How Can I Reduce My Risk Of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Theres little that can be done to prevent seborrheic dermatitis. Cradle cap is a natural, harmless condition. It can be simply treated at home. If you are a teenager or an adult with seborrheic dermatitis, you might be more prone if you have higher than normal levels of androgens, a higher level of lipids in your skin or have an overgrowth of the yeast that is always present on your skins surface.

Some simple healthy things you can do to reduce your risk include getting plenty of rest, controlling your emotional stress and getting a daily small doses of sunshine . Stay away from the midday sun.

Always follow your healthcare providers instructions for using medicated shampoos and skin products. Under treatment or inappropriate treatment can result in flare-ups of your condition and return visits to your healthcare provider.

Which One Do You Have

Unsure if the issue is dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis? Check for simple signs. Dandruff will appear as white, oily flakes at the root of the scalp. In most cases, dandruff may not cause itching. So a pharmacist can prescribe a medicated shampoo. However, if the flakes come with scaly patches on the scalp, this could be a sign of seborrheic dermatitis. Red patches around the nose and oily, tender skin are other early signs. Some cases may need stronger treatment like a corticosteroid. Seek help immediately if these symptoms pop up.

Treatment Of Scalp And Beard Areas

Many cases of seborrheic dermatitis are effectively treated by shampooing daily or every other day with antidandruff shampoos containing 2.5 percent selenium sulfide or 1 to 2 percent pyrithione zinc. Alternatively, ketoconazole shampoo may be used.10 The shampoo should be applied to the scalp and beard areas and left in place for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. A moisturizing shampoo may be used afterward to prevent dessication of the hair. After the disease is under control, the frequency of shampooing with medicated shampoos may be decreased to twice weekly or as needed. Topical terbinafine solution, 1 percent, has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of scalp seborrhea.11

If the scalp is covered with diffuse, dense scale, the scale may first be removed by applying warm mineral oil or olive oil to the scalp and washing several hours later with a detergent such as a dishwashing liquid or a tar shampoo.12 An alternative is an overnight application of a coal tarkeratolytic combination or phenol-saline solution with or without occlusion with a plastic shower cap followed by shampooing in the morning.13

Infants frequently have seborrheic dermatitis, commonly known as cradle cap. Areas of possible involvement include the scalp, face and intertriginous areas. Involvement may be extensive, but this disorder frequently clears spontaneously by six to 12 months of age and does not recur until the onset of puberty.

Treatment Of The Face

Involved areas of the face may be washed frequently with shampoos that are effective against seborrhea as detailed above. Alternatively, ketoconazole cream, 2 percent, may be applied once or twice daily to affected areas. Often, 1 percent hydrocortisone cream will be added once or twice daily to affected areas and will aid with resolution of erythema and itching. Sodium sulfacetamide, 10 percent lotion, is also an effective topical agent for seborrheic dermatitis.

Ingredients: Less Is More

Most shampoos youâll find in stores lean toward flowery, fruity, and fragrant. But shampoos loaded with botanical ingredients and scents can make your eczema worse, no matter how nice they smell.

Because your scalp is more likely to get irritated than most other peopleâs, your shampoo should have fewer additives that might rile up that tender skin. If you look for shampoos that have fewer ingredients, you may sidestep much of the trial and error that can come with the quest for the right shampoo.

Bear in mind âunscentedâ and âfragrance-freeâ arenât the same. âUnscentedâ means somethingâs been added to the product to mask the smell. âFragrance-freeâ means no ingredients in the shampoo should have a scent.

Ringworm Of The Scalp Or Beard

According to the University of Michigan, washing with a formulation of Head & amp Shoulders that contains selenium sulfide can prevent ringworm on the scalp or head. Ringworm is caused by a fungus, and selenium sulfide kills it and prevents it from spreading to other people. Only Head & amp Shoulders Intensive Treatment contains selenium, not the regular formula.

It should be used once a month, or as recommended by your doctor, if any member of your household has had ringworm recently. The treatment for ringworm should be implemented under the supervision of your doctor who may prescribe other medications besides shampoo.

Is There A Cure For Seborrheic Dermatitis

Pin on Fast Growing Grape Vines

Seborrheic dermatitis is essentially a more severe form of dandruff. We know that medicated shampoos can keep it under control, but is there actually a cure for the condition?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that affects areas of the body that produce sebum, one of which is the scalp.

There are many factors that influence the development of the condition, such as genetic and hormonal influences as well as naturally occurring microbes that live on the skin.

Seborrheic dermatitis does not have a cureItâs what we call a recurring condition â just like dandruff.

So, while you can effectively control it and treat all the symptoms, unfortunately it cannot be completely cured.

Itâs possible to get rid of the symptoms for goodJust because it canât be cured, it doesnât mean youâll have to put up with the symptoms forever. Use the right treatment regularly and you can help keep all the symptoms away â and as long you keep on using it, you can stop them from coming back.

Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength Shampoo is specially formulated to tackle seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.

It differs from our normal, effective dandruff shampoos as it contains the active ingredient selenium sulfide and has been shown to give prescription-strength flake protection1.

What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis

As with many of the types of eczema, the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown. However, doctors believe there are two possible causes:

  • A yeast called malassezia thats found in the skins sebum
  • An irregular immune system response
  • In fact, these two potential causes are related, because when malassezia overgrows in the skin microbiome, it seems to cause an immune system response.

    What Causes Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

how I CURED ECZEMA / DERMATITIS washing my face with COCONUT OIL

The exact causes of seborrhoeic dermatitis are not fully understood. Its thought that in people with this condition, the body reacts badly to a certain type of yeast living on the skin. In most people malassezia yeast is completely harmless, and a normal part of healthy skin flora but in people with seborrhoeic dermatitis, its presence can trigger symptoms.

As with any type of eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis is not caused by being unclean. It is not a contagious condition, so you dont need to worry about passing it on to anyone else.

    How Is Seborrheic Dermatitis Treated

In teenagers and adults, seborrheic dermatitis usually doesnt disappear on its own without treatment. Type of treatment depends on the area of the body that is affected and how severe your condition is.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the visible signs of seborrheic dermatitis and itching and redness. Treatment includes use of over-the-counter products and prescription products. Prescription products include topical antifungals, calcineurin inhibitors and corticosteroids. Ongoing maintenance treatment is often needed. You may need to use a combination of these treatments:

    Scalp Treatment

    • Cradle cap usually clears up without treatment when the child is between eight and 12 months old. It may be treated daily with a mild baby shampoo.
    • Massage or brush the scalp with a soft brush several times a day and after each shampoo. Be careful not to cause a break in the skin, which can lead to infection.
    • If the problem continues, or the baby seems uncomfortable and scratches the scalp, contact your pediatrician or dermatologist. He or she may prescribe a prescription shampoo or lotion.
    • Other areas of affected skin may be treated with a gentle steroid lotion.

    Adolescents and adults:

For moderate to severe cases, your healthcare provider may prescribe a shampoo containing betamethasone valerate , clobetasol , fluocinolone or fluocinolone solution . Shampoo your hair as directed. Some products are used daily, others are used twice daily for two weeks then two times a week.

    Eczema On Legs & Arms

While behind your knees and inside your elbows are the most likely areas to get red and itchy patches, the rest of your arms and legs might also experience eczema. The good news is that because sweat doesnt collect as much everywhere else, eczema on your limbs is often temporary and less severe if its outside of the creases.

Gently cleaning, steering clear of hot water and temperatures that could exacerbate skin irritation even further, and creams or ointments to relieve the area all apply to this type of eczema. As with other treatments, if they dont work or youre worried that you dont know how to specifically treat it, talk to a doctor and get their advice.

    • Clothing materials that might aggravate your skin

The 6 Most Common Types Of Eczema And How To Treat Them

    Your dandruff actually counts.

The term “eczema” comes from a Greek word meaning “to boil over,” and the etymology is pretty spot-on. This group of conditions involving red, itchy, and inflamed skin can become both uncomfortable and embarrassing, but they’re also manageable most of the time.

The flare-ups may appear similar at first glance, but dermatologists actually treat six different kinds of eczema: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis.

No matter which type you have, all patients should practice gentle skin care, advises dermatologist Dr. Tina Bhutani of the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. That involves moisturizing regularly and taking short, lukewarm showers. If your fingers prune up, you’re likely in there too long.

Use plain, fragrance-free soap like Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser or Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar only on the visibly dirty areas of your body and folds like your armpits and groin. “Your skin makes natural soaps,” Dr. Bhutani explains. “When we use external soap, we’re overdoing it.”

Then apply lotion all over from a tub not a pump no more than three minutes after you get out of the shower. You won’t experience that squeaky clean feeling you might be used to, but that sensation is actually a sign you’ve dried out your skin too much, she says.

The treatment: A topical cream can also help with this seasonal condition.
