What Is Good For Baby Eczema

How We Chose The Best Baby Eczema Creams

Baby Eczema Q& A, treatment & tips from a leading Dermatolgist!

So, how do you know which creams are more likely to be effective? Youll want to look for one that doesnt irritate your babys skin.

Youll also want to make sure that it locks in moisture to help treat the current flare-up while providing a barrier to prevent future flare-ups.

When choosing our favorite baby eczema creams, we tried to find ones that had a higher chance of success by considering:

  • whether its a cream, lotion, or ointment
  • if its fragrance-free
  • if its hypoallergenic

Creams tend to be thick and good for all-day use, but they can include allergenic preservatives or fragrances that can make eczema worse.

Ointments tend to be very greasy and are not appropriate for weeping eczema. However, they have a lesser chance of stinging or burning than creams and lotions and tend to be more moisturizing. They may be better tolerated by infants.

Lotions have fewer fats than creams, and theyre usually water-based. This makes them easier to rub into the body but less effective at moisturizing skin.

Just because a cream is organic or natural, it doesnt guarantee its hypoallergenic, so youll want to double-check for that distinction.

Also, we know that price can be a factor, so we made sure to keep that in mind.

What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of Eczema

The signs of eczema :

  • are mainly dry, itchy skin. Because it is so itchy, it is often called “the itch that rashes.”
  • include redness, scales, and bumps that can leak fluid and then crust over
  • tend to come and go. When they get worse, it is called a flare-up.
  • may be more noticeable at night

Symptoms can vary:

  • Infants younger than 1 year old usually have the eczema rash on their cheeks, forehead, or scalp. It may spread to the knees, elbows, and trunk .
  • Older kids and teens usually get the rash in the bends of the elbows, behind the knees, on the neck, or on the inner wrists and ankles. Their skin is often scalier and drier than when the eczema first began. It also can be thicker, darker, or scarred from all the scratching .

When Should You Apply Baby Eczema Cream

Its a good idea to apply eczema cream to your babys skin right after their bath to seal in moisture. You can reapply it several times throughout the day, or when their diaper is changed.

Check the product instructions and talk with your childs doctor for more specific information about how often to apply your preferred eczema cream on your baby.

Wondering whether its time to book an appointment with your childs doctor about their eczema? Get in touch if:

  • itching is not able to be controlled
  • the rash looks infected
  • the rash continues to spread
  • fever accompanies the eczema

Please note this isnt an exhaustive list. Always reach out to your pediatrician if you believe your baby needs to be seen for any reason.

Does Baby Oil Help You Tan

How To Treat Baby Eczema

Baby oil acts as a reflector of UV rays, which can attract more sun. It also helps the rays absorb more deeply into the skin, which causes you to tan to a darker shade.

That said, it will not protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun especially sunburn so it should never be used alone during tanning. Never lie directly in the sun without sunscreen.

Giving Your Baby Antiseptic Baths

Giving your baby an antiseptic bath twice a week can help improve eczema, decrease bacteria, and prevent skin infections. The best antiseptic to use is bleach. However, you need to dilute the bleach with water first. Bleaches come in different strengths and how much water you use depends on the strength of the bleach you are using.

Bleach is sold at the supermarket and will be in the cleaning aisle. You need bleach that has no added detergent or fragrance.

Always store the bleach where your baby or young children cant reach it.

Diluted Bleach In The Bath

If your baby’s eczema regularly flares up, a dilute bleach bath— a bath where a small, gentle amount of bleach is mixed in—may help.

A bleach bath helps clean off harmful bacteria that may cause your baby’s eczema to flare up, including the bacteria responsible for staph infections. Research shows that bleach baths may not only clean off this bacteria and reduce infections, but also directly stop eczema flares.

As the American Academy of Dermatology recommends, use ¼ cup of regular strength bleach for a standard tub that will be half full of water, and one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water for a baby tub.

Measure out the bleach with the measuring spoon or cup, and pour it into the bath as the tub is filling up with water, to make sure the bleach is fully diluted.

Then, bathe your baby for the length of time that your dermatologist recommends. Make sure plenty of bleach water gets on all areas of your baby’s body. Use a washcloth to gently apply the bleach water to baby’s head, neck, hands and feet.

Like with all natural eczema treatments, always ask your dermatologist before starting a dilute bleach bath treatment. For more details on how to give your baby a bleach bath, check out our article on bathing eczema babies.

Surprising Ways Parents Make Eczema Itchier

Eucerin Baby Eczema Relief Flare

Some itch-relieving techniques that people use can make eczema itchier. To prevent this, dermatologists recommend that you avoid:

  • Telling your child to stop scratching: This rarely works and can leave your child feeling stressed. Stress can cause eczema to flare.

  • Using anti-itch products: This may seem strange, but anti-itch products often fail to relieve itchy eczema. To make matters worse, some contain ingredients that can cause eczema to flare. Only use an anti-itch product if your childs dermatologist recommends one.

Does Baby Eczema Go Away On Its Own

Baby eczema needs treatment to go away completely. The best treatment is using moisturizer daily or several times each day to keep your babys skin hydrated.

Most cases of baby eczema clear up by the time they start school, around age 4 or 5. Sometimes eczema can go away or reduce in severity as your child reaches adolescence or by the time they turn into adults. As your child grows, they may have sensitive skin or flare-ups of eczema symptoms throughout their life.

    Add A Protective Barrier

Slather an extra layer of petroleum jelly on your babys cheeks and nose before heading out for a wintery walk to prevent chapping and irritation from dry winter air. If your baby gets an eczema flare around her mouth, apply petroleum jelly or another thick barrier cream to the area before meals and snacks, advises Michele Ramien, a dermatologist at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. Kids with eczema have the genetics to develop allergies, and one of the main ways they become allergic is through exposure on broken or damaged skin, she explains. The barrier will also prevent acidic foods such as strawberries and tomato sauce from irritating the skin when they inevitably get all over your little ones face.

Emollients treat dry skin by providing a surface film of oils. This increases water in the upper layer of the skin, restoring and providing a robust skin barrier, to prevent the entry of environmental agents or triggers.

Emollients soften the skin and reduce itch. If they are used regularly to maintain skin hydration, they can reduce the frequency of eczema flares. Leave-on emollients include lotions, creams, ointments and gels.

The emollient advised or prescribed for your baby should prevent dry skin and not cause irritation. You might need to try several products until you find the right one. Apply leave-on emollients regularly, throughout the day for example, at every nappy change and after bathing.

Use the product liberally . To apply the product, dot it all over the skin, and then smooth it in, using a gentle, downward, stroking motion rather than rubbing in.

Natural Oils For Eczema: Which Ones Are Safe And Effective

Natural oil has been used in skin care for centuries. A good number of natural oils have beneficial fatty acids that help to repair the skins natural barrier, which is defective in patients with eczema.

But not all natural oils are good for our skin. Some can be irritating and may even worsen eczema. The plant source, composition and the ways that natural oils are extracted determine their benefit and harm.

Cold-pressed fixed oils are made by extracting oil from seeds or nuts without adding chemicals or heat, and therefore tend to be safer for skin use.

On the other hand, essential oils are extracted through steam-distillation of aromatic flowers or leaves. Heat and chemicals added during essential oil extraction can produce irritating compounds, and therefore should be avoided for skin use.

Several natural oils have been found to be safe and beneficial alternative moisturizers. Virgin coconut oil contains monolaurin, a fatty acid that mitigates Staphylococcus aureus colonization that can typically develop in eczema patients.

Virgin coconut oil is also superior in improving eczema compared to mineral oil . Virgin sunflower seed oil has anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe itchy and inflamed eczema skin, and can improve skin hydration and preserve the integrity of the skins natural barrier.

Prevent Skin Damage Caused By Scratching

Constant scratching can break the skin. To prevent bleeding and an infection, dermatologists recommend the following:

  • Keep your childs nails short: Checking nails after your childs bath lets you know when the nails need trimming.

  • Cover itchy skin: When skin is covered, children seem less likely to scratch. When dressing your child, be sure to:

  • Dress your child in lose-fitting clothes made from a soft, natural fiber-like cotton, a cotton blend, silk, or bamboo.

  • Consider using eczema mittens and eczema sleeves.

  • Eczema mittens can be effective when eczema flares on your babys face. Your baby may still scratch, but the scratching will cause less damage because the fingernails cannot dig into the skin.

    Itch relief can be fickle

You may find that a technique works one day and not the next. If one technique fails, try another.

    Consider Diluted Bleach Baths

Silverberg suggests them for babies older than 6 months who have moderate or severe eczema. They’re especially helpful if your baby has crusting on their skin. Bleach helps remove staph bacteria — a known eczema trigger — without antibiotics.

Talk to your pediatrician before giving your baby a bleach bath. If you do, use 1 teaspoon of bleach per 1 gallon of water or 1/4 cup per full bathtub.

Sound harsh? Silverberg says it’s just like putting your child into a swimming pool with chlorine. Whatâs more, it may give your baby fewer flare-ups and more comfort.

    What Does It Look Like

Baby Eczema Itch Relief Wash & Shampoo

The signs of eczema in infants include itchy, dry and scaly skin, redness and swelling of the skin and small bumps that open and weep when scratched. In infants and young children, eczema is usually found on the face, outside of the elbows, and on the knees.

In older children and adults, eczema tends to be on the hands and feet, the arms, and on the back of the knees.Keep in mind that all patches of dry skin are not eczema. The cold, dry outdoor air and indoor heating can dry all babies skin in winter, causing dry patches. In children prone to dry skin, so can the sun, air conditioning, and pool and salt water.

We dermatologists usually say if its not itchy, its not eczema you cant make a diagnosis of eczema unless there is an itchiness that goes with the rash. Babies with cradle cap, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, can also have a wide-spread rash, which is not eczema in itself. But it is common for cradle cap and eczema to co-exist in the first several months of life.

Is Coconut Oil An Effective Eczema Treatment

Good question. Coconut oil is a saturated plant fat consisting primarily of medium and short-chain fatty acids. These fatty acid molecules are relatively small, so are readily absorbed through cell membranes.

In addition, these fatty acid molecules are not easily oxidized and so wont create harmful free radicals. As a result of this composition, coconut oil is a really effective moisturiser for dry skin.

It also has proven antibacterial, antifungal and even anti-viral components meaning that as well as moisturising, coconut oil combats the infections responsible for much of the eczema itch. Coconut oil is also packed full of vitamins that help nourish the skin.
