What Is The Soak And Seal Method

Shower Routine for sensitive skin, eczema, or dry skin

The soak and seal method involves getting your skin wet via a bath or shower followed by sealing the water in with a moisturizer, explains Wulkan. Explaining this to patients allows them to understand that showering and bathing can actually hurt the skin unless you moisturize and seal in the water, he says. For the record, the NEA, too, recommends this post-bathing approach for people with eczema.

Ready to give your bathing routine an overhaul, and try the soak and seal method? Heres a guide to getting your shower time right.

Tips For Showering With Eczema

  • Keep showers short
  • Never let water spray directly where you have eczema
  • Face, neck, hands, and inside of arms are at most risk from loosing natural oils
  • To wash your face, cup your hands to collect water and splash against your face
  • Pad yourself dry with a towel
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after drying

Lotions Creams And Ointments

There are three types of moisturizers: lotions, creams, and ointments. Theyâre classified by the amount of oil and water in them. The more oil they contain, the better they are for eczema.

Ointments have the most oil. Theyâre usually the best choice to treat eczema. They won’t burn when you apply them to your skin. They help it hold on to moisture.

Some people like to use them overnight. This gives your skin time to absorb them fully. Petroleum jelly and mineral oil are examples.

Creams are a good choice if you don’t like the greasy feel of an ointment. They have the second highest amount of oil. They can also seal in moisture.

Be sure to read labels carefully. Creams often contain additives that can irritate your skin or cause allergic reactions in some people.

Lotions are mostly made of water and have the lowest amount of oil. They don’t usually work well for people with eczema. They evaporate quickly and may have ingredients that bother your skin.

How Often Should You Shower When Managing Eczema

Your skin may be more prone to eczema flare-ups when it isnt clean, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Thus, the hospital recommends showering daily to get off all the days dirt and grime.

Still, there are some differing philosophies on the topic, says Wulkan. I agree with both the American Academy of Dermatology as well as the National Eczema Association, who feel that showering or bathing once daily is a good idea, says Wulkan. The critical part is the time, water temperature, products used and post-treatment moisturization, he adds.

Indeed, an article published in July 2016 in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology found that bathing daily is effective for soothing the dry skin that can come along with eczema, as long as you do the soak and seal method.

Retinoids are applied at night. This included retinol or prescription tretinoin, the two best retinoids for countering aging skin. Retinol is less irritating and I use it more often than tretinoin. I apply Retinol Intensive Night Cream and top it with either Glycolic Acid 15% Face Cream or Daily Face Creamboosted with Omega Enriched Face Oil.

Both of these products are fragrance free and hypoallergenic. Retinol is easier to tolerate because glycolic acid products need to have acid pH and over 10% concentration to work and this can make them irritating to barrier compromised complexions like those struggling with eczema. Also, Retinol Night Cream includes the high concentration green tea antioxidants so I don’t need to apply my Green Tea Antioxidant Therapy at night when I use the Retinol .

Why Washing Up Is Important When Managing Eczema

The benefits of bathing are twofold for people with eczema.

For one, bathing then moisturizing directly afterward can quench dry skin, according to the National Eczema Association .

Secondly, water gets rid of bacteria and allergens that might otherwise linger on your skin, causing eczema flare-ups, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Getting water on the skin is an important aspect of eczema skin health, says Dr. Wulkan.

How To Apply The Moisturizer

The way you apply the moisturizer is important the best time to apply the moisturizer is after taking a bath. This will lock in the moisture and keep the skin hydrated.

Apply the creams or lotions generously, allowing the skin to absorb the cream. Apply the cream several times per day, especially in the areas where the skin is dry and flaky. Use more moisturizer during the winter, as the dry weather will affect the skin.

The type of soap you use is also important, as an unsuitable soap can dry the skin. Opt for a moisturizing soap such as Dove or Oil of Olay. The bath or shower water shouldnt be hot warm or lukewarm is preferable. Dont scratch or rub the irritated skin.

The Best Eczema Products to Relieve Itch

People with eczema know that a good moisturizer is an essential part of their skin care regimen. Due to a gene variation that can prevent skin from retaining moisture, skin affected by eczema is prone to dryness, itchy rashes, and infections. Medications such as topical steroids are sometimes prescribed by dermatologists to stop inflammation. Many people also rely on over-the-counter moisturizers also known as emollients that can be bought without a prescription. Moisturizers can take various forms:

  • Lotions can include oil, water, or alcohol, and need shaking when they separate into parts.
  • Creams are thicker than lotions and often have preservatives.
  • Ointments are semisolid and have a high level of oil. They generally do not contain preservatives and are usually free of allergens.
  • Gels can be water- or alcohol-based and liquify with skin contact. They often have preservatives and fragrances.

Finding the right moisturizer for dryness and itchy skin can be frustrating. As one member of MyEczemaTeam wrote, I constantly have to change moisturizers. I’ll find something that’ll work for a few months then my skin goes through changes. My moisturizer is no longer effective, and I have to find a new one.

Tips For Bathing And Moisturizing With Eczema

Some things to remember when bathing:

  • Take at least one bath or shower a day
  • Bathe or shower in lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Avoid scrubbing your skin with a washcloth or loofah
  • Use a gentle cleanser
  • During severe flares, limit the use of cleansers to further avoid irritation

Some things to remember when moisturizing:

  • Use a high-oil content moisturizer twice a day to improve hydration and protect the skin barrier
  • Moisturize hands every time you wash them or they come into contact with water
  • Schedule your bathing and moisturizing routine at night, just before bed. This can help your skin better retain its moisture
  • If you have eczema on your hands, soak your hands in water, then follow with an application of your prescription medication and moisturizer. Wear cotton gloves over your hands while you sleep to help lock in the moisturizer

How To Choose The Right Moisturizer For Me

You would have realized by now that everyones eczema is unique to them and as a result, the best moisturizer for someone else may not be the best for you. The most suitable moisturizer for you will also change based on the severity of your eczema increasing or decreasing.

When shopping for a new moisturizer always check to see if there are any ingredients that are likely to cause irritation. Also, prefer those which have been approved by a recognized eczema association as they will be recommending this product based on their own tests.

Finally, with any new moisturizer, apply a small amount to your skin then leave for 24-48 hours. If, after this time the skin is inflamed then thats a good sign this is one moisturizer you should avoid. Remember to make a note of the ingredients as this will give you an idea of the potential chemicals which you may be allergic to and wish to avoid in the future.

Why Are Baths And Moisturizer So Important When Treating Eczema

I think bathing is a very important when someone has eczema. Its is a wonderful opportunity for a young child to bond with parents. Its also a way to get dead skin cells and bacteria off the skin.

And, very importantly bathing is a way to hydrate the skin. Because people who have eczema have very poor outer skin function, their skin can have trouble retaining the water. In fact, children and adults with eczema can actually get drier from a bath unless a moisturizer is applied immediately after the bath.

Applying moisturizer after a bath is absolutely key because it provides an artificial barrier that can help prevent water loss and also keep out agents bacteria, viruses, and irritants that we dont want to get into the skin.

After a bath, moisturizer should be applied very quickly. Before applying the moisturizer, we like to gently pat the skin but leave the skin feeling damp so that were not totally stripping off the moisture that we get from the water.

Next, we like to apply a moisturizer that is ideally a cream or an ointment. These contain more oil than water as opposed to a lotion, which has more water than oil. When you use more oil than water, you do a better job of sealing in the moisture.

Many parents ask how long a bath should be. We dont have any good scientific evidence that longer or shorter baths are important. What we do know is that the bath can dry if children stay too long in it, so we generally limit a bath to 5 or 10 minutes.

Dehydrated skin will lead to skin becoming rough, itchy, sore and can even cause skin infections. There are many factors which could cause dry skin. Among these are harsh soaps, cold temperatures, low humidity, wind and even too much sun exposure. People suffering from eczema have a damaged skin barrier.

This makes them more prone to dry, rough, itchy skin which is more sensitive to allergens and bacteria that can cause irritation thus leading to more flare-ups.

A good moisturizer will help the skin barrier in two ways: first by hydrating the dry skin and secondly by forming a layer of protection over it to stop the skin losing moisture and becoming dry. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for us to regularly moisturize our skin throughout the day.

Soothe eczema-prone skin with our edit of the best bath and shower products for irritated skin

Bath time should ideally be a blissful chillout window in an otherwise hectic day. Luxuriating in bubbles, pouring wine, floating your worries away…that kind of vibe. Except, if you suffer with eczema, in which case, baths and showers can present more stress than serenity, with everything from alcohol to fragrance to foaming agents in common bath and shower products aggravating and drying out eczema-prone skin, leaving it sore, flaky and itchy. “The combination of water and soap or shower gel can lead to moisture loss from the surface of the skin and disruption of the skins barrier resulting in dryness or irritation,” warns dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto.

Given that a daily wash is non-negotiable for most of us, finding a body cleanser thats gentle on eczema skin and ideally not too expensive is essential.

“When skin is dry and eczema-prone, it’s important that you opt for gentle formulas which are devoid of any fragrance or soap,” advises dermatologist and eczema expert Dr Ophelia Veraitch, of the Cranley Clinic in London. “The skin is in need of soothing and hydrating ingredients such as ceramides. Hypoallergenic formulations and perfume-free products that specifically target sensitive skin are a good choice.”
