The body is designed with this fantastic ability to self-regulate, and this is called homeostasis. The body produces sweat as a way of releasing heat and regulating temperature, while its acidic pH keeps bacterial and fungal microflora in balance, protecting the skin from infection. Sweating is also a natty way of getting rid of unwanted stuff like water, urea and lactate which can naturally moisturise the skin such a clever mechanism when it works properly.

Signs Of An Infection

It is very interesting to compare the reaction to itch and pain as two different stimuli. pain and itch have very different behavioral patterns. The central processing of itch involves multiple areas of the brain. The specific brain areas activated by itch are also involved with the central processing of pain. This implies that neural networks activated by these two stimuli are not distinct. Yet itch and pain have different activation patterns and reflexes.

Pain causes a withdrawal reflex. If pain is experienced, we try to protect the painful part of the body and not touch or overuse it. For example, if you hurt your back, you become very protective, avoid bending, and move with trepidation. Itch has the opposite behavioral pattern the scratch reflex draws us to the itchy area.   • Negative affective aspects of itch, and memory of negative experience
  • Localized scratching reward mechanisms

The cortex in the frontal brain is the area of reward and decision-making. this gives one explanation for the compulsive and often satisfying nature of scratching. therefore physical and emotional components of itch are linked together.

The Epidermis As The Itch Receptor Unit

The epidermis consists of keratinocyte cells, which are constantly reproducing then moving upward and being shed as dead skin cells. In addition to keratinocytes, the epidermis contains nerve receptors and chemical mediators, which also appear to be involved with the sensation of itch. One theory concerns nerve endings in the epidermis, as it is thought that an itch sensation is generated through nerve receptors adjacent to the keratinocyte cells. specific nerve receptors for itch have not yet been identified in the epidermis. However, scientific experiments have shown that if the epidermis is removed, itch is abolished. This proves that itch must generate from the epidermis. In addition, itch is uniquely restricted to the skin, mucous membranes and the cornea of the eye, where there are epidermal layers. No other body tissue experiences itch.

How Do I Take Care Of Myself To Manage My Symptoms

Your symptoms will give you the urge to scratch your itchy skin at night and you might not feel relief until you do. But try your best not to scratch your skin. Abrupt temperature and humidity changes can sometimes irritate the skin for example, going in and out of air-conditioned buildings on hot days or heated buildings on cold days.Hard physical activity or exercise that makes you sweat heavily can also trigger the itch of eczema.Suggestions include:

  • In winter, dont overheat your house. Dress warmly when going outdoors and remove the extra layers as soon as you return.
  • In summer, dont over cool your house. Air conditioners can dry out the air and irritate your skin.
  • Avoid hard physical activity in hot weather. For example, do your gardening first thing in the morning, or in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky.

Keep your bed room cool, this also improves on sleep quality in general. Our bedrooms should ideally be below 18°c / 64.5°F. If your bedroom gets hot during summer keep the blinds/ curtains as well as windows closed during the day and open to air out when it gets cooler at night. Use a fan or air conditioning to get a cooling air flow.

2. COOLING SLEEPWEAR

The best pajamas for eczema should help you keep the best micro climate, ensure you dont overheat and quickly wick moisture away from your skin. Look for natural, breathable and lightweight and soft fabrics. Your bed linen and bedding should also be breathable to avoid heat build-up during the night.

3. COOLING DIET

To avoid overheating at night have a light meal before going to bed, heavy meals keep our metabolism working at night and as a result our body temperature increases. Reduce your intake of alcohol and caffeine. As Dr med Lutz Graumann puts it: A no-go for good sleep is alcohol. The moment we drink alcohol, there is absolutely no restorative sleep.”
