Causes And Risk Factors Of Dyshidrotic Eczema

As with other forms of eczema, we do not understand what causes it or why it affects some more than others, but there do appear to be genetics involved, as it is more common in some families, says Lio. Frequent hand-washing, sweaty hands and feet, and contact with irritants or chemicals are all the most common . We see it in many healthcare workers, as you can imagine.

According to the AAD, dyshidrotic eczema is more likely to occur if you:

What Does It Look Like

Different types of eczema may look quite different, so it is important to see a qualified dermatologist so that you know for sure whether you have eczema or another type of skin condition. In general, it looks like this:

  • Dry, thickened, cracked or scaling skin.
  • Inflammation and redness.
  • Oozing and weeping skin sores.
  • Light skinned people may see a rash that is initially red, and then may turn brown.
  • Dark skinned people can experience a rash that is either lighter or darker than the rest of the skin.
  • In babies, eczema rash can create oozing sores and crusting on the face and scalp.

Please see our Pictures of Eczema page for more information on what the rash looks like.

Symptoms Of Dyshidrotic Eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema causes the development of very itchy, and very painful blisters called vesicles, which later grow larger and become weepy. It also causes prickly, itching, burning sensations in the palms and/or soles.

Dyshidrotic eczema blisters usually last between two and four weeks before they start to dry. As the blisters, and the skin around them, start to dry out, the skin becomes tender and can turn red. Often, the skin peels at this point, and sometimes, the drying out creates very painful skin cracks called fissures.

Occasionally, the vesicles can become infected, causing swelling, more pain, and pustules to emerge.

What Do The Ecz

Although dyshidrotic eczema involves limited areas of the body, it can have a big impact on patients, said Dr. Gil Yosipovitch, MD, professor and director of the Miami Itch Center at the Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida.

Unlike some forms of eczema, you dont usually cover it with clothes, so its visible to others. It can affect social interactions you may not want to shake hands, for example.

Its very common to see emotional stress induce or exacerbate this type of eczema, he added. A college student may be in the midst of exams, for example, and suddenly develop blistering at the fingertips.

Eczema Type: Dyshidrotic Eczema

This type of eczema looks and behaves a little differently than the others. Symptoms include itchy water blisters on your hands and feet. These blisters can also burn and cause prickling feelings on our palms and soles. Rich moisturizers and eczema creams may help. Soaking hands and feet in cool water or applying compresses to the affected area two to four times a day also help. Sometimes steroids or topical anesthesia are needed, the NEA points out. At the same time, they note that there is no surefire way to prevent dyshidrotic eczema, emphasizing the importance of skin care consistency. Minor hand trauma from tasks like digging in the garden with bare hands can cause hand eczema or make it worse, as can friction from activities like handling large quantities of paper.

How to dodge it: Wear task-appropriate gloves. Cotton and fabric gloves can keep hands clean and protect against abrasions, but they may not be adequate for work with rough or sharp materials. Working with thorny plants, palm fronds or brambles may require leather gloves with longer cuffs.

Avoiding eczema triggers often goes a long way toward managing the condition. The key is to be diligent. It can take a massive amount of effort if you have severe hand dermatitis, and people often want a quick fix, but putting in that effort to take care of your skin really pays off in keeping eczema from coming back, said Dr. OBrien.

Dont get discouraged: Hand eczema can be stubborn, and it may take a few months for the patches of red, scaly and inflamed skin to fully heal. After that, your eczema is less likely to return.

What Are The Complications Of Vesicular Hand/foot Dermatitis

Secondary bacterialinfection with Staphylococcus aureus and/or Streptococcus pyogenes is common in vesicular hand/foot dermatitis and results in pain, swelling, and pustules on the hands and/or feet.

When involving the distal finger adjacent or proximal to the nail fold, it can result in paronychia and nail dystrophy with irregular pitting and ridges.

Infected vesicular hand dermatitis
  • Soothing emollient lotions and creams
  • Potent antiperspirants applied to palms and soles at night
  • Protective gloves should be worn for wet or dirty work
  • Well-fitting footwear, with 2 pairs of socks to absorb sweat and reduce friction.

Contact with irritants such as water, detergents, and solvents must be avoided as much as possible and protective gloves worn to prevent irritant contact dermatitis.

  • Note that cream cleansers are not antimicrobial soap and water or a sanitiser is needed for washing hands in order to destroy pathogens such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19.

People with vesicular hand dermatitis found to be allergic to nickel must try to avoid touching nickel items.

Dyshidrotic Eczema In Children

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is more common in children and infants than in adults. About 10 to 20 percent have some form of eczema. But many will outgrow atopic dermatitis or eczema by adulthood.

Conversely, dyshidrotic eczema can also affect children, but its rare.

The first symptoms of a dyshidrotic eczema flare may be a burning, itching sensation without any visual clues.

Tiny, itchy blisters might then develop, most likely on your:

  • palms
  • feet

In severe cases, the blisters can expand to the back of hands, limbs, and feet.

These tiny blisters can grow together and form larger areas that are very itchy, red, and raised. If the skin becomes infected, the blisters can become painful and ooze pus.

Typically, dyshidrotic eczema heals on its own in 3 to 4 weeks, but as the blisters heal, they can cause your skin to become very dry and peel. Individuals with a darker skin tone may develop dark spots where the blisters have healed.

Use A Moisturizer On Your Skin Every Day

Moisturizers help keep your skin soft and flexible. They prevent skin cracks. A plain moisturizer is best. Avoid moisturizers with fragrances and a lot of extra ingredients. A good, cheap moisturizer is plain petroleum jelly . Use moisturizers that are more greasy than creamy because creams usually have more preservatives in them.

Regular use of a moisturizer can help prevent the dry skin that is common in winter.
