Wool And Synthetic Fabrics

Water Quality Can Make Your Eczema WORSE / Testing Chlorine at Home

Some fibers are more irritating to the skin than others. Wool is notoriously prickly, and many synthetic fabric are too abrasive against the skin. Fabrics like wool and polyester can be eczema triggers, according to the NEA. Cotton clothing and bedding are usually recommended for people with atopic dermatitis because cotton is cool and breathable. Bamboo is another eczema-friendly fiber, says the NEA.

Tip: Check the tags before buying. Launder new garments before wearing them to wash away any irritating chemicals and dyes.

How Was My Skin Before Using A Water Softener

Ill be honest, this water softener has arrived at a new low point with my skin. Ive been in a very deep healing crisis now which has been worsening for a few months and hit its peak just days after the unit was fitted.

If you read my blog regularly youll know Ive been going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal now for nearly three years which means a continual cycle of healing symptoms as the skin heals from deep down, including inflammation, oozing, crusting, dry skin and excessive flaking.

So you can see, the skin is healing. I call it a healing crisis and I have been deep in healing recently.

Can Drinking Water Cure Your Dry Skin

When your body is thirsty, it needs water. However, this principle does not apply to dry, thirsty skin. We tend to think that drinking a lot of water can cure dry skin, but the truth is that its not effective.

A normally-hydrated person probably wont see a difference in their skin after drinking an increased volume of water. Drinking an excessive amount of water can lead to other health problems and is not recommended for dry skin.

Dry skin is an external problem and is best treated from the outside. External factors such as cleansing products, environment and oil glands determine how dry your skin is or will become.

Can Soft Water Relieve Eczema

Eczema is a dry skin condition where the infected skin becomes itchy, red, inflamed and rough. The condition is very common: it affects 20% of children aged up to 11 years old and 8% of teenagers and adults, according to dermatologists. There is no cure to eczema, but most peoples cases get better as they get older. Eczema is caused by things such as food allergies, hot and cold temperatures, allergens and irritants. It can be treated by applying heavy skin moisturizer within three minutes of bathing, taking regular warm baths and having a water softener system.

Hard water is not a cause of eczema, but it can make the infected skin more irritated. In areas where hard water is more common, the number of people with eczema is higher. Skins Matter did a study on the effects of having a water softener on people with eczema.

Could A Water Softener Help With Eczema And Dry Skin Conditions

After a two year study, Scientists at the University of Sheffield have found that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema.

Minerals in hard water were shown to make skin more sensitive to irritation, but when researchers used a twin-tank water softener in their study they found that softened water could reduce these negative effects. It could even lower the risk of eczema developing in the first place. For people living with chronic skin conditions this research could be a game changer.

Eczema is a painful and distressing skin condition, which affects many children and adults in the UK. Most current treatments for eczema only suppress the condition and in the case of steroid creams can often have unwanted side-effects.

Scientists Prove Link Between Hard Water And Eczema

New research has revealed the link between hard water and skin conditions like eczema. Scientists at the University of Sheffield and Kings College London, have proved that hard water damages the skin, raising the risk of infection and potentially contributing to the development of eczema. The study, which we were asked to fund, proves what weve known here for years that when it comes to skin conditions, softened water can make all the difference.

How A Kinetico Water Softener Can Help With Eczema

Do you or someone you know have eczema? Eczema is a medical condition also known as atopic dermatitis. Eczema causes healthy skin to become inflamed or irritated, in addition it is usually characterized by sore, itchy and burning skin. According to the National Eczema Association 30 million Americans, both adults and children are afflicted by this chronic skin disease.

Healthy skin appears smooth, soft, and supple but some visible symptoms of skin afflicted by eczema may be a rash, raised, scaled skin, or the skin may ooze or weep. Eczema can appear on the face, wrists, hands, back of the knees and even the feet.

The cause of eczema is unknown but we do know that many people choose to use a water softener to help alleviate some of the painful symptoms and improve the ability of the skin to naturally heal itself.

The science of soft water allows the soap to clean the skin efficiently and effectively. Hard water has calcium and magnesium. Calcium and magnesium love to bind to the ingredients in our soaps. This can create residue. If you have hard water then you probably have had problems with water spots on your dishes.

If you have eczema, damaged or dry skin, read more about how Kineticos efforts to help in the fight against eczema.

Why Hard Water Hurts Our Skin

Studies show that hard water contains high amounts of calcium and magnesium. While these are healthy minerals to ingest, they are not good for your skin.

These minerals not only clog pores, but the residue can linger on your body and cause dry skin. This effect is multiplied when you combine with body washes and soaps.

Soft Water = Moisturized Skin

It would make sense that water would moisturize your skin, but thats not always how it works. Especially here in West Texas, the combination of hard water and dry air can leave your skin feeling itchy and dry after every shower.

However, soft water created by a water softener can have the opposite effect. Bathing in soft water can help heal itchy, rashy skin, even for those with eczema. Your skin will stay hydrated long after you leave the tub.

Would A Water Softener Help Eczema

Recent research showed that soft water is much better for your skin overall. However, there is no specific study on whether softened water can eliminate eczema. Rather, soft water could provide relief for chronic eczema sufferers since it removes magnesium and calcium. Water filters with softeners can be installed at your water supply so that you remove hard water completely from your home. As a bonus, soft water can improve your hair texture and skin tone, too.

Can Elimination Diets Help Treat Eczema

An elimination diet involves removing certain foods from your diet to help identify the cause of an allergic reaction or other food-related symptoms. Youll avoid a particular food or ingredient for a few weeks, and then monitor your skin for any changes.

If symptoms improve, slowly reintroduce the food into your diet over a few days. If symptoms return, youve likely found a trigger.

An elimination diet isnt only effective for eczema. Its also helpful for identifying foods that may trigger other conditions, like celiac disease, a gluten intolerance, a lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Research suggests that people with specific food allergies may find some eczema relief by avoiding those foods. But there isnt much evidence showing that so-called elimination diets those in which people completely stop eating certain food groups are effective for eczema relief in general.

In 2008, researchers from the Cochrane Collaboration conducted a literature review to see if elimination diets had any effect on eczema symptoms. In eight of the nine studies reviewed, people with eczema who followed elimination diets showed little to no improvement in symptoms but these people werent tested for food allergies beforehand.

In the last study, babies known to have an allergic reaction to eggs experienced fewer eczema rashes after going on an egg-free diet.

Damaging effects of hard water

People with eczema might find their skin improves when they install a water softener or move to a soft water region. This is because hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium which can potentially irritate the skin.

Another reason is that households in hard water areas tend to use more soap and detergent when washing clothes and bathing products we know inflame the skin of eczema sufferers. Water softeners have an ion exchange system which removes the calcium and magnesium salts from the water, thus completely eliminating the hardness.

Eczema is 50% more common in hard water areas

More than 60% of households are located in hard water areas in England and Wales. Research carried out at the University of Nottingham** by dermatologists, medical geographers and statisticians in 1998 indicated that hard water could play a part in causing eczema flare-ups in some children. The study, involving more than 7,500 school age children, found that eczema is around 50% more common in primary schoolchildren living in hard water areas than those who live in soft water areas. This could not be attributed to differences in age or social class.

Do Water Softeners Help Eczema Symptoms

To answer this question, the University of Nottinghams Centre of Evidence-based Dermatology team set up the Softened-Water Eczema Trial , involving 336 children for a 16-week period.

In one of the study groups, an ion-exchange water softener was installed in the childs house, and they were given usual eczema care. In the other group, children received usual eczema care only.

Research nurses, who did not know which children had been allocated a water softener, assessed both groups for signs of improvement to their skin.

The results of the scientific study were that no difference was found between the two groups in terms of eczema severity and there was no difference in night-time scratching or the need for topical creams and ointments.

But an interesting insight is that the researchers found parents were using consistently less of the childs prescription creams than recommended.

If Hard Water Is Affecting Your Eczema This Is How A Water Softener Might Help

If you are concerned about hard water, you may consider getting a water softener, which is similar to a water filter, as it works to remove any unwanted mineral compounds. Water treatment can improve hardness issues, according to the Water Quality Association, a non-profit international trade association representing the water treatment industry.11

Pooled evidence from meta-analysis shows hard water likely negatively effects AD, but interventional studies thus far have not shown benefit overall. The effects of hard water seem most serious in conjunction with filaggrin mutation and disruptions in the skin barrier.12

A trial called the Softened Water for Eczema Prevention is underway to investigate whether water softeners can help reduce the risk of eczema in babies.13 This study offers the first major look at the impact of using water softeners on babies in their own homes.

Why Is Hard Water Bad For Your Skin

The trace minerals in hard water such as calcium and magnesium can clog and block your pipes and washing machine and leave bathrooms and kitchens stained with limescale, so just imagine what it can do to sensitive skin. It can clog skin pores which can lead to acne or eczema and it also strips the skin of its natural moisture leading to dryness, tightness and irritation and also a dry flaky scalp.

Free radicals can also form, caused by those traces of calcium and magnesium, which are known to break down collagen which keeps the skin firm.

A study done to understand whether water softeners could help eczema in children found that there seems to be a link between having a filaggrin mutation, being exposed to harder water and developing eczema.1

A genetic filaggrin mutation means that the skin is lacking the gene that helps the skin stay hydrated and moisturised, leaving it susceptible to eczema and atopic dermatitis.
