In an effort to further soothe his skin, we settled on a castile baby soap. Unlike many soaps made from petrochemicals or surfactants, this fragrance-free castile soap is made with coconut and olive oil for intense moisturizing properties. The product is not tear-free but it is so gentle on his skin and our little one has never seemed to mind. Dr. Bronners products are certified organic.

Make Sure To Moisturize After Washing

All of the above soaps are great choices for those with eczema. But even if you use these exceptionally gentle soaps, you should remember to moisturize your skin as much as you can after taking a bath or shower.

The fact is that people with eczema usually have extremely dry skin. Many of the rashes eczema produces can lead to wounds or raw skin, which makes skin dryness an even greater problem. Even gentle soap can strip away some moisture from the topmost layers of your skin, which may lead to irritation or an outbreak if that hydration isnt replaced.

A great moisturizer can seal in existing water and prevent any remaining water from evaporating. Wed always recommend using a moisturizer after taking a shower and scrubbing your skin, especially on your face if thats where you get your worst eczema rashes.

Green Goos Dry Skin Salve works wonders as a whole-body moisturizer, and is specially formulated with eczema and other dry skin conditions in mind.

Dr Bronner’s Has Jewish

While Dr. Bronner’s was founded in 1948, the birth of the brand goes back even further: to the early 1900s, where Emanuel Bronner lived in southern Germany as a third-generation soapmaker. According to an episode of podcast “WTF with Marc Maron,” thanks to an intergenerational fight with his father and uncles, Bronner left Germany for the U.S. and escaped before the Nazis seized power. Sadly, his family wasn’t spared the same fate, and the original company was lost to the Nazis, who stole the brand and Aryanized it.

After, both of Bronner’s parents were murdered in concentration camps, and he sought out a platform to spread his spiritual message. Enter: the labels of his eponymous soap brand. Bronner was heavily inspired by Judaism and believed that, in the wake of the Holocaust and in the shadow of nuclear war, it was his life’s mission to spread a positive message and unite the world. The labels of his soaps ultimately allowed him that platform.

Prevention: What Can You Do

Identifying the cause of your eczema is important to both resolving and preventing the condition. Whether your own eczema is triggered by internal factors such as food allergies, reduced stomach acid, or stress or external factors such as body products, heat, laundry detergents, household cleaning products, or fibrous materials like wool, eliminating the stimulus is the key to resolving your eczema.

My approach focuses on reducing inflammation through lifestyle, nutrition, natural topical treatments, and supplements. All of these work in conjunction with each other to help your body heal on the inside while calming the skin on the outside. This method results in less frequent and milder eruptions, while simultaneously supporting the body in healing the root cause of the condition.

Tips For Eczema And Sensitive Skin

The HENG Family Travel & Lifestyle Blog: Dr. Bronner Pure

Note: this post focuses on atopic dermatitis, a common form of eczema. However, if like many people right now you are washing your hands a lot more frequently than usual, then you may be experiencing very dry skin and developing eczema-like symptoms such as cracked and blistered skin. Many of the tips covered in this post may help with those symptoms as well.

Disclaimer: This post is intended to provide information about how to use Dr. Bronners products, but is not medical advice, or a substitute for medical care or advice provided by a physician or licensed medical provider.

First, some clarification of terms. Eczema refers to a spectrum of skin disorders, but the kind of eczema this post will be focusing on is atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis usually begins in infancy or childhood. It often clears up with age, though for too many sufferers it continues into adulthood. As with many skin issues, the underlying causes are not well understood. Some recent research has pointed to genetic factors that may impair the functioning of the skin barrier and allow more allergens and pathogens to penetrate the bodythis in turn can lead to an overactive immune response and inflammation. At the same time, the lack of an effective skin barrier means the skin cannot as easily retain moisture, which can lead to drier skin that exacerbates the inflammation.

There are two main strategies to combat dry skin and eczema that will be detailed below:

1. Using a moisturizing soap

What Is Castile Soap And Why Is It The Best Natural Soap For Eczema

Castile soap got its name from the Castile region in Spain, where it originated. It is the best natural soap for eczema, as it is

  • totally non-toxic,
  • made purely from plant oils, and
  • one of the most biodegradable soaps around.

The original version of Castile soap was made with mainly olive oil. Now, it can be made from other vegetable oils too, like coconut, hemp, avocado, walnut, almond, etc. That is why Dr Bronners Castile soap is the best soap for eczema, as it gets its cleansing and nourishing properties from the plant oils.

At the same time, it binds well with dirt and grease to perform its cleaning job around the house too, and not just on us. Dr Bronners Castile soap is advertised as having 18 uses! More on that later lets first have a look at how pure the ingredients are.

Ingredients In Dr Bronners Soaps

For the tea tree scented liquid Castile soap which I have in my hand as I am writing this, these are the ingredients:

Water, organic coconut oil, potassium hydroxide , organic palm kernel oil, organic olive oil, tea tree extract, organic jojoba oil, citric acid, tocopherol .

So you can see, it is made of all natural oils, no chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers, sodium lauryl sulfate , etc.

The same goes for the bar soap, the same ingredients as the liquid soap, except sodium hydroxide in place of potassium hydroxide, to make this hard bar of soap, and none of it remains too, after saponifying the oils into soap and glycerin.

One in 10 people will experience eczema at some point in their life. Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a condition caused by a defect in the barrier of the skin in combination with inflammation in the skin,” explains Charlotte Birnbaum, MD, FAAD, at Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. “Because the barrier is defective in eczema, the skin is more sensitive to allergens and irritants. That’s where soaps for eczema come in.

An alarming idea, I know. Seborrheic dermatitis is also the adult version of cradle cap and can potentially be managed like a candida overgrowth within. There are simply certain similarities that you can learn from killing a fungus, which can directly assist your scalp overgrowth issue.

Finding The Right Soap

Finding the right soap for a persons skin can be tricky. Every persons skin is different, which means it will respond differently to certain products. Therefore, what works for one individual with eczema may not work for someone else.

Additionally, eczema can change over time, which may mean that certain products become less effective.

A person with this skin condition may wish to contact a dermatologist for cleanser recommendations. After evaluating an individuals skin type and eczema, they can decide which products are best suited to them.

People can also try products with NEA endorsement. It may be helpful to test different products systematically and figure out the ones that work best.

They can do this by performing a patch test at home.

To complete a patch test, a person applies a small amount of the soap to their wrist, cleans and dries the area, then covers it with a wrap or bandage. They should not wash the area for 48 hours but monitor it for signs of an allergic reaction, such as redness, itchiness, or rash.

If a reaction occurs, the individual should remove the bandage and wash the area thoroughly.

They can also use an over-the-counter cream that contains hydrocortisone or a soothing lotion such as calamine lotion. An OTC antihistamine may also reduce itchiness.

If there is no reaction, the product is likely safe for a persons skin.

It All Started On A Soapbox Literally

Before he turned to his soap labels, Emanuel Bronner first turned to a literal soapbox to preach his beliefs in equality. According to Hatch Mag, Bronner lectured passersby on his Moral ABCs, which still appear on his labels today. These tenets all shared common themes, “that we are all one from the same god, and should work hard and give back to the earth.” At the end of each lecture, Bronner closed with his final sentiment, which is also still on his labels: “We are All-one or none!”

Bronner’s first lectures took place on the steps of the University of Chicago, and he was motivated by his mission to end the threats of nuclear holocaust something he feared was impending due to ethnic barriers. Then, in 1948, Bronner started his company in Los Angeles and gave away samples as he lectured in Pershing Square, “a hotbed for activism at the time.” When Bronner realized that people were taking the free samples but not staying for the lectures, he began printing his Moral ABCs directly on the label.

I dont know about you, but after a hard sweat session or some garden chores in the summer heat, I relish a good scrub in the shower. Clean, scrubbed skin feels so much better than the slimy sensation of sweat mixed with sunscreen, right?

A new book, Beyond Soap, by dermatologist Sandy Skotnicki is forcing me to rethink some of my assumptions about personal cleanliness. Skotnicki, who specializes in skin irritation, argues that our cultures obsession with hygiene is destroying our skins ability to do its job. She explains that by scrubbing and soaping up daily or even more than once a day, as she sees with many of her patients were inadvertently damaging the important outer layer of our bodys largest organ.

I noticed over the years a growing number of people coming into my office with reactions to things and not knowing what to do, Skotnicki said during our recent interview. I got frustrated that patients dont have the right information. This book tries to cut through the misconceptions.
