Ingredients To Make A Good Sugar Scrub

A good sugar scrub has 4 elements: sugar, an antiseptic, a skin rejuvenator, and a moisturizer.

First I played around with a few variations of sugar.I had brown sugar at home, so I used that for this sugar scrub. However, if you want to use cane sugar, thats okay too.

Next I looked into adding antiseptics.I tried using lemon, but combined with the sugar it had a really hard sting. Ouch! In the end I decided to omit acids like lemon and vinegar from the mix and go with baking soda for an antiseptic instead.

For rejuvenating properties I chose nutmeg .

Nutmeg has natural anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Its also been used to reduce infection and swelling, and lighten acne spots and scars. If you dont have nutmeg or are allergic to it, you dont have to use itthe scrub will still work without it.

Lastly for the moisturizing part, I used my favorite: coconut oil!Coconut oil is full of healthy fats that moisturize and maintain the integrity of your skin. I also happen to have a few jars lying around, so it was kind of a no brainer.

Some Dermatological Studies Suggest That Oolong Tea Can Help You Too

How to Properly Exfoliate Eczema

Patients in a study published in The Archives of Dermatology drank oolong tea three times a day for 6 months and most of them reported marked improvement to their eczema. Oolong isn’t even the best tea you can drink!

Dr. Verallo-Rowell, clinical researcher and founder of VMV Hypoallergenics, explains: “Tea does have anti-oxidant properties from its many polyphenols, and these may give it anti-inflammatory properties. I am familiar with many good studies on this for green tea, but not oolong. Oolong is more oxidized which makes it less of an anti-oxidant, and thus less anti-inflammatory than green tea.”

In conclusion: drink tea in general. You’ve got options here.

I Only Trust Zinc Oxide Sunscreen And I Wear It 365 Days A Year

Every day I apply one of my Sheer Strength Pure Physical SPF 50+ zinc oxide sunscreens. My skin will not tolerate chemical sunscreen ingredients and I avoid them like the plague. Chemical sunscreen intolerance is normal for someone with sensitive skin such as me. Plus, over my 35+ year career, Ive done well over 200,000 skin exams on active Californians, allowing me to compare the protection of different sunscreens. Zinc oxide products clearly give the best protection, there is no question when you look at peoples skin under magnification all day. I only trust my skin to zinc oxide.

I wear my Matte Tinted SPF 50+ or Invisible Creme SPF 50+ on my face every day. I apply my Spray SPF 50+ on all other exposed skin such as my neck, chest, back of my hands etc. I touch up during sun exposure days with my SPF 30 Refresh Powder. When swimming, I wear my water resistant Spray SPF 30. These are all hypoallergenic and free of chemical UV filter ingredients meaning they are ideal for eczema-prone skin.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention

If your skin isnt responding to over-the-counter treatments, there are prescription topicals that your dermatologist can prescribe. Stronger prescription topical steroids are available for short-term use. Protopic 0.03% and 0.1% ointment and Elidel 1% cream are calcineurin inhibitors, meaning topical medications that work to inhibit the immune system to reduce inflammation and irritation. Dr. Lortscher typically uses Protopic ointment and Elidel cream to wean patients off topical steroids.

Recently, the FDA approved new treatment options including Eucrisa and Dupixent .

  • Eucrisa is a topical, non-steroid treatment. Eucrisa works differently than Protopic and Elidel, targeting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase that helps the body deal with inflammation.
  • Dupixent is an injection for individuals who have eczema resistant to topical treatments or who do not have access to topical treatment. Dupixent works by blocking factors that allow white blood cells to communicate inflammation.

How To Exfoliate Eczema

It’s important to remember that eczema prone skin is very fragile, so you’ll want to avoid over exfoliating.

To begin, choose a gentle natural soap like this Emily Skin Soothers Liquid Soap. Not only is this soap gentle on irritated skin, but its fatty olive oil, avocado oil and shea butter base offers moisturizing properties that are needed when bathing.

If you prefer using a hard soap, you can also check out this Emily Skin Soothers Soap for Eczema that contains the same ingredients.

Next, you’ll want to opt for a gentle exfoliating tool like this one to help lift dead skin cells which can cause future breakouts. A silicone brush like this one can also be a great tool for skin that’s a little more sensitive and prone to irritation.

Another wonderful tool to exfoliate eczema is a natural scrub. This DIY Sugar Scrub for Dry Eczema from the Flawless Program combines coconut oil, sugar and baking soda making it the perfect treatment for flaky, crusty eczema.

Because a natural scrub will help lift dead skin cells, you won’t need to use an exfoliation tool.

Tips For Exfoliating Eczema

  • Dont exfoliate every day. Although exfoliating can be an important step for those with eczema, keep in mind that it is possible to overdo it. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, so avoid exfoliating every day . Most people find that once a week or even every couple days works best to manage their symptoms while also being gentle on sensitive skin.
  • Use gentle products. When you do exfoliate, make sure youre not using very abrasive products . Pair a gentle cleanser or moisturizer with our mild ViaBuff Body Exfoliator for an effective, yet non-abrasive exfoliation. Our buffs have been designed to last up to three months and let you use less of your favorite products, thanks to their innovative open-cell structure.
  • Apply pressure, but dont scrub. When exfoliating, you want to apply some pressure, but avoid scrubbing your skin. The idea is to gently sweep away the dry outer layer of skin while not damaging the new layer underneath. Scrubbing too harshly can end up kickstarting that cycle of newly inflamed skin cells, and wont do any good to treat the underlying problem.

Lipid Rich Moisturizers Help Heal And Support The Skin Barrier In Eczema

I know that applying a really good moisturizer to eczema-prone skin is critically important to hydrate skin and help hold water throughout the skin layers. Lipids in a moisturizer also replenish lost lipids in the skin barrier. Both elements are important to help weakened eczema-prone skin resist transepidermal water loss . I use moisturizers with ceramides and skin-friendly botanical oils.

The Drugstore Classics Are Honestly The Best

“I generally recommend the classic Eucerin or the Eucerin Eczema Relief products, Aquaphor, Aveeno Eczema Therapy products and Cetaphil cream. The heavier, greasier and thicker the emollients are the more effective they will be, and increasing the frequency with which you use them will also increase their effectiveness. If it’s a light lotion that looks pretty and smells nice but three minutes after you apply it you can’t tell that you used it then it’s really not doing anything.” – Dr. Hadley King, Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, MD of NYC’s SKINNEY Medspa.

Keep The Cleanser Simple For Both Face And Body

I bath or shower with my Naturally Best Bar Soap that is fragrance free and entirely hypoallergenic. This soap is in every shower and at every sink in my home. When I bathe, I only soap up soiled or body-odor prone areas of the armpits, groin, buttock and feet.

I wash my face with my Extremely Gentle Foaming Facial Cleanser. I double cleanse with my Naturally Hydrating Pore Minimizing Toner. I put them together in my Skin Cleanse Zen kit.

People with extremely eczema-prone skin may need to use skin cleansing products that are even more gentle such as VaniCream Bar Soap for face and body cleansing. It is a very safe alternative but not nearly as lovely as my personal cleansing skin care routine in my opinion. I’m grateful my skin cuts me a little slack here.

You Don’t Actually Need To Soap Up Every Day In Fact You Probably Shouldn’t

“The skin dries out when the fatty cement like substances that lock the top layer of our skin together are removed or degraded by harsh soaps, which change the acidity of the skin. Use mild soaps infrequently. Your face, underarms, and groin need soap every day but the remainder of the body does not — every other day is fine.” – Dr. Adam Friedman, Director of Dermatologic Research at Montefiore Medical Center.

    Should You Exfoliate Eczema

Exfoliating is rubbing something against your skin to remove dead and dry skin cells. It helps to clean your skin and remove dirt and bacteria as well, and can lift hard crusts that often occur with eczema . Eczema sufferers tend to have a lot more dead and dry skin cells to get rid of than other people, so many sufferers find relief in regularly dry brushing their skin. It also removes the flakes that can sometimes come off in public which can cause embarrassment for many of us. The dead skin and hard crusts on the surface of eczema skin also stop moisturizers and topical creams from being able to penetrate in and really do their work, so it is recommended as a regular activity for people living with the condition. You should only exfoliate dry, scaly or crusty eczema patches, however. Do not exfoliate any skin that is cracked, weeping on bleeding, or already angry, as this will make things worse. Think of it more as a maintenance activity, for in between flare-ups, to help clean your skin and remove the dry and dead flakes.
