Ingredients To Make A Good Sugar Scrub

How to Exfoliate Eczema Prone Skin | Treating Eczema Naturally

A good sugar scrub has 4 elements: sugar, an antiseptic, a skin rejuvenator, and a moisturizer.

First I played around with a few variations of sugar.I had brown sugar at home, so I used that for this sugar scrub. However, if you want to use cane sugar, thats okay too.

Next I looked into adding antiseptics.I tried using lemon, but combined with the sugar it had a really hard sting. Ouch! In the end I decided to omit acids like lemon and vinegar from the mix and go with baking soda for an antiseptic instead.

For rejuvenating properties I chose nutmeg .

Nutmeg has natural anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Its also been used to reduce infection and swelling, and lighten acne spots and scars. If you dont have nutmeg or are allergic to it, you dont have to use itthe scrub will still work without it.

Lastly for the moisturizing part, I used my favorite: coconut oil!Coconut oil is full of healthy fats that moisturize and maintain the integrity of your skin. I also happen to have a few jars lying around, so it was kind of a no brainer.

One Last Thing About Taming Eczema Symptoms With A Smart Skin

This just may be one of the best scrubs weve ever used, hands down, a team Byrdie fave for the ideal scrubby, though not abrasive, texture. Its a result of the combination of bamboo charcoal and pumice that mechanically exfoliate. There are also glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids in the mix to further up the exfoliating benefits. The fragrance-free variant is a great choice for sensitive skin, though it also comes in sandalwood and eucalyptus scents. All three are sophisticated, as is the chic and minimalistic packaging.

The Donts Of Exfoliation

Now that you know what to do, lets briefly discuss what not to do. First of all, make sure that you do not exfoliate every day. Overdoing it can actually strip the skin of its natural moisture which can cause increased irritation. We recommend exfoliating every one or two weeks.

Keeping your exfoliation to a minimum will help eliminate dead skin cells without doing more harm than good.

Another thing you absolutely should not do is aggressively scrub your skin. Your eczema-prone skin is sensitive enough. Scrubbing the skin can damage your skin which can prolong the healing time.

It goes without saying that you should be as gentle as possible when exfoliating your skin. We recommend lightly sweeping dead skin away or lightly pressing down on the affected area in a circular motion.

Finally, if you are experiencing oozing or weeping eczema, hold off on the exfoliation. The beneficial effects of exfoliation are intended for thick and dry eczema.

What To Look For

1. Shea butter, glycerin, and lanolin. These moisturizing ingredients repair your skin and help it look healthier. Look for skin care products that list one of these first, second, or third on the ingredients list.

2. Hyaluronic acid. It helps draw moisture from the air to your skin. Smooth on cream with hyaluronic acid for an extra boost of moisture and to ease flaky, dry skin.

3. Niacinamide. If red patches show through no matter how many layers of makeup you pile on, try a serum or cream that has this compound, also called vitamin B3. It can reduce redness from eczema by strengthening your skinâs natural barrier. Apply niacinamide cream first, then put on cosmetics.

S In Using Coffee Grinds

Step 1. The simplest way is to take out the remains of the coffee grind that was used to make coffee, preferably when it is warm. Cool form is alright too.

Step 2. Mix it with any oil mentioned above. I like to use olive oil in this case it seems to work well with the grinds.

Step 3. For every two tablespoons of coffee grinds, you would add three teaspoons of oil. It should come to a consistency like the image below.

If its is not consistent enough simply add more oil.

Warning: Coffee grounds will be a bit messy, so you may spend a bit of time cleaning up the tub once you are done.

How To Use Emollients

Use your emollient all the time, even if youre not experiencing symptoms.

Many people find it helpful to keep separate supplies of emollients at work or school, or a tub in the bathroom and one in a living area.

To apply the emollient:

  • use a large amount
  • do not rub it in smooth it into the skin in the same direction the hair grows
  • after a bath or shower, gently pat the skin dry and apply the emollient while the skin is still moist to keep the moisture in

You should use an emollient at least twice a day if you can, or more often if you have very dry skin.

During a flare-up, apply generous amounts of emollient more frequently, but remember to treat inflamed skin with a topical corticosteroid as emollients used on their own are not enough to control it.

Do not put your fingers into an emollient pot use a spoon or pump dispenser instead, as this reduces the risk of infection. And never share your emollient with other people.

“Water, counterintuitively, can dry out the skin. It’s important to take brief showers with warm, not hot, water. And you definitely want to avoid products with alcohol in them. Any cleansers should be gentle soap substitutes such as Dove or Cetaphil Cleanser, rather than harsher soaps with detergents that will dry out the skin. ” – Dr. Hadley C. King, Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Even though you should take short showers, that doesn’t mean bathtime is out of the question. Oatmeal baths and bleach baths can be good for you. Colloidal oatmeal is proven to be good for eczema-prone skin. Aveeno has a Bath Treatment for eczema that works for poison ivy relief, too.
