Aquaphor Healing Ointment $16

Eczema- How to Treat & Get Rid of It

Dr. Libby adores Aquaphors Healing Ointment as one of the best eczema ointments because its an occlusive moisturizer to seal in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss from the skin. Not to mention, its relatively affordable at less than $20.

Both Dr. Chan and Dr. Mack recommend this as one of her favorite eczema ointments, too. Formulated with 41% petrolatum, glycerin and panthenol, Aquaphor helps to repair dry, cracked skin in the setting of eczema, Dr. Mack adds. Its also preservative and fragrance-free, helping to minimize the risk of allergic contact dermatitis.

What Ingredients Are Best To Help Treat Eczema

Eczema is a clinical dysfunction of the skin barrier, Dr. Libby notes. As such, genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors contribute to its flare-up, but its a priority to repair the skin barrier. Namely, ingredients to help reverse eczematic effects are humectants, emollients and occlusive moisturizers.

According to Dr. Libby, humectants help add moisture back to the skin, while emollients add back oils, lubricating and softening the skin. Occlusive moisturizers work to prevent transepidermal water loss .

Common humectants are glycerin, lactic acid, urea and hyaluronic acid, Dr. Libby adds. Emollients examples are glycol and glyceryl stearate, soy sterols, squalane, and oils like jojoba, sweet almond, etc. Common occlusives are petrolatum, dimethicone, shea butter and mineral oil.

What Products Should I Avoid If I Have Eczema

You should avoid any ingredients that you have a known allergy to and anything that has irritated your skin previously, Dr. Chan said. Common products that can do this are acne products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I also would avoid high percentage AHAs.

Be sure to note that developing a skin allergy is higher when you have atopic dermatitis, so avoiding fragrance when you can is a good idea, especially during an active flare.

Are There Different Types Of Eczema

There are a lot of different kinds of eczema, explains board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara. While most eczema will be treated relatively the same way, a quick trip to your doctor can help identify the specific type of eczema youre dealing with. Nummular eczema appears as round, red, and scaly plaques and most commonly presents on the arms and legs, says Dr. Greenfield. Dyshidrotic eczema shows up as small fluid filled vesicles on the fingers and toes on the hands and feet. Theres also atopic dermatitis, which is a bumpy rash thats very common in babies.

Eczema. Even the word sounds irritating, like an itch we want to scratch .

Especially so during the winter, when the cold temps have us reaching for the best dry skin products under the sun or the best body lotions known to man.

But, with eczema comes the urgency for near-instantaneous relief. Smooth skin is the goal, but product choices usually have to be specific to sensitive skin types and, of course, must be effective to head toward smoother skin.

Some signs that eczema is starting to occur is if your skin is feeling dry, rough, red or flaky,Tiffany Libby, MD, FAAD, FACMS, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Brown Dermatology in Rhode Island, told the Post. Oatmeal: good for cookies *and* good for your skin.

Side note, here is a recipe for oatmeal cookies. Make them ASAP. Youre welcome! ?

Colloidal oatmeal is a common moisturizing ingredient in skin care products, and my dry skin and I are definitely fans . Its main jobs are to protect and soothe skin and to prevent water loss. Its the active ingredient in a couple of things I love from this new-to-me line Im trying called SkinFix.

This clean brand burst onto the beauty scene in 2019, and theyre known for uber-moisturizing products that focus on protecting and hydrating the skin barrier. You might recognize their Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream it won an Allure Best Of Beauty Award in 2019.

If you continually fight the good fight against dry skin, firstly, welcome to my world. Secondly, Ive found a couple things from the line you might like.

Yup, they both have colloidal oatmeal!

Ive been LIVING for the Eczema+ Dermatitis Face Balm, which has 5% colloidal oatmeal as its active ingredient.

Its a rich, soothing balm that you can use all over your face, even around your eyes and lids, to protect and relieve irritated skin, rashes and eczema. I dont suffer from eczema however, sometimes I do get dry, red patches at the corners of my eyes and on my lids, and this is the only balm that doesnt cause me to break out in those areas. LOVE IT.

OK, raise your hand if taming flyaway baby hairs takes up an inordinate amount of time in your day!

Skinfix Dermatitis Face Balm

Over the summer I had gotten my makeup done at Sephora and actually had my eczema flair up around my eyes. I had mentioned this to the sales associate and she quickly grabbed Skinfixs Dermatitis Face Balm. I didnt notice any immediate improvement, but my makeup sat nicely on my skin around my eyes, so I thought it had worked. Sephora was having a 20% off sale at the end of August, so this was the first thing added to my cart!

I was excited to see a product like this being sold in because Ive used multiple eye creams to try and combat my eczema and nothing has worked. I didnt expect this to work immediately, unlike my Hydrocortisone cream that works like magic , but honestly, over the past couple of months, it hasnt improved my eczema at all, or even soothed it.

I applied a thin layer of Skinfixs Dermatitis Face Balm on my eyelids and around my eyes before going to bed so it can really soak into my skin, and so I can wear makeup the next day. Honestly, my eczema didnt clear up or even look any better. My skin was still flaky, and painful where it cracked. I thought if it was hydrated overnight that it would at least get rid of any redness..

Honestly, this product does have good reviews, so it probably just doesnt work well with my skin. I supposed I wouldnt recommend this because it didnt work for me.. but I would suggest going to Sephora and getting a sample so you can try it out before purchasing.
