Ideas For Controlling Eczema

Along with our homemade eczema cream here are a few things weve done to help control her eczema:

  • Cutting down on bath frequency
  • Putting her on a dairy-free diet
  • Making our own mild laundry detergent
  • Having her sleep in long pants to minimize nighttime scratching
  • Keeping her skin moisturized

To keep her skin moisturized, we have tried nearly every lotion we could find. Even with all the products weve used, Ive never found an eczema cream that did anything but give her slightly softer eczema. Many store-bought eczema creams are petroleum-based, anyway, which means theyre not environmentally friendly and not as good for skin as their marketing claims. There are greener products available, but Ive never found them particularly effective, either.

This year Ive given up on store-bought brands and am making my own homemade eczema cream for her. Im able to use natural, plant-based ingredients and have a more effective lotion, too.

Your Final Product: Homemade Excema Cream

When youre finished with your homemade eczema cream, you should have a soft, creamy lotion that smells of lavender and shea butter. It will also look exactly like buttercream frosting, but wont taste nearly as good on cupcakes.

I hope this homemade eczema cream works as well for you as it has for us!

How Are Paste Bandages And Wet Wraps Used

Viscose tubular bandages and therapeutic garments can be helpful as they hinder scratching and aid the absorption of emollients, thereby helping to control the itchscratch cycle and eczema flares. However, bandaging and wrapping should only be used under the supervision of your healthcare professional.

Bandages and wraps can be used to cover the whole body in children, but adults tend to use them only over patches of eczema.

In wet wrapping, warm, wet tubular bandages are applied to the body over a generous layer of emollient and sometimes a mild or moderately potent topical steroid . A dry layer of bandage is then placed over the wet layer. Wet wraps are particularly helpful at night as they also cool the skin.

Paste bandages for eczema come impregnated with ingredients that soothe the itch and calm irritation. There are several types of paste bandages available, such as icthopaste , viscopaste and Zipzoc , which is more like a stocking than a bandage. Paste bandages can be used for whole limbs or patches of eczema to which a normal amount of emollient and prescribed topical steroid is applied . Since paste bandages are messy, secondary bandages are necessary these also help to hold the paste bandages more securely in place.

CAUTION: Covering up the skin makes topical treatments more potent, so you should only use topical steroids under bandages and wraps as advised by your healthcare professional. Do not use paste bandages or wet wraps if your skin is infected.

How Should Eczema Cream Be Used

Baby Eczema Creams / Honest Review / 4 Products

Different eczema creams are used in different ways. How and when you apply your eczema cream will depend upon whether youre going through a flare-up, how bad your symptoms are, and where on your body the affected areas are.

If youre not going through a flare-up of symptoms, or if your eczema is very mild, you should simply use emollients. Emollients should be used every day at least twice, but ideally more often, especially if you have very dry skin. You should use a large amount and apply it all over your skin, smoothing it in the same direction your hair grows.

If you are experiencing a flare-up, you should use emollients and topical corticosteroids. Apply a layer of emollient first, wait for it to soak into the skin, and then use your corticosteroid cream or lotion. This should be applied only to the affected areas, as directed in the products patient information leaflet. Typically, you will have to apply corticosteroids once or twice a day.

Other things to consider include the following:

You should always speak to a pharmacist or doctor before you start using eczema creams, to make sure youre using the right kind at the right strength.

Emollients And Fire Safety

Lotions, creams or ointments used to moisturise your childs skin are also known as emollients.

Emollients are very effective at treating chronic dry skin conditions, such as eczema.

But it is important to be aware of the fire risk linked with them.

Emollients won’t cause a fire on their own. But if there is a build-up of emollient residue on clothing and bedding, this can quicken the speed of a fire.

Do not smoke near your baby or allow them near naked flames:

  • while they are wearing emollient
  • if they are wearing clothes or bandages that may have emollient on them

There is a fire risk with all paraffin-containing emollients. There may also even be a fire risk with paraffin-free emollients. There might also be a fire risk with other products that you put on skin over large body areas for more than a few days.

Washing clothing or fabric at a high temperature may reduce emollient build-up. But it might not totally remove it.

Eczema Treatment For Children

With a good regimen of bathing, moisturizing and prescription medications , you can help your child be more comfortable

There is no one right treatment for eczema in children. What works for another child may not work for yours. You may have to go through several treatments or combinations of treatments in partnership with your doctor before you find one that helps manage your childs symptoms. Be persistent and patient as treating eczema can take several weeks or longer before you see real progress.

How Do You Treat Eczema

There is no cure for eczema, though there are plenty of ways to treat it and keep your baby comfortable even during an intense flare up. The trick is to begin treatment of eczema as soon as signs appear. Corticosteroids are the main way to treat eczema. For mild eczema, you can find mild over-the-counter corticosteroid creams at the pharmacy, but for more severe flare-ups, youll need a referral from your doctor for a stronger corticosteroid cream.

The most important thing with treating eczema is not to scratch! This can be hard with children, so often an antihistamine medication is given to children in order to stop the itching of the rash. You could also try using pimecrolimus, a non-steroidal cream, which can be effective in treating mild-to-moderate eczema on a childs face or folds of the body.

To manage the eczema at home, make sure you keep babys baths not too hot, and keep the use of soaps to a minimum. You should also keep baths to once daily, or even wash just the bottom and face while the eczema is experiencing a flare up. It’s important to also ensure you dry your baby really well after each bath and keep the skin well moisturised.

What Kinds Of Moisturizers Are Most Effective For My Eczema

Not all moisturizers are created equal. In fact, there are many types of common moisturizers that arent good at helping control your eczema and may even make it flare or get worse. Its important to understand the differences between the three basic types of moisturizers ointments, creams, and lotions so that you can properly hydrate your skin and help keep your symptoms under control.

Moisturizers are classified based on the amount of oil and water they contain. The more oil in a moisturizer, the better it usually is at treating eczema. The best moisturizers to use are the ones that feel greasy , because they contain more oil. These are very effective at keeping moisture in and irritants out.

All moisturizers should also be applied to your hands immediately after washing and gently blotting them dry. For this reason, its a good idea to keep moisturizer near every sink in your home and carry a small tube with you at all times, so that you can reapply it throughout the day.
