeon, cites common triggers as foods , fabrics , or skin irritants .

“Unfortunately, some triggers are hard to treat because they are tied to your genetics or where you live. For instance, northern latitudes are a trigger,” Nakra explains. “Secondly, the itching symptoms of eczema should be treated to avoid worsening the inflammation.” He says non-aggressive steroids such as hydrocortisone 1% cream is a good place to start in order to calm irritation, and depending on your results, you can seek further treatment options with your doctor. Of course, choosing gentle, non-inflammatory skincare is key if you’re looking to reduce the chances of a flare-up. Oh, and Bae also recommends investing in an at-home humidifier.

    Over The Counter Topical Creams

Most topical creams for eczema are steroids, specifically corticosteroids, but there are also non-steroidal creams. Eczema creams help reduce itching and inflammation. Topical creams are used for temporary relief of symptoms, not a long-term treatment, and are applied directly to the skin.

One of the most common over-the-counter topical steroids is called hydrocortisone, a mild steroid, and the creams sold in stores have particularly low doses of it. Even so, hydrocortisone cream can provide mild relief from itching and inflammation and can be helpful in your daily life. A doctor might prescribe something stronger if needed.
