How Does Baby Eczema Differ From Dry Skin
Dry skin is a symptom of eczema. Your pediatrician can diagnose eczema by examining your babys skin. He or she may send you to a pediatric dermatologist for confirmation and treatment if the condition is severe.
In general, dry skin can be handled at home with some moisturizer and isnt as bothersome as eczema. However, babies with darker skin tend to have drier skin than those with lighter skin making moisturization even more crucial.
Grapefruit Seed Extract And How It Really Works
Grapefruit seed extract is a supposedly all natural liquid extracted from the seeds of the grapefruit .
There are are numerous studies which indicate the antimicrobial activity of grapefruit seed extract is actually due to synthetic preservative agents contained in most extracts. All natural extracts, which did not contain the preservative did not demonstrate any antimicrobial activity.
The synthetic preservative agent found in most grapefruit seed extract is benzethonium chloride. The same antimicrobial agent is common in regular hand sanitizers. So potentially, they would produce the same results.
However, even considering these facts, grapefruit seed extract was really effective for controlling the seborrheic dermatitis around my nose. The results were most significant at the very beginning.
For about 2-3 months I simply washed my face with the stuff and the seborrheic dermatitis seemed to have disappeared. However, after a few months it seemed to loose effectiveness and the skin seemed less health overall .
If you do plan on using grapefruit seed extract to treat your seborrheic dermatitis, you might want to take a further look into the safety of benzethonium chloride. This document, states that it is safe and effective for topical application even when applied several times per day for several years.

Signs And Symptoms Of Perioral Dermatitis
People with perioral dermatitis have a visible rash around their mouth, says Peter Lio, MD, a dermatologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
“Typically, it would present as small red papules, or bumps, around the mouth and sometimes nose and eye areas, he says. Unlike mild irritation in these areas, this rash persists for weeks and beyond.
Additionally, perioral dermatitis is often associated with redness and scaling, says Arielle Nagler, MD, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Health.
Patients often complain of itching and burning, she says. Since certain topicals can exacerbate perioral dermatitis and treatments are all by prescription, medical care is recommended.

Invest In A Humidifier
Dry air and dust can all exacerbate eczema symptoms. Air conditioners are a part of modern life we heat our houses when its cold and we cool them down when it gets hot. This is great for our comfort but terrible for the quality of the air in our homes!
A humidifier adds moisture back into the air which is excellent news for your babys skin. It can also help your baby breathe easier which can lead to a more restful sleep. Unlike old school vaporisers which left the walls wet with condensation, modern humidifiers offer cool or warm mist settings and filter out big particles in the air.

Eczema on the nose is characterized by the following symptoms:
- Itching or burning sensation
- Greasy or swollen skin
- White or yellowish crusty flakes

Zinc Pyrithione Cream An Alternative To Using Head And Shoulders
There are currently several creams on the market that contain zinc pyrithione. The one I personally used was from a company called Noble Formula and was purchased from Amazon. My jar is practically full and if your located in Vancouver, BC you are more than welcome to come pick it up .
Initially I found a post in which a lady mentioned using Head and Shoulders to treat seborrheic dermatitis on her face. She claimed to have great results and mentioned she had been using it long term. After trying her method I saw great results as well. However, it felt like Head and Shoulders was not well suited for the face.
After a quick Google search, I ended up on the Amazon page for the cream mentioned above. Reviews were highly positive and I quickly place my order.
For several weeks I had spectacular results and I felt that my issues were a thing of the past. However, as time went on, the effectiveness diminished similar to many other products I had tried.
Increasing the amount of applications did seem to help, but overall it felt like the cream made the facial skin very sensitive to the elements. Especially the nose, which at the time seemed to become very susceptible to the sun.

Skin Care For Facial Eczema
Moisturize. The best way to keep your skin from drying out is with thick creams and ointments , not with thinner lotions. The best time to do this is right after you wash your face. If ointments are too greasy for your face, try using them only at night.
Clean gently. Soap can irritate your skin, but washing with water alone may not be enough, especially if your face is oily. Use a gentle non-soap cleanser or a medical emollient instead. Pat dry with a soft towel.
Watch the temperature. Use only cool — not hot — water on your face, and for as little time as possible.
Skip makeup.Donât use cosmetics on irritated skin.
Home Remedies Can Help
The best way to manage eczema around the eyes is to keep the skin in the area highly moisturized.
- Avoid drying face washes. Choose leave-on emollient products that keep the skin moisturized while they cleanse it.
- Avoid fragrances. Many skincare products contain added fragrances. Choose products that are fragrance-free.
- Use gentle products. Ask your dermatologist for recommendations for gentle moisturizers. These will keep skin moist and free from irritation.
- Wear sunscreen and sunglasses. Sun exposure can make the skin on your eyes more sensitive and lead to eczema outbreaks. Aim to limit exposure.
- Avoid triggers. If you know certain allergens or products trigger an outbreak, steer clear of these. Stick to tried-and-true favorites that you know dont irritate your skin.
Unfortunately, eczema is a persistent skin condition that is tricky to treat. For some people, eczema subsides over time as they get older. Other people, however, may have to deal with the condition throughout their lifetime.
As more information is gained on the condition, more effective treatment and symptom management options are becoming available. A combination of the above treatment options and preventative measures works best for most people.

Poorly Made Skin Care Products
A majority of skincare products on the market today contain harmful ingredients like synthetic fragrances, SLES, parabens, and sulfates that actually degrade our skins barrier and natural defenses. The Nose Is Exactly Where My Facial Seborrheic Dermatitis Started
Prior to having seborrheic dermatitis on my face, it was present on my scalp. However, at that time I didnât even know it was called seborrheic dermatitis. Then one day I noticed a strange rash appearing on the right side of my nose.
At first I ignored this strange rash, but it didnât seem to want to go away. After a few weeks it seemed to be getting more irritated and expanding in size. So, I decided to see a doctor.
The doctor prescribed an antibiotic cream, which was to be used for two weeks. The cream did work and my rash went away. However, shortly after I stopped using it, the rash came back ever bigger.
This time, it actually seemed to be spreading. Fast forward about a year and dozen of different treatment approaches, the seborrheic dermatitis spread to a large portion of my face. The details of my whole experience can be found here .
If your seborrheic dermatitis is limited to your nose, youâre quite fortunate. However, take into account my story and consider taking a proactive approach before it has the ability to spread further.
