How Can Parents Help

HOW TO TREAT BABY ECZEMA | Aveeno Products, Eczema Triggers & Oatmeal Baths For Baby Eczema

Help prevent or treat eczema by keeping your child’s skin from getting dry or itchy and avoiding triggers that cause flare-ups. Try these suggestions:

  • Kids should take short baths or showers in warm water. Use mild unscented soaps or non-soap cleansers and pat the skin dry before putting on cream or ointment. Teens should use unscented makeup and oil-free facial moisturizers.
  • Ask your doctor if it’s OK to use oatmeal soaking products in the bath to help control itching.
  • Kids should wear soft clothes that “breathe,” such as those made from cotton. Wool or polyester may be too harsh or irritating.
  • Keep your child’s fingernails short to prevent skin damage from scratching. Try having your child wear comfortable, light gloves to bed if scratching at night is a problem.
  • Kids should avoid becoming overheated, which can lead to flare-ups.
  • Kids should drink plenty of water, which adds moisture to the skin.
  • Get rid of known allergens in your household and help your child avoid others, like pollen, mold, and tobacco smoke.
  • Stress can make eczema worse. Help your child find ways to deal with stress .

Add A Protective Barrier

Slather an extra layer of petroleum jelly on your babys cheeks and nose before heading out for a wintery walk to prevent chapping and irritation from dry winter air. If your baby gets an eczema flare around her mouth, apply petroleum jelly or another thick barrier cream to the area before meals and snacks, advises Michele Ramien, a dermatologist at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. Kids with eczema have the genetics to develop allergies, and one of the main ways they become allergic is through exposure on broken or damaged skin, she explains. The barrier will also prevent acidic foods such as strawberries and tomato sauce from irritating the skin when they inevitably get all over your little ones face.

What Foods Are Good For Curing Eczema

Hippocrates said, Let food be thy medicine. What great words to live by! Indeed, there are certain foods that help soothe and lessen the symptoms of eczema. Once your baby has been introduced to solid food, consider adding anti-inflammatory foods into his/her diet to reduce eczema symptoms.

Try adding more of these foods into your babys diet:

Note: If mama is exclusively breastfeeding, she can help baby by eating these foods so that she can pass on the anti-inflammatory benefits to her baby.

Sleep Was A Whole Different Ballgame

9 ways to soothe a baby with eczema

Parents of newborns rarely get enough sleep, but that is even more the case for parents who are caring for babies with eczema. Id get only a few hours of sleep before waking up to my baby crying. At times, it seemed like dawn was almost a relief.

4. Its partly in the mind.Putting aside the practical aspects of bedtime, part of the frustration I felt was how impossible it was to get a full nights rest. However, once I changed my expectations and began to accept that sleep would be interrupted, getting a few hours of sleep in aggregate was considered a good night. That made coping with eczema at night much easier. After all, some sleep is better than no sleep!

5. Stay cool literally.Keeping cool during the nighttime was important, especially because we lived in Singapore, which has a tropical climate. Showers were taken close to bedtime, and the room was air-conditioned with a humidifier to prevent the air from becoming too dry and aggravated the skin. We co-slept with the baby as we found it helpful to know when my daughter was scratching. That way, we could immediately stop her from scratching and quickly soothe her back to sleep.

What Does An Eczema Flare

An eczema flare-up is simply the visible reaction on your little ones skin when an allergen triggers their eczema. It usually goes something like this:

  • In the beginning, youll see some slight redness on your babys skin caused by their own scratching. You may even see darker red lines where their fingernails left marks.
  • The continued scratching and redness will cause their skin to thicken and swell.
  • Left untreated, or after a long night with lots of scratching, your babys skin can develop small, slightly visible blisters.
  • Even with treatment, those blisters may break open and start to ooze a translucent liquid. If the scratching stops, those blisters will dry up, crust over, and disappear by themselves.
  • If the scratching doesnt stop and skin is further damaged, it can lead to a bacterial infection that may require antibiotics.
  • As serious as flare-ups sound, there are simple, effective ways to manage them. With a little extra love and care, you can relieve your babys symptoms and work to prevent future flare-ups.

What Are The Symptoms Of Atopic Dermatitis In A Child

Symptoms may come and go, or occur most or all of the time. Any area of the body may be affected. In babies, symptoms usually affect the face, neck, scalp, elbows, and knees. In children, symptoms usually affect the skin inside the elbows, on the back of the knees, the sides of the neck, around the mouth, and on the wrists, ankles, and hands.

Symptoms can occur a bit differently in each child. They can include:

    • Dry, scaly skin

    • Pale skin on the face

    • Small, raised bumps that may become crusty and leak fluid if scratched

    • Rough bumps on the face, upper arms, and thighs

    • Darkened skin of eyelids or around the eyes

    • Skin changes around the mouth, eyes, or ears

    • Raised, red areas

The symptoms of atopic dermatitis can be like other health conditions. Make sure your child sees his or her healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

    Causes Of Baby Eczema

HOW TO TREAT BABY ECZEMA AT 2020 I BEST TIPS |

It can be difficult to determine exactly whats causing your babys eczema. Its a skin condition that some people seem to inherit and is not spread through contact. There does seem to be a higher likelihood of suffering from eczema if a family member also has the condition.

Figuring out what causes your little one to have a flare-up is important to keep their skin comfortable and healthy. Here are some common causes of baby eczema:

    • General dry skin: some babies have seasonal flare-ups because their skin tends to be drier in the winter. Anytime your little ones skin is especially dry it may put them at risk for a flare up
    • Allergens: anything that your little one is allergic too can result in an eczema flare-up. This includes animal dander, pollen, and foods
    • Soaps, lotion, detergents and fragrance: soaps, lotions, and anything with fragrance may cause flare-ups. For babies with eczema prone skin, its best to opt for all-natural, unscented, mild products. Ideally, look for something thats designed for sensitive skin
    • Dry Air: not surprisingly, if you live in a dry climate or the air is very dry in your home, your baby may get dry skin which results in a flare-up. Try running a humidifier in your babys room to help with this
    • Wool or other rough fabric: these types of materials can irritate the skin and trigger your babys eczema

    Triggers Of Eczema Flare

    • Soaps. Never use bubble bath. It can cause a major flare-up.
    • Pollens. Keep your child from lying on the grass during grass pollen season.
    • Animals. Avoid any animals that make the rash worse.
    • Foods. If certain foods cause severe itching , avoid them.
    • Wool. Avoid wool fibers and clothes made of other scratchy, rough materials.
    • Dry Air. Use a humidifier if the air in your home is dry.
    • Herpes Virus Infection . Keep your child away from anyone with fever blisters . The herpes virus can cause a serious skin infection in children with eczema.
    • Eczema is not caused by laundry soap you use to wash clothing.

    What Causes Newborn Eczema

The causes of eczema in babies differs but there appears to be a strong genetic link. Talk to your parents and grandparents to see if you suffered from eczema as a baby. You can also ask your in-laws to see if your babys father had the condition. Some babies also make too few fat cells which cause their skin to dehydrate. Dry skin promotes the development of eczema. This is a condition that they grow out of when they reach toddlerhood.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Basics

  • What’s it made from: Apple cider vinegar is as simple and as natural as apple juice with the addition of yeast. The yeast changes the fruit sugar into alcohol . Bacteria then turns the alcohol into acetic acid.
  • What makes it effective: Apple cider vinegar is a natural source of C and B-vitamins and contains antibacterial properties. The acidic nature will naturally help balance your bodys pH levels. Soaking in apple cider vinegar will nourish and moisturize the skin.
  • Apple cider vinegar history: Apple cider vinegar has been around since the days of Mark Antony and Cleopatra! Ancient Greek doctors used it to treat wounds and mixed it with honey to help cure coughs and colds. In modern times, apple cider vinegar has been used, among other things, to improve heart health, treat dandruff and to aid in weight loss. Its important to note that these claims have not been supported by modern medicine. However, studies have found acetic acid alone to be beneficial for some conditions including reducing obesity and improving blood sugar and insulin levels for type 2 diabetes.

    Eczema And Food Allergies

Babies with eczema are at a higher risk than the general population for developing food allergies. In fact, up to 67 percent of infants with severe eczema and 25 percent of infants with mild eczema will develop a food allergy, says Jonathan Spergel M.D., board certified allergist.

    • If baby has mild to moderate eczema, early and sustained exposure to allergenic foods, like peanuts, cows milk, and eggs, has been shown to decrease this risk by up to 80 percent. When baby starts solids around 6 months, I recommend trying Ready, Set, Food!, a program that gives parents the option to add the most common allergenic foods to breastmilk, formula, or purees in a safe and effective way
    • If baby has severe eczema: Consult your pediatrician before starting early allergen introduction. They may recommend allergy testing prior to introducing any allergens.

How Do You Treat Baby Eczema

    How To Treat Baby Eczema

In order to treat baby eczema, itâs important to understand what causes it in the first place. For the most part, atopic eczema happens during a childâs first year of life, a PubMed study reported, and researchers found that kids with eczema often have an allergy to house dust mites. So how does that lead to the red, rashy skin? Dr. Amin explains: âThe primary function of our skin barrier is to restrict water loss and to prevent entry of external pathogens,â she says. âOne of the ongoing research behind eczema is looking at a protein called filaggrin that can have loss-of-function in many moderate to severe cases of eczema.â Due to the lack of filaggrin which leads to more water loss through the skin, this leads to extremely dry skin. And because itâs itchy, your child is bound to scratch their skin, which makes it even more inflamed, causing your kiddo to get caught in a never-ending itch-scratch cycle.

    What Is Eczema In Infants

They often call eczema that occurs on babies atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis. The ailment usually strikes between two and four months. One day it covers your babys chubby cheeks with red, scaly, itchy bumps. As the days progress, the rash moves to behind the ears, on the scalp, elbow creases, diaper area, and behind the knees. The small pimples often come to a yellow head and burst.

Then the lesion refills with fluid and pops again. Your baby might scratch at his face or other body regions to relieve the incessant itching. If you do not put mittens on your infants hands or trim their fingernails short, they will cause scratches in the sensitive skin that could become further infected when bacteria. Infant eczema treatment is complicated and requires a multi-pronged approach.

    Gentle Soaps And Detergents

Laundry detergent can contain harsh chemicals that aggravate eczema.

Many body washes and cleansers contain detergents, which help provide a soapy lather. Detergents and other lathering agents can dry out the skin, especially in people with eczema.

Bar soaps can also be harsh on the skin because of their alkalinity.

Try using a gentle, no-lather, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid products with rough particles for scrubbing or exfoliating, as these can further irritate the skin.

Many people with eczema also find that switching to a more gentle, fragrance- or color-free laundry detergent can help improve symptoms.

Try skipping fabric softener, which lingers on clothes and often contains fragrances and chemicals that can cause skin irritation.

Sitting next to a fireplace or near a furnace may feel good, but it can make eczema symptoms worse. The hot, dry air can dehydrate the skin and aggravate the itchiness of eczema.

Use a humidifier during the dry winter months and avoid getting too close to heaters and fireplaces.
