How I Cured My Eczema

When Youre Miserable You Want Relief

How I Cured My Eczema

Regardless of whether your eczema is genetically determined or a result of something else, when you have eczemaor any type of dermatitisyou want to make it stop. Sufferers with any kind of skin condition want relief because skin problems and discomfort can affect concentration, sleep cycles, mood and temperament. Its hard to be happy and calm when parts of your skin are literally itching off your body, or areas of your skin are cracked and bleeding.

Eliminating Triggers And Irritants

In my 30s, after 20 years of topical steroids and an occasional injection, I realized my eczema was more than an inconvenient headache. I decided instead that it was an inconvenient allergy. I noticed that I would get red itchy bumps on my hands whenever I peeled shrimp or petted or washed the dog. So I decided I should try to eliminate possible irritants or triggers for my eczema.

First I got rid of all the scented creams and soaps. Anything that had a smell to it had to go, including dryer sheets, nail polish, and some cleaning products. I thought that if I could smell a product, it had to be bad for me.

I’m An Aesthetician Here’s How I Finally Calmed My Eczema

When people ask me what inspired me to make skin care my life, I have one word for them: eczema. Ive been struggling with itchy, painful, inflamed skin my entire life. For those of you lucky ones who dont suffer from this skin condition, heres the quick lowdown: Eczema is an inflammatory skin disorder that causes rough, red patches of itchy skin that develop blisters. Ive tried it allmonthly visits to an allergist, nightly skin icing, and countless doses of intense steroids. Ive even been hospitalized with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus infections caused by my eczema.

As an L.A. aesthetician, I have helped so many patients with painful conditions like cystic acne. But no matter what I tried, I simply couldnt calm my own eczema, which left me frustrated and feeling like my skin care knowledge was failing me!

While all my treatments and solutions provided temporary relief, I never experienced a total decrease in symptoms until I started to see a naturopath and take on a holistic approach instead.

Before I began seeing Dr. McAllister, I didnt understand what was happening to my body. I had become entrenched in a cycle of treating my symptoms without understanding the actual cause of my skin woes. According to Dr. McAllister, food sensitivities are often a leading culprit in inflammatory skin conditions. As he explains:

There Is An Excellent Alternative To Topical Creams

While there are many over the counter and prescription treatments that can alleviate the more unpleasant symptoms, there are no known medications that can get rid of eczema permanently. However, there is a homeopathic remedy that not only offers relief from symptoms, but can permanently eradicate recurring spots of eczema all over your body.

For adults with eczema, the disease can be generally well-managed with good skin care and treatment, although flare-ups of symptoms can occur throughout life.

How I Healed My Lifelong Eczema

At the start of lockdown, the eczema that Ive had all my life was at its worst ever.

I was scratching so much from head to toe that I was bleeding all over the bedsheets, flaking skin everywhere, and in so much discomfort that I felt like my skin had been burnt.

Turning my head, bending forward and lifting my arm were all painful.

A daily bath gave me an hour or so of relief as my skin softened in the water and then I slapped on moisturiser. But by the morning, it was dry again and I would inspect my body for new wounds.

Its a very strange problem because youre doing it to yourself. All you have to do is stop scratching, but you cant. Also, as anyone knows whos had a mosquito bite, it feels really pleasurable to scratch an itch. And yet youre damaging yourself. Its like an addiction.

The greatest suffering, though, was psychological. I felt:

  • disgust at how it looked and felt
  • shame that I couldnt heal it
  • despair that it would never heal
  • anxiety that it would get worse
  • frustration at how many different things Id tried to cure it, and at the medical professionals for not being able to help
  • self-hatred for not being more disciplined in sticking to the diet that I was hoping would cure it.

Which brings me to

The things I tried to heal my eczema

The NHS approach was very frustrating to me as it seemed to be entirely focused on treating the symptoms. I was told that if there was an identifiable cause, I would have found it by now.

UPDATED: How I Cured My Eczema + Tips!

I ditched the Steroid Cream & voluntarily went through withdrawal. Once I found a skincare routine that works, I stuck to it! Theres no need to experiment with new things if youve already found something natural that works for you.

If youve used steroid cream for an extended period of time, talk to your doctor about stopping. Stopping extended use of steroid cream means that you will withdraw from the drug. If you choose to quit the steroid cream and go through withdrawal, prepare to look like a molting lizard in the driest desert. Prepare to be so itchy you feel insane, and to be in pain. I broke out in multiple rashes and had chills.

It took about 3 weeks total for the withdrawals to stop. After, I looked like a whole new person. My skin was actually glowing for the first time ever and all of the eczema was gone! Until I got too excited and tried some face serum I never used before. Thats when the eczema returned on my eyelids. I obviously discontinued the use of the face serum and once again Im eczema free!

Here are some photos of my puffy, inflamed skin and face and my hives during withdrawal. The worst thing for me was not being able to open my eyes fully. My left eye was always more inflamed than the right and it made me look disproportioned and disfigured.

  • Action 1: Identify and avoid eczema triggers Emily teaches how to eliminate specific triggers , she lists ingredients to avoid, and how to use elimination diets to help your eczema.
  • Action 2: Put out the fire In Chinese medicine, nearly all eczema is seen as a manifestation of Damp Heat. Other factors will also affect the skin condition, but the Damp Heat creates the itch, red, and oozing rash. To treat Damp Heat, youll need to clear heat and drain dampness while simultaneously addressing underlying conditions. Adding cooling, bitter foods to the diet will help.
  • Action 3: Strengthen your defenses Adding beneficial microorganisms to your body and important nutrients like Vitamin D will boost your immune system.
  • Action 4: Heal your eczema with real food Emily provides fabulous information and recipes about bone broth, probiotic foods, dairy, and foods that help cleanse. I found the recipes to be well organized and easy to follow.
  • She also teaches what to do when newborns have eczema and what to do when breastfed babies get eczema. I would highly, highly recommend this self-help book for anyone suffering from the condition .

Try To Reduce The Damage From Scratching

Eczema is often itchy, and it can be very tempting to scratch the affected areas of skin.

But scratching usually damages the skin, which can itself cause more eczema to occur.

The skin eventually thickens into leathery areas as a result of chronic scratching.

Deep scratching also causes bleeding and increases the risk of your skin becoming infected or scarred.

Try to reduce scratching whenever possible. You could try gently rubbing your skin with your fingers instead.

If your baby has atopic eczema, anti-scratch mittens may stop them scratching their skin.

Keep your nails short and clean to minimise damage to the skin from unintentional scratching.

Keep your skin covered with light clothing to reduce damage from habitual scratching.

How Do You Know If It’s More Than A Skin Rash

    How I Cured My Eczema

There are as many types of skin rashes as there are remedies to clear up the symptoms. Sometimes a rash will go away quickly, and then other times it seems like nothing works to get rid of it. Not every rash requires a visit to the doctor. In many instances a strong homeopathic remedy works better than anything a doctor prescribes.

A small area of red, bumpy skin that appears with no warning is probably a localized allergic reaction. The resulting rash is easy to eliminate by limiting exposure to the allergen. A skin rash that suddenly covers a large area of the body can be a severe systemic reaction to an allergen, which may be life threatening, and should get medical attention right away.

Potatoes Are In The Nightshade Family Of Plants

Potatoes are part of a family of plants called nightshades. Named after the deadly nightshade, which got its name from having toxin levels so high its literally used in poisons. Tomatoes, peppers , eggplant, okra, tobacco, and goji berries are all in the nightshade family, and they all have varying levels of this nightshade toxin, which I surmise was the cause of my eczema.

The strange thing is, no other nightshade seems to cause eczema in me. I can have occasional tomatoes and hot sauces without having a eczema breakout. Tomato sauce on pizza seems to be okay. Perhaps tomatoes and peppers dont manifest this toxin the same way potatoes do? Perhaps theyre digested differently?

My Skin Talks To Me: Four Things That Help

Here are four things Ive learned that help me manage eczema.

    1. Listen to your skin

The minute I get an itch, I react by taking care of that itch. Sample sizes are great I recommend carrying them with you at all times in your pocket, purse, or briefcase. The topical steroids are now working for me again because Im finally using them properly.

    2. Start over

Sometimes when I get an itch and I put my meds or my creams over it, it still itches. I think I may be sealing in an irritant, so then its time to start over:

    • Wash/cleanse the area to remove all other moisturizers/creams, pollen, perfumes , dead skin, etc.
    • Soothe the skin with cool water.
    • Pat dry.
    • Apply medicine and moisturizer.

On occasion, the medicine and moisturizer burn, perhaps due to broken skin. My kids who have mild eczema sometimes complain after applying meds and creams to an itch because they burn. Start over! Rinse off, do a light pat dry, and then what Ive found that really works for me and my kids in this instance is to use an ointment type of moisturizer, like Aquaphor. I find that the irritated skin needs time to calm and heal a bit. Later in the day or the next day after bathing, apply the medicine and moisturizer.

    3. Take care of your skin everyday

Remember that a lot is not necessarily better. An even layer of moisturizer is ideal and comforting. Too much cream makes my skin itch it makes me feel like my skin cant breathe.

    4. Treat your skin like a baby
