Eczema Rash All Over Body

What Is Eczema What Does It Look And Feel Like

How I Cured My Eczema

Eczema is a condition that causes your skin to become dry, red, itchy and bumpy. Its one of many types of dermatitis. Eczema damages the skin barrier function . This loss of barrier function makes your skin more sensitive and more prone to infection and dryness.

Eczema doesnt harm your body. It doesnt mean that your skin is dirty or infected, and its not contagious. There are treatments that can help manage your symptoms.

In the word dermatitis, derm means skin and itis means inflammation. The word as a whole means inflammation of the skin. Eczema originates from the Greek word ekzein which means to boil over or break out.

What Is A Rash

A rash is usually a red mark on the surface of the skin. They can be caused by a host of reasons and well dig into that a little later. In all, a rash is a reaction to something. It could become swollen, red and even blister. Regardless, this is your body reacting to something it doesnt like. Your body does not produce a rash because its happy!

Genetics can also play a part in your the rashes you get. Depending on your genes you could be more sensitive to certain environmental factors, foods or otherwise. Its also worth pointing out that rash is not a specific diagnosis. It simply refers to any sort of inflammation or discoloration that distorts the skins normal appearance.

Your doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid cream or ointment to apply to your rash. This will help reduce itching and calm inflammation. Use it right after bathing. Follow your doctors directions for using this medicine or check the label for proper use. Call your doctor if your skin does not get better after 3 weeks of using the medicine.

Antihistamines like hydroxyzine reduce itching. They can help make it easier to not scratch. A new class of drugs, called immunomodulators, works well if you have a severe rash. Two drugs in this class are tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. These drugs keep your immune system from overreacting when stimulated by an allergen. However, they can affect your immune system. So the Food and Drug Administration recommends that these drugs be used only when other treatments wont work.

Try not to scratch the irritated area on your skin, even if it itches. Scratching can break the skin. Bacteria can enter these breaks and cause infection. Moisturizing your skin will help prevent itchiness.

Q : How Is Eczema Related To Food Allergy

Rash All Over Body Except Face Doesnt Itch

Whilst food allergy can trigger or worsen eczema symptoms in some people, food allergy is rarely the cause of eczema. Most food allergy causes hives , vomiting and irritability within 30 minutes of eating the offending food. Food allergy only occasionally triggers delayed eczema flare ups.

Many babies with moderate or severe eczema will also have a food allergy. In some babies with severe eczema, short term removal of certain food/s using a medically supervised elimination diet may result in better eczema control. An elimination diet should be supervised by a clinical immunology/allergy specialist , in association with a dietitian with specialised knowledge of food allergies.

If there is no improvement in two weeks on the elimination diet, it means that food is unlikely to be the cause of the eczema. If the skin improves, foods are introduced one at a time as a medically supervised food challenge, to confirm which food causes the eczema to flare.

If food allergy is not the cause of eczema, removal of the food/s will not reduce symptoms.

Children with eczema and/or food allergy can have false positive allergy tests, and this can lead to unnecessary removal of foods which may affect growth and development. Removal of foods may also increase the risk of developing allergy to those foods. Therefore, allergy test results should always be interpreted by a clinical immunology/allergy specialist.

This Woman Thought Her Itchy Skin Was A Sign Of Eczema Until She Was Diagnosed With Cancer

26-year-old Eleanor now wants to raise awareness of the lesser known symptoms of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

When 26-year-old Eleanor Rooney noticed her whole body becoming itchy in early 2016, she went to the doctor. What she didn’t realise at the time, however, was that an initial diagnosis of eczema would later turn into the discovery that she had stage 2 cancer.

Having suffered from severe eczema in her last year of university back in 2014, Eleanor wasn’t too concerned about her latest bout, but because there were quite bad patches she thought she’d go and get it checked out anyway. “I would show my arms and legs where my skin had got infected, so they were prescribing me lots of different creams and shower treatments to deal with it,” Eleanor told Cosmopolitan UK.

Despite mentioning that she felt itchy everywhere – “even in areas where eczema didnt typically affect” – she was reassured it was all down to her dry and sensitive skin.

But later that year, in September 2016, Eleanor felt a small, almost unnoticeable lump under her collarbone. Initially she wasn’t too concerned. “I suppose discovering a lump in your collarbone is a bit different to, say, your breast – or somewhere that we have grown up knowing is a warning sign and an indication of cancer,” she said. But also of the mind-set that there was no harm in getting it checked out, she went to the doctor nonetheless.

“I thought I was healthy”

“I would feel ‘normal’, but I knew I would go back down again”

Don’t Miss: How Do You Treat Eczema

The Beginning Of Healing //

I started obsessively looking forward to my Panchakarma at Surya Spa in hopes that Ayurveda would heal my rashes. Read that post to learn all about how it helped in some significant ways, but even after the PK ended I was still inflamed AF and super uncomfortable.

It even made my PK pretty uncomfortable at times, because if you can imagine getting a hot herbal oil massage that is supposed to feel so amazing you can drift off to outer space, but youre stuck here in an ragingly itchy body having the experience.

All in all the experience was very healing for me on a mind, body, soul level but the rash still had a lot of work to do.

Meanwhile I was getting weekly or twice weekly acupuncture sessions with Dr. Kara which seemed to be helping to cool my blood but then again, only in a minor way. For what its worth, Kara has been encouraging me all along to suck it up and take the steroids, because in her words, No one should have to suffer this much.

Which is true. But I still havent done it because I am holding out to cure it naturally. I feel in my heart and soul that its possible, and I know if I take an oral steroid and it goes away then I will never know if all of the work I have been doing with the natural methods will heal me if I give it enough time, and I also have a strong feeling it would keep coming back until I addressed the root cause.

How Is Eczema Treated

If youre diagnosed with eczema, your doctor might:

  • prescribe medicines to put on the skin that soothe the redness and irritation, such as creams or ointments that contain corticosteroids
  • recommend other medicines to take by mouth if the eczema is really bad or you get it a lot

If someone has severe eczema, ultraviolet light therapy can help clear up the condition. Newer medicines that change the way the skins immune system reacts also may help.

Getting Your Skin Back On Track After A Setback

At the end of the day, treatments and home remedies are not foolproof. They may not all work for your severe eczema or you may need more than one type of treatment at the same time, according to Chiesa Fuxench.

But when it comes to handling eczema setbacks, Wall says itâs about knowing what you can control and preparing as much as you can. âI would say I can’t control the weather. But I do know if I’m traveling, I’ll have what I call my âeczema emergency kit.ââ

For Wall, when she stays at a hotel or with friends or family, she makes it a point to pack âfragrance-freeâ products and even brings her own sheets to avoid a flare-up. But even though Wall stays away from most activities that may spark her eczema, sometimes she lets herself enjoy them despite knowing the consequences.

âIt’s a moment and it’s worth it, and you just have to go with it,â Wall says.

âYou really do need to clearly establish a basic skin care regimen. Typically, I say basic and simple because we don’t really want to overburden patients with treatments,â Chiesa Fuxench says.

Ultimately, if you live with lifelong eczema, Chiesa Fuxench notes that itâs important to buy into the idea that, as with other chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension, youâll have to stay on top of your treatments.

Skin: Condition: Infomation Antibiotics And Antiseptics

How To Treat Eczema Naturally

If your AE becomes wet, weepy and crusted, it may be infected and a course of antibiotics may be needed. Antiseptics, when applied to the skin alone or as part of a moisturising preparation, can be helpful in stopping the infection. Incorrect use of antiseptics can, however, irritate the skin and make AE worse. Antiseptics should not be used continuously because this can result in excessive drying of the skin.
