The Scratchsleeves Familys Tried And Tested Eczema Friendly Laundry Detergents

RECIPE ~ Best Homemade Laundry Soap | Vegan | Eco-friendly | Eczema Safe

Over the last few months weve been testing three different brands of eczema friendly laundry detergents in our regular washing: Skin Salveation Laundry powder, Surcare and Skinnies Laundry Powder and Liquid. While this comparison of the best laundry detergent for eczema is by not in any way scientific, we hope that our familys experience will be useful to your family. And now? We loved both the Skin Salveation and Skinnies Laundry washing powder that are suitable for eczema babies . At the moment we are using the Skin Salvaeation Laundry Powder, largely because we also use their Dermasalve range so the postage works out better that way.

Laundry Tips For People With Eczema

How you do your laundry is as important as the chemicals in your detergent. Help protect your skin from flare-ups by following these strategies.

For many of us, doing laundry is automatic, and we treat it as a simple chore to check off our to-do list. But if youre managing eczema, you may want to put some extra thought into how you wash your clothes and what you use to do so.

The wrong laundry product can be a real nightmare for someone with eczema, says Jeffrey M. Cohen, MD, a dermatologist and an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Some laundry products have chemicals that can be irritating to the skin, and any irritation to the skin can trigger eczema, Dr. Cohen says. This can lead to itching, burning, redness, and other symptoms, according to the National Eczema Association.

While laundry products may not be the biggest eczema triggers, they are potential contributors, says Peter Lio, MD, a dermatologist, a cofounder of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center, and a board member for the National Eczema Association. When we’re trying to get irritated skin calmed down, every little bit can help. So it is often worthwhile to get the low-hanging fruit, so to speak, and that includes laundry products, Dr. Lio says.

Review Of Liquid Fragrance

Homemade laundry detergent

While the most convenient to use, pods are generally more expensive per load. We like liquid detergent because its:

  • Convenient for pre-treating
  • Dissolves easily in any water temperature

We have reviewed and tested fragrance-free detergents based on how well it cleans garments and the packaging functionality. For example, does the nozzle drip , and does it come in environmentally-friendly packaging? It is also worth noting that some manufacturers can be somewhat creative in calculating the number of loads. So dont blindly trust the number of loads on the packaging.

Todays store shelves are crammed with laundry detergents, including an increasing number of fragrance-free detergents. To assist you in choosing the best fragrance-free liquid detergent, weve compiled a list of the top 7 fragrance-free laundry detergents for sensitive skin.

Keeping Whites Well White

Now, if youve never used natural laundry products before, you need to know straight away that they do not whiten and brighten your clothing as commercial detergents do. It takes chemicals to do that job really well. There are some more natural things you can add to the wash to help, like adding lemon juice or a natural product with powdered hydroxide like Honest Oxy Boost Free & Clear. But once you go the natural route, your whites will never stay white long-term. So, I just dont buy anything white anymore. Problem solved. Ill take less skin irritation over white clothing any day. Wouldnt you?

What Makes A Good Eczema Laundry Detergent

It is easy to be swayed by marketing techniques used by lots of different brands when it comes to persuading buyers into making a purchase, but what really determines whether or not a laundry detergent will be good for your eczema and sensitive skin?

Look at the labels and find out more about your purchase by looking for these specific features.

  • Fragrance-Free. Often, we associate pleasant scents with cleanness. Many laundry soaps and detergents come in a variety of scents and fragrances that promise to last for hours throughout the day. Of course, this can make wearing clothes and using linens much more pleasant however, there is a downside to too much fragrance.

The chemicals used in laundry detergents for the purpose of adding pleasant scents can negatively react with sensitive skin types. If you have eczema, you probably try to avoid products like scented lotions, perfumes, colognes, and other fragrances because they cause flare ups.

In the same way, detergents that have these ingredients are likely to trigger and exacerbate eczema. So, looking for a fragrance-free alternative will help guarantee that your skin condition will be properly managed.

  • Liquid Formulation. Check the hypoallergenic laundry detergents in your local grocery store and it is possible that you will have a hard time finding anything that isnt in liquid form. Thats because powders and detergent bars are more likely to leave residue on clothes.

Use Soapnuts Instead Of Laundry Detergent

â¨Laundry Room/MAKEOVER/$100 BUDGETð®ð?â¨#laundryroommakeoveronabudget

If you have been following Stay at Home Mum for a few years, you will know all about my passion for Soapnuts. They have then dried out remains of a berry that soap up when mixed with water. They are totally natural, very gentle and so cheap it works out to cost less than 5c per wash. But they are probably the MOST gentle detergent out there when it comes to sensitive skin. Plus you can use them to make shampoo, dishwasher cleaner and a homemade spray and wipe spray.

The only Con in using Soapnuts is that they arent Strong so really heavy stains wont come out just using Soapnuts however, if you just have lightly worn clothing that needs washing Soapnuts are perfect!

All Free and Clear is created with the same stain removal properties as the regular one but without the added fragrance and dye. It is also recognized by the NEA for use in eczema-prone skin. The product is biodegradable and the container is made up of recycled plastic!

I came across other brands such as Clorox 2 Free and Clear , Arm & Hammer Free and Clear and Purex Natural Elements , which unfortunately were not the best products for dermatitis. I found that either their EWG scores were concerning or there were lawsuits associated with their products. For these reasons, I did not promote those brands.

Other Detergents For Sensitive Skin We Tested

Ingredients of concern: Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate

All Free Clear is probably the most popular brand in our roundup. In fact, All claims it is the number one recommended brand by dermatologists and pediatricians.

We also found that it is one of the detergents with the highest user ratings, with thousands of five-star reviews across multiple online retailers. Going over the ingredients, we can see why.

Of all the detergents we researched and tested, All had the second-fewest skin irritating. The major cleaning agents are C12-15 Pareth-9 and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Pareth-9 has been labeled non-irritating by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panela consumer safety group that includes dermatologists and toxicologists.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate, sometimes known as SLES, is of bigger concern. Multiple studies have shown it to be a known irritant that can cause allergic reactions.

On a more positive note, our testers found that it also has one of the most neutral scents. If youve ever found the smell of detergent to be overwhelming, All has you covered. On the stain removal front, it fell into the middle of the pack, removing an average of 71.8% of all stains. It did exceptionally well against protein stains, but lagged behind when it came to oil.

Skip Fabric Softener And Dryer Sheets

Fabric softener and dryer sheets are almost always fragranced, which can trigger eczema, says Cohen. In addition, these products introduce more chemicals that someone could potentially be allergic to, Cohen adds.

Fabric softeners may contain methylisothiazolinone, a common allergen that can cause real trouble for the skin, says Lio. When in doubt, avoid both fabric softener and dryer sheets.

One past study found that fabric softeners helped some people with dry skin because they made clothes soft to the touch . Instead of going the fabric softener route, consider buying clothes made of softer fabrics .
