Patients approach pharmacists with a host of questionsabout relatively minor health conditions, and many involve the skin.Dermatologic questions concern allergic dermatitis, dry skin, minorwounds, and numerous other problems.1 Dandruff and seborrheicdermatitis are two closely related dermatologic conditions thatmay be successfully self-treated. However, the pharmacist should beaware of the various means by which both are recognized and the possibleinterventions.

Types Of Eczema Commonly Found In Older Adults

There are many different types of eczema so its important to know your type so that you can avoid the triggers and heal the skin. Here are the most common types of eczema in older adults:

Asteatotic Eczema

Common in adults over the age of 60, this type of eczema appears as fissures or grooves that are pink and red, affecting the superficial layers of skin. Its usually found on the legs but can be found on the upper arms, thighs and lower back. Other symptoms include soreness and itchiness.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is temporary and occurs when your skin is exposed to an irritant such as chemicals in a cleaning product or laundry detergent.

Venous Eczema

Venous Eczema mostly shows up on the lower legs in the form of itchy, red and scaly patches. Older adults who have a high body mass index or a family history of varicose veins are most susceptible.

Nummular Eczema

Nummular eczema is characterized by coin-shaped scores on the skin. These sores may be open and are very itchy. The lesions may also be dry or weeping.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic eczema tends to appear on areas of the body where there are a lot of oil-producing glands . It appears as red, greasy or swollen skin with white or yellow crusty flakes. While people of any age can develop seborrheic dermatitis, people with certain diseases such as Parkinsons Disease are believed to be at an increased risk.

Treatment Of Severe Seborrhea

An occasional patient with severe seborrhea that is unresponsive to the usual topical therapy may be a candidate for isotretinoin therapy.14 Isotretinoin can induce up to a 90 percent reduction in sebaceous gland size, with a corresponding reduction in the production of sebum. Isotretinoin also has anti-inflammatory properties. Treatment with daily doses of isotretinoin as low as 0.1 to 0.3 mg per kg may result in improvement in severe seborrhea after four weeks of therapy. Thereafter, a dose as low as 5 to 10 mg per day may be effective as maintenance therapy over several years. However, isotretinoin has potentially serious side effects and few patients with seborrhea are appropriate candidates for therapy. The most devastating side effect is teratogenicity, but other serious side effects include hyperlipidemia, neutropenia, anemia and hepatitis. Mucocutaneous adverse effects include cheilitis, xerosis, conjunctivitis, urethritis and hair loss. Long-term use has been associated with the development of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis . This agent must be used cautiously and only by physicians who are well versed in all of its adverse effects.

Does Head And Shoulders Have Phthalates And/or Parabens

Buy Head and Shoulders 2in1 Classic Clean 450ml

It depends on the specific shampoo. Many shampoos offered by Head and Shoulders do not list phthalates and parabens as part of their compositions. Quite a few are clearly labeled paraben-free. Parabens are anti-bacterial and anti-mold preservatives.

Some shampoos use a paraben substitute i.e. Phenoxyethanol.

But in the case of phthalates, only the Head & Shoulders Supreme products are clearly labeled phthalate free.

For the other shampoos, it can be assumed that phthalates are present unless clearly labeled otherwise.

The other shampoos might also be free of parabens if labeled so, but the presence of phthalates remains unknown. Phthalates are used either as plasticizers or gelling agents i.e. to make the shampoo spread better.

Just to be 100% sure, you can re-check the label to make sure there is a paraben-free label on your preferred H& S product.

Types Of Eczema That Affect The Scalp

Seborrhoeic eczema is one of the most common types of eczema seen on the scalp and hairline. It can affect babies , children and adults. The skin appears red and scaly and there is often dandruff as well, which can vary in severity. There may also be a rash on other parts of the face, such as around the eyebrows, eyelids and sides of the nose. Seborrhoeic eczema can become infected. See the National Eczema Society factsheets on Adult seborrhoeic dermatitis and Infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis and cradle cap for more details.

Atopic eczema is another common type of eczema that can affect the scalp at all ages. The skin is red, dry and itchy and can easily become infected, especially if scratched and when there is broken skin.

Allergic contact dermatitis can develop as a result of your body reacting to a particular substance to which you are allergic. Everyday items that can cause allergic contact dermatitis on the scalp include the following:

  • Hair shampoos, conditioners, gels, sprays and other hair products
  • Hair dyes, perm solutions

See the National Eczema Society booklet on Contact dermatitis for more details.

Irritant contact dermatitis is a type of eczema that occurs when the skins surface is irritated by a substance that causes the skin to become dry, red and itchy. For example, shampoos, mousses, hair gels, hair spray, perm solution and fragrance can all cause irritant contact dermatitis. See the National Eczema Society booklet on Contact dermatitis for more details.

I First Started Getting Psoriasis Around The Age Of 26

It was when I worked at a steakhouse as a cook. I was eating a lot of beef and white bread because it was free. Somebody would mess up a steak or burger at least twice a day, and boom, I had a free meal. I ate beef and white bread almost everyday for two years. Not a good choice.

Red spots starts showing up around my eyelashes and above my lip. Then they started flaking and getting gross, then it started in my hair, little crusty bumps. I didnt know what to do, I didnt have health care, so I couldnt go to the doctor. And it wasnt that bad.

During the next summer I played a lot of basketball outside with no shirt on and it went away. Getting a tan apparently makes psoriasis disappear. But I was also thinking, oh it goes away in the summer, who cares.

I went back to college and started drinking black coffee twice a morning and feeling stressed out. I think the black coffee and stress made the psoriasis return. During that winter it got really bad. The red dots became huge and dry, it felt like my skin was made of rocks. I kept putting lotions on it recommended by some of my female friends, all of which contained alcohol and fragrance, which actually made it worse. When I would reach up to grab things, the dots would crack and bleed.

I was really scared to eat differently like actually scared. How could I ever live without disgusting food and Pepsi on a daily basis?

    Treatment Of The Body

Seborrhea of the trunk may be treated with frequent application of zinc or coal tar containing shampoos or by washing with zinc soaps. Additionally, topical ketoconazole cream, 2 percent, and/or a topical corticosteroid cream, lotion or solution applied once or twice daily will prove useful. Benzoyl peroxide washes are also helpful in controlling seborrhea of the trunk. Patients should be cautioned to rinse thoroughly after application of these agents as they will bleach clothing and bed linens. These agents may be drying, and the patient may benefit from application of a moisturizer after treatment.

    Dermatitis Or Eczema Prevention

Most forms of dermatitis and eczema are chronic conditions. One exception is contact dermatitis. It can be prevented by finding and avoiding the irritant that caused the skin condition.

Its important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis, then try to avoid triggers for your type of eczema or dermatitis .

Other forms of dermatitis can usually be avoided or managed with proper self-care, which includes the following:

    • Avoid long showers or baths, which can dry out the skin.
    • Use moisturizers like oils, lotions, or creams.
    • Avoid irritants that make your skin more susceptible to breakouts, like scented products.
    • Dont scrub your skin too hard.
    • Use topical steroids to help with itching.
    • Keep your fingernails short if you have a habit of scratching.
    • Avoid stressful situations that may cause a flare-up.

Establishing a skincare routine can help you manage your atopic dermatitis or eczema symptoms. A doctor can help you come up with a regimen that works for you. You should also take note of things that may have caused your breakouts.

  • What Causes Scalp Eczema

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by the overproduction of sebum, the natural oils secreted by sebaceous glands in the scalp. It is not contagious.

Because seborrheic dermatitis is a condition related to the sebaceous glands, it can also appear in other oily areas of the skin, including the face , ears, upper chest, upper back, armpits, and genitals.

There is a strong association between seborrheic dermatitis and yeast of the genus Malassezia, which are normally present in the skin but often overgrown in people with the skin condition.

Scientists dont fully understand the exact connection between the yeast and eczema symptoms, but research suggests that a nonspecific immune reaction may be to blame. That is, some interaction between Malassezia, their metabolites , and skin and immune cells results in an inflammatory reaction.

Importantly, once someone becomes sensitized to Malassezia, the yeast will always cause an immune reaction.
