I Use A Botanical Face Oil At Night

I prefer hypoallergenic eczema-friendly botanical oils.

The CDC recommends that hand sanitizers contain at least 60 percent alcohol, but Desai says he opts for at least 70 percent alcohol content. There’s a reason why hand eczema can get worse for some people in response to extreme weather like the frigid conditions of wintertime.
“Dry, cold air can pull away moisture from your skin,” says Ilyas.
Fishman and Ilyas agree that wearing gloves or mittens can help protect your skin and prevent this from happening. Wool and some synthetic fabrics can make itching worse, so opt for cotton or silk gloves instead.
Using a humidifier in your home during the dryer months may also prove helpful.
Dont Rinse With Hot Water
When washing your hands, use water that is no hotter than lukewarm, Dr. Elbuluk advises people with eczema. The hotter your water is, the more it actually dries out your skin. Contrary to popular belief, you dont need hot water to kill germs. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Food Protection, water temperature makes no difference in washing effectiveness.

Related Conditions And Causes Of Dyshidrotic Eczema
As mentioned, atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis, especially when related to a nickel allergy, can increase your risk of having dyshidrotic eczema, according to the AAD.
Differentiating between the conditions can be a challenge, and sometimes they are related anyway, says Kindred. Atopic dermatitis prefers skin folds, such as the insides of the elbows and the knees. Contact dermatitis is usually within the location that the skin was in contact with the trigger. The confusing part is that both atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis may be associated with dyshidrotic eczema, confusing the picture.

Other over-the-counter products that can be effective are those that are specifically labeled for dry hands. Make sure to use a moisturizer that doesn’t cause additional irritation.
Topical corticosteroid creams and ointments may also be used. They are effective treatments for severe or persistent contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, or dyshidrotic dermatitis.

What If My Hands Are Already Damaged Dry Or Cracking
Treat hand dermatitis as soon as it occurs, otherwise it will get worse. If you think youve lost your nail cuticle , water will be able to seep into the nail fold, causing swelling and dermatitis.
Use petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, as a sealant to prevent further water damage. Petroleum jelly can also be used on skin cracks for the same reason.

Some Basic Things You Can Do At Work To Help Control Your Hand Eczema:
- Avoid allergens or irritating substances in products you use on the job like industrial hand cleansers or waterless, antibacterial cleansers that may trigger your hand eczema, or make it worse. These often contain ingredients like alcohol and solvents, that are very hard on your hands, especially during flare-ups.
- Protect your hands at work with a combination of heavy-duty vinyl or neoprene gloves and cotton glove liners. Regularly wash cotton liners and vinyl gloves if they arent disposable.
- Always carry your own hand cleanser, moisturizer and medication with you, wherever you go.
- Keep your clothes, protective gear, tools and work surfaces clean and free of residue from irritating substances.
- Treat wounds on your hands and bandage them in order to avoid irritation from allergens or chemical substances.
Your doctor may also prescribe a barrier repair cream, or topical steroid to help speed up healing.
Tips To Treat Hand Eczema
1. If you have a full flare of hand eczema, moisturizer alone is not going to be enough. You need to shut down the underlying inflammation by applying high potency steroids along with thick moisturizers .
Do not use moisturizers that are lotion or creams, because they have surfactants, emulsifiers, and preservatives. These agents can irritate the skin causing stinging, pain and worsening the hand dermatitis.
Also, limit the frequency and duration of steroids use to the hands. If you notice the hand eczema is improving, slowly taper the steroids, meaning use less amount and apply less frequently.
2. Before going to sleep, soak hands in lukewarm water to soften the skin a bit. Pat the hands dry with a towel. Do not rub the hands vigorously with the towel. Do not over dry it either.
Apply a thick layer of ointment or balm to coat the whole hands. Wear cotton gloves to bed. This combination traps the water, moisture and natural lipids/oil to hands.
3. Consider getting a patch test to make sure you have no new allergies.
4. Watch out for potential infection. If your hands are red, swollen, or hot to touch, you may have an infection. Consider seeing your physician as you may need antibiotics.
