Aquaphor And Maalox For Eczema

Both Aquaphor And Vaseline Help Moisturizers Work Better

An occlusive moisturizer blocks water loss from the skin by creating a barrier. Both Aquaphor and Vaseline can help trap existing moisture into the skin, but Vaseline is best used over a humectant moisturizer, which pulls moisture in from the environment, to keep the moisture locked into the skin.

Aquaphor contains other ingredients like glycerin, which acts as a humectant to keep skin moisturized from the outside in.

Eczema : The Basics Of Managing Your Child’s Itchy Rashy Skin

The type of moisturizer you select is very important. It is best to use an ointment or a heavy cream . Lotions are undesirable because they contain more water and tend to contain more preservatives and ingredients that can sting on open skin or cause irritation. In general, moisturizer should be applied to the skin at least twice daily, but more often if your child’s skin seems unusually dry or if their eczema is more severe. If you have been given prescription topical medications for your child’s eczema, those products should be applied sparingly to the affected areas prior to the application of moisturizer. I typically recommend application of topical medications twice daily, but you should follow the instructions given by your child’s doctor.

Aquaphor Is Not Vaseline

Most new users of Aquaphor oftentimes mistake it as Vaseline. They both do feel somewhat slick and have a gel consistency, but the two products couldnt be more different. Theyre, however, both petroleum-based, but its Vaseline thats 100 percent petroleum. This means that when Vaseline is applied to the skin it works by both blocking moistures in and out of the skin. You can find out more about how vaseline treats eczema in an article I wrote here.

Aquaphor, on the other hand, works in a completely different manner. Its only 41 percent petroleum-based and this allows it to create a semi-occlusive barrier when applied to the skin. What this means is that the moisture in the air can still reach passed the ointments and be drawn into the skin. Due to the fact that it doesnt contain as much petroleum, it also gives water and oxygen the ability to circulate into the skin. This pretty much means that when Aquaphor is applied to the skin it actually helps heal the wound by providing a protective, moist healing barrier.

Wrap It Up: Skin Strategies For Little Kids

Parents have seen that when it comes to babies skin, the diaper area tends to be the smoothest and most hydrated. When it comes to babies with atopic dermatitis, more often than not, we often see that their skin can be the best in the diaper area. If we could diaper the whole body, then kids suffering with atopic dermatitis would do really well. But since we cant diaper the whole body, what we need to do is come up with other ways to compensate by providing a physical barrier for that inherently impaired atopic dermatitis skin.

Everybody has to try different things and decide what works for them, but I like plastic wrap for focal rashes. I dont suggest securing the wrap onto the skin with tape because a lot of kids can develop allergies to the adhesive in tape itself. In order to conceal the plastic wrap and make the look more fun for kids, covering the wrap with colorful duct tape sold at hardware stores helps disguise the weird-looking wrap, possibly creating something kids might be willing to wear to school.

Reactive Or Inflammatory Skin Conditions

Hives

Hives, or urticaria, is a reactive rash that can have many causes. The rash may occur as a reaction to food, medication, or additives to food. Hives also can occur due to heat, cold, exercise, sunlight, stress, and underlying illness. Viruses and bacterial infections can cause hives. Hives also occur, idiopathically, meaning we cannot identify the cause.

Hives are pink or red bumps or welts. They can be small or large. Sometimes they look like there is bruising under the hives. Depending on the cause, hives can last for hours or for days. Some people suffer from chronic hives.

Hives are treated with antihistamines including Benadryl, Zyrtec, or Allegra to reduce the itching. Depending on the cause and duration of the hives, additional treatment and evaluation may be necessary.

Also, for hives due to bacterial illness, such as strep throat or mycoplasma pneumonia, addressing and treating the underlying cause will treat the hives.

For hives caused by environmental factors, avoiding those triggers, such as offending foods and ingredients, stress, temperature extremes, and sunlight, will reduce urticaria outbreaks.

Heat Rash

Poison Ivy

If your child comes across poison ivy or other plants that cause rashes, wash the areas with soap and water for 10 minutes. Make sure to trim fingernails and clean under nails as any oil present under the nails can continue to spread the rash. Additionally, all clothing should be washed in hot water and soap.

Is Mylanta The Same As Maalox

Both brands contain the same active ingredients, so whichever is available to you can be used to make the DIY magic butt paste. Do NOT use any flavored kind, especially mint-flavored.

Mylanta and Maalox both contain 200 mg aluminum hydroxide, 200 mg magnesium hydroxide, and 20 mg simethicone per 5 ml.

If Maalox is unavailable where you live, you can use Milk of Magnesia or a generic brand of liquid antacid. We actually did use a generic brand. Just be sure to ask the pharmacist to make sure it has the same ingredients as Maalox.

Believe me, I know it sounds like an off the wall idea to use Maalox for diaper rash. I get that! But from one mom to another, I want to let you know how amazing a remedy it was for us.

Our little guy was as good as new in no time flat after we tried this magic butt paste. As much I thought it was an off the wall idea, when the doctor recommended it I was willing to give it a try and Im so happy I did.

So, if you are at your wits end as we were, have tried every diaper cream out there and nothing is helping, I highly suggest giving it a shot.

Your baby will thank you and be so much more comfortable with a rash-free bottom. As moms, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that a happy, healthy baby is a joy to behold. And when baby is happy, everyone is happy.

An Increased Itch Factor

People with atopic dermatitis skin are fundamentally more physically sensitive to sensations and itch. Over the years, publications have shown that with atopic dermatitis, you may have increased proteins that signal for itch and increased nerve endings that help pick up the itch sensation and transmit that sensation to your brain.

Treatment Of Atopic Dermatitis

Therapeutic measures are individualized according to the morphology of the skin lesions, distribution of the rash, and age of the patient. Infants, for instance, may benefit from aggressive efforts to protect their skin from environmental irritants and scratching. Loose-fitting cotton clothing with long sleeves and foot coverings may be optimal.

Although bathing and the use of soaps was once believed to exacerbate atopic dermatitis, increasing evidence contradicts this view. Daily swimming or baths in the summer and on alternating days in winter, followed by liberal application of lubricants, help to cleanse and hydrate the skin. Emollients are tailored to the patient to increase compliance. In general, greasy, occlusive preparations are safest and most effective. However, some patients may prefer less occlusive agents. Mild cleansers may help to reduce bacterial colonization and the risk of secondary infection. Their use should be restricted to areas in which bacteria are most likely to thrive, such as the groin, axilla, and umbilicus.

Peoples Pharmacy: Milk Of Magnesia Relieves Swamp Rash

Tue., June 7, 2016

Q. Years ago, I had a friend who was just miserable with a rash from his groin down. He worked in the Great Dismal Swamp, so he had to wear high waders all day long. I told him to try milk of magnesia .

It was life-changing for him. He passed the word around to all of his co-workers. MoM made their lives much nicer.

Just recently, I broke out with eczema on my hand and arm. My doctor said that it is stress-related, since my husband was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.

I was prescribed a steroid cream for the eczema, but it didnt help at all. I tried MoM, and its been a wonderful relief. I apply it twice a day. I am grateful that this works so well, and also that my husband is doing well with his chemo.

A. Milk of magnesia is a liquid laxative containing magnesium hydroxide. It has been used topically as a treatment for seborrheic dermatitis, diaper rash, acne, underarm odor, poison ivy, under-breast rash and canker sores.

These all are off-label uses, since the Food and Drug Administration has not approved MoM for any of these purposes. Nevertheless, milk of magnesia may make the skin less hospitable to microbes that aggravate a variety of skin problems.

Q. I have been taking Januvia for diabetes for eight months. Ever since I started, every joint has hurt. The pain became worse as time went on.

My doctor says acid-suppressing drugs are fine he takes one too. But as I age, I worry more about my kidneys, so Ive decided to go off the medicine.

How Quickly Will Maalox Work For Diaper Rash

Great for diaper rash...usually better than Desitin

When we discovered this magic home remedy, it was the answer to our prayers. We saw an improvement within the first few hours and in a matter of around 2-3 days it was completely healed.

So if you feel like youve tried everything under the sun as far as store-bought diaper creams and ointments, but nothing seems to be working, give this home remedy a go. Every mom I have talked to that has tried it has had great success. Even pediatric nurses recommend it!

The rash should clear up in a few days. If you do not see any improvement after 2-3 days, consult your doctor. You shouldnt use this remedy for an extended period of time or as a daily routine. But in our experience, you really wont need to use it for more than a few days.

Can Vaseline Or Aquaphor Make Eczema Worse

Sometimes I get questions about if vaseline makes eczema worse. I will tell you from personal experience that it did not. It was actually very helpful. I will use Vaseline or Aquaphor after bath time to lock in the moisture and then use a moisturizer. I personally did not have issues with Aquphor, but because it contains lanolin, it MAY cause some skin sensitivity. Its always important to do a patch test .

Whats Better: Aquaphor Vs Vaseline

The Greasy Factor: Vaseline is a pure petrolatum , which can leave a thick and greasy feeling. Some people do not like this. On the other hand, Aquaphor is easier to apply and less greasy. It is still greasier than lotion or creams, but this is important to lock in moisture.

Wound healing : Both Aquaphor vs Vaseline are good for wound healing, but Vaseline may cause less irritation .

Skin Reaction : Vaseline is less likely to cause a skin reaction. Aquaphor Healing Ointment can cause redness and swelling due to lanolin . owing to the added ingredients that may cause a hypersensitivity or allergic reaction.

Price : Vaseline is generally cheaper than Aquaphor.

The Winner: Regarding Aquaphor vs Vaseline, I would say Vaseline is better for eczema and in general. I have used Aquaphor for my children and did not have issues. I have alternated between both, but ultimately I did opt for Vaseline due to the price point.

What Is Aquaphor Healing

There are many brands and forms of petrolatum topical available. Not all brands are listed on this leaflet.
