Infant Milk Formula Does Not Reduce Risk Of Eczema And Allergies Says New Study

A type of baby formula does not reduce allergy risk despite previous claims to the contrary according to research led by Imperial College London.
The study, published in The BMJ, reviewed data from 37 different trials into hydrolysed baby formula a type of baby formula treated with heat to break down the milk proteins. The idea is that giving this formula to children at risk of conditions such as milk allergy and eczema, instead of standard formula, can reduce the chance of infants developing the conditions.

The US Food and Drug Administration have previously approved a manufacturers claim that a partially hydrolysed formula may reduce risk of eczema in some infants, and a Cochrane review in 2006 found limited evidence that feeding an infant hydrolysed formula may reduce risk of milk allergy in babies and children.
However the new research showed there was no statistically significant reduction in risk of these conditions amongst babies using hydrolysed formula. The paper also revealed conflicts of interest in many of the studies due to financial links with baby formula manufacturers.
In the paper, which was funded by the UK Food Standards Agency, the team analysed studies that included over 19,000 participants. This new study is the most complete and robust assessment of all the evidence to date, says Dr Boyle.
Confirmed Lactose Intolerance Now What
If your doctor has determined that your child indeed is lactose intolerant, then you and your baby will be put on a lactose-free diet. Note: cows milk is also used in the production of cookies or margarine, for example. Always consult your doctor or a dietician for help!
Your baby will receive special formula in which the proteins are cut into smaller pieces so that their immune system does not recognize them as such. Doctors do not recommend soy milk as an alternative for children under 1 year old. Alternatives such as goats milk, sheeps milk, and almond milk are not recommended for lactose intolerant children under 6 months old.
Most babies outgrow their lactose intolerance, often before their first birthday. When children are 3 years old, an impressive 90% of them have outgrown their allergies. That is why it is important to keep testing the allergic reactions on a regular basis!

How Is Baby Eczema Treated
Treatment varies for baby eczema based on what caused your childs symptoms to flare up and the severity of their symptoms. Treatment for baby eczema could include:
- Eliminating or avoiding triggers: Avoid scented or fragranced soaps, lotions or detergents. These things can cause eczema to flare. Your provider might test your babys skin to identify if theyre allergic to certain things in their environment that they contact regularly. If youre able to identify what causes your babys eczema triggers, avoiding those causes helps your babys skin heal and prevents future eczema flare-ups.
- Using topical corticosteroids: These are prescription-strength ointments that you rub on your babys skin like a lotion. Corticosteroids help reduce itching and swelling. For mild eczema, apply topical OTC 1% hydrocortisone ointment twice a day for no longer than two weeks. For moderate to severe eczema, your healthcare provider may recommend prescription-strength steroid ointments. Any steroid ointment should not be applied for longer than two weeks since it may lead to discoloration by thinning out the skin.
- Applying moisturizer to your babys skin: Keeping your babys skin hydrated can reduce symptoms, soothe their skin, remove discomfort and prevent flare-ups. Choose moisturizers designed for babies and products that dont contain fragrances. The best time to apply moisturizers to your babys skin is after a bath and a couple of times throughout the day when their skin appears dry.
An Introduction To Dairy Substitutes
Milk products arent always obvious in ingredients lists: whey and caseinates should definitely be avoided as they are proteins lactose is a sugar so far less likely to cause eczema. Cooking from scratch is the easiest way to be sure that food is dairy-free.
Milk: There are a number of non-dairy alternatives to milk readily available in supermarkets and health-food shops. The best known is soya milk but there are also almond, oat, hemp, coconut and sunflower based milks available. Both soya and almond milks are available as fortified infant and follow-on formulas. The flavours of these milks vary hugely, even different brands of the same milk can taste incredibly different, so its worth experimenting. Milk substitutes are less versatile than their dairy equivalent, so you may find that using a combination of milk works better for you. While rice milks are available there are concerns about the levels of arsenic occurring in rice milk and current government advice is that it should not be given to under-5s.
