What Does Baby Eczema Look Like

Does coconut oil help with eczema?

Look for rashes that are red, dry, scaly, and itching your little one. Theyll first appear on the face, elbows, knees, or other places that are easy for them to scratch and rub when they crawl around. The irritation can spread to other parts of the body that are not properly moisturized. When infected, the skin forms yellow crusty patches or small pus-filled bumps.

What About Coconut Oil For Really Dry Skin

Eczema is not the only skin problem people have to deal with. When the humidity drops and the furnace comes on, skin suffers. Some people develop a condition dermatologists call xerosis. Dont you just love those dermatological tongue twisters. It comes from the Greek word xero, or dry.

People with xerosis have abnormally dry skin. An article in the journal Dermatitis describes it this way:

Xerosis is a common skin condition characterized by dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin, associated with a defect in skin barrier function, and treated with moisturizers. People in the tropics have effectively used coconut oil as a traditional moisturizer for centuries. Recently, the oil also has been shown to have skin antiseptic effects. A moisturizer with antiseptic effects has value, but there are no clinical studies to document the efficacy and safety of coconut oil as a skin moisturizer.

The researchers set out to conduct just such a randomized double-blind clinical trial. They assigned 34 patients to apply either coconut oil or mineral oil to their legs twice a day for two weeks. They then performed a sensitive test to determine skin hydration.

How To Store Coconut Oil

Generally, coconut oil should be stored in a cool, dark location in a sealed container or in the refrigerator. Virgin coconut oil can last for two to three years when stored properly without exposure to heat or light. Do not use coconut oil and immediately dispose of it if it shows signs of spoilage, including mold, a yellowish tint, or an unpleasant smell.

Because coconut oil melts at 78°F, it may liquefy or become very runny on warm days. If this happens, stir the coconut oil well before using it or put it in the refrigerator to allow it to solidify, if youd like a firmer texture.

Is It Okay To Apply Coconut Oil To My Skin

Can Coconut Oil Help Eczema? in 2020

It depends… many eczema sufferers find their skin reacts to coconut oils, with increased itchiness, stinging and/or redness. There are some people who like it , but it’s not usually hydrating enough for most people with eczema.

Karen says “My personal experience with coconut oil is I find it dries out my skin. I naturally have dry skin and coconut oil just sinks in too quickly and leaves my skin flakey and dry by the end of the day. My verdict – it’s a terrible moisturiser for people with dry skin. For those with normal to oily skin, you might like it. The best way to know is to test it for yourself.”

What Are The Best Natural Treatments For Eczema

Persistent itchy skin can be the most irritating thing. Eczema is a condition that leaves your skin inflamed and hypersensitive, leaving scaly skin and redness that requires special treatment to eradicate it, affecting people of all ages. Atopic dermatitis is particularly common â starting in childhood â causing rashes to form in your knees or elbows . Scratching your skin too much can expose it to diseases and infections.

As many treatments as there are for eczema, you may be left wondering what causes eczema to flare up after using some of them. Some medication can exacerbate eczema and lead to your skin being even drier than before. While Samatha Bugsith of NSS Dermatology expert may recommend prescription medication to ease eczema, she could point you to natural treatments you can try to help replenish your moisture and strengthen your skin in the soonest possible time. They have various benefits and can make the healing process more comforting for you.

If youve already been taking prescription medication for eczema, consult with your dermatologist right away before trying any of these. Coconut Oil

Perhaps a better natural oil you can try as an alternative treatment for eczema is coconut oil. The National Eczema Association has pointed to coconut oil as an effective substance in preventing infection by reducing staph bacteria that develop on the skin.

Does Coconut Oil Actually Work Any Magic On Eczema

Most people can agree that coconut oil is seemingly a magic elixir for anything that ails you. But what about when it comes to eczema? Can this delicious-smelling liquid actually improve it? Or does using coconut oil for this purpose not really hold scientific water?

You may have heard rumors that coconut oil can work wonders for eczema, specifically atopic dermatitis, the type of eczema that is most prevalent. Some people think coconut oil can reduce eczema flare-ups, soothe inflammation, and lower the risk of infection if you have open sores or cracks in your skin.

Of course, when a product has amassed such a cult following, it can be tough to sort out whats legit and whats total B.S. Thats why we roped in some experts for the real story on coconut oil and eczema.

Eczema happens when your top layer of skin is essentially sleeping on the job. Normally that layer should lock in enough moisture to keep your skin hydrated and supple while also warding off bacteria, irritants, allergens, and other substances that can cause aggravation, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you have eczema, a gene variation prevents your top layer of skin from upholding this duty.

The first piece of good news here is that people with eczema usually dont experience these symptoms all the time. Instead, they tend to have flares when theyre exposed to triggers like sweat, stress, soaps, detergents, dust, and pollen, the Mayo Clinic says.

Natural Oils For Eczema: Which Ones Are Safe And Effective

Natural oil has been used in skin care for centuries. A good number of natural oils have beneficial fatty acids that help to repair the skins natural barrier, which is defective in patients with eczema.

But not all natural oils are good for our skin. Some can be irritating and may even worsen eczema. The plant source, composition and the ways that natural oils are extracted determine their benefit and harm.

Cold-pressed fixed oils are made by extracting oil from seeds or nuts without adding chemicals or heat, and therefore tend to be safer for skin use.

On the other hand, essential oils are extracted through steam-distillation of aromatic flowers or leaves. Heat and chemicals added during essential oil extraction can produce irritating compounds, and therefore should be avoided for skin use.

Several natural oils have been found to be safe and beneficial alternative moisturizers. Virgin coconut oil contains monolaurin, a fatty acid that mitigates Staphylococcus aureus colonization that can typically develop in eczema patients.

Virgin coconut oil is also superior in improving eczema compared to mineral oil . Virgin sunflower seed oil has anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe itchy and inflamed eczema skin, and can improve skin hydration and preserve the integrity of the skins natural barrier.

Not all coconut oil is the same. There are two types of coconut oilsvirgin and refined. The best coconut oil is considered virgin, unrefined, and organic. Virgin coconut oil is created from cold-pressing the coconut meat liquid and separating oil from the water and milk. On the other hand, refined, bleached, and deodorized coconut oil is chemically treated from the dried kernel of the coconut. This process also strips away some of the nutrients in the coconut oil. The types of refined coconut oils on the market will include hydrogenated coconut oil, liquid coconut oil, expeller-pressed coconut oil, and coconut oil.

What about extra virgin coconut oil? This is mostly a marketing ploy. It is not necessary bad for you however, there are no regulating bodies to govern whether the oil is extra virgin, like there are with the olive oil industry.

    What Are Essential Oils

Essential oils are plant extracts made from various parts of the plant including flowers, bark, leaves, or fruit.

In the process of extraction, the compound that produces fragrance is concentrated and captured.

There are three ways essential oils can be used: through aromatherapy, topically, or ingested.

Aromatherapy involves inhaling the oils, usually by adding them to water or carrier oil and putting them in a diffuser, and is said to help with stress and anxiety.

They should also be diluted for topical application, usually with carrier oil or with a cream .

When applied topically, they can sometimes cause burns or damage, so its best to talk about any treatment with a dermatologist or health care provider before use.

You can ingest some essential oils in teas or by putting a few drops on your tongue, but they typically need to be diluted first and some are poisonous, especially to children, so they should only be ingested under the guidance of your physician and in general, internal use is not recommended.
