Heres what he had to say regarding the Air Forces asthma policy:
With the Air Force, asthma is disqualifying if the service person carries an inhaler.
If they had childhood asthma but currently do not carry an inhaler it is possible to join the Air Force.
Before joining the Air Force, the potential candidate would take a Pulmonary Function Test .
Keep in mind though that, in the Air Force, there would be specific jobs where asthma would be an issue.
We will update the Air Force asthma policy every 6 months to keep this content current and notify you of any changes.
Eczema In The Armed Forces
Imagine wearing heavy body armor in a humid, insect-filled jungle environment or living in the heat, dust and debris of a desert war zone.
If you have eczema, you may already be thinking about the flares those conditions could cause. For these reasons and others, the U.S. Armed Forces has medical standards surrounding military service and eczema.
Specifically, having atopic dermatitis after age 12 is disqualifying. So is having recurrent contact dermatitis or dyshidrotic eczema within two years of military candidacy that needed treatment with more than a topical steroid.
Various military branches also have restrictions within these overall standards. The Army and Navy, for example, list 9 years old as the oldest age allowable for having had AD.
There are two primary reasons for the standard, said dermatologist and U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Emily B. Wong, MD, who is dermatology consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General and is stationed at Joint Base San Antonio- Lackland, Texas.
First, its important to protect the military members health. Many of our deployment conditions, such as environment extremes, wearing of military gear, mental and physical stress, and lack of access to specialized medical care and creams or medications, can cause significant flares and poor disease control, Wong said.
General And Miscellaneous Conditions And Defects
The following conditions may disqualify you for military service:
a. Allergic manifestations. A reliable history of anaphylaxis to stinging insects. Reliable history of a moderate to severe reaction to common foods, spices or food additives.
b. Any acute pathological condition, including acute communicable diseases, until recovery has occurred without sequelae.
c. Chronic metallic poisoning with lead, arsenic or silver, or beryllium or manganese.
d. Cold injury, residuals of, such as: frostbite, chilblain, immersion foot, trench foot, deep-seated ache, paresthesia, hyperhidrosis, easily traumatized skin, cyanosis, amputation of any digit or ankylosis.
e. Cold urticaria and angioedema, hereditary angioedema.
f. Filariasis, trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, uncinariasis or other parasitic conditions, if symptomatic or carrier states.
g. Heat pyrexia, heatstroke or sunstroke. Documented evidence of a predisposition , recurrent episodes requiring medical attention or residual injury malignant hyperthermia.
h. Industrial solvent and other chemical intoxication.
i. Motion sickness. An authenticated history of frequent incapacitating motion sickness after the 12th birthday.
j. Mycotic infection of internal organs.
k. Organ transplant recipient.
l. Presence of human immunodeficiency virus or antibody. Presence is confirmed by repeatedly reactive enzyme-linked immunoassay serological test and positive immunoelectrophoresis test, or other DOD-approved confirmatory test.

I Used To Take Drugs Can I Still Join
If you have a history of drug dependence, you will need to provide evidence that you have abstained from the use of these drugs for at least the last 3 years prior to joining the Army.A history of occasional use of recreational drugs won’t stop you from joining, but you must stop using any such drugs before you join.
After joining the Army, you must not use recreational drugs. The Army carries out random, compulsory drugs testing, and you can expect to be tested while you’re in training. If you fail any of the tests, you’re very likely be discharged.

Occupational Dermatoses In The Military
There was a study done looking at the occupational skin diseases in national servicemen and military personnel in Singapore from 1989 to 1999. A total of 1059 patients were diagnosed to have occupational skin diseases at NSC, out of which 77 were national servicemen and regulars. Personnel included 44 from the Army , 16 from Air Force , 7 from Navy , 6 from Civil Defense and 4 from Police Force . The most common vocations associated with occupational skin diseases were vehicle repairs/maintenance and food handling .
Irritant contact dermatitis accounted for 61 cases, allergic contact dermatitis 10 cases and contact urticaria 4 cases. The most common irritants were oil/grease , wet work and solvents . Other irritants found included acids/alkalis , cement , coolant , uniform dye, fiber glass , food , friction, pesticide and resin .
The most common allergens were food and chromate in cement . One Army cook was patch tested positive to garlic, and 3 other cooks had positive prick tests to prawns, chicken, fish, squid and salted vegetables. Other allergens observed included nickel , epoxy , grease and kerosene. In conclusion, irritant contact dermatitis was found to be much more common than allergic contact dermatitis and contact urticaria in military personnel, outnumbering by 4.4:1.

All the disqualifying diseases, disorders, and conditions adopted by the U.S. military are listed within the International Classification of Disease code, under the United Nations World Health Organization.
Task & Purpose reached out to Lt. Michele Stein, a Navy recruiter, who shared some lesser-known medical conditions, and in some cases, ways you can get around them. In addition, Stein also asked around her station in Tucson, Arizona, for crazy, surprising medical disqualification stories. However, the Coast Guard is starting to apply more waivers to anxiety and depression than in the past.
