Who doesn?t love their morning cup of caffeine? Coffee and tea consumption have become a significant part of American society. The cafe culture is a multi-billion dollar industry. This isn?t anything new?many civilizations for centuries have worshiped them too. But do these beloved brews contribute to eczema?

This is a question I?ve had to tackle for years in my practice with patients and for myself. Like any issues related to food or root causes of eczema- it?s a matter of individuality and how it?s affecting the inflammatory process in your body.

Personally, I love both tea and coffee for different reasons- I?ve been a lifelong tea drinker , but in my early 30?s I discovered coffee. I?d always loved the smell, but didn?t care for the taste. But as I began changing my diet to be cleaner and gravitated to Paleo/Primal, my taste buds changed.

Suddenly, I really liked coffee. I enjoyed the slight bitterness, dark chocolate, and fruity notes, much like a good wine. I hear this from patients too- they report liking bitter things such as coffee and really dark chocolate as they lose the taste for sugar.

I can drink it black, but I really love a warm cup of joe with grassfed butter and coconut oil in the morning. That?s heavenly for me!

I get it. The thought of giving up my tasty, warm beverages gave me slight panic too.

I also seem to lose my short term memory and all of my actions feel meaningless. I never used to have a reaction like this in the past. In-fact, I used to benefit from nicotine and caffeine greatly. They helped me manage my symptoms of ADHD. Also, I quit consuming either of them for at least 2 months, and once using them again, I still experienced this effect. Why is this happening to me?

The Causes Of Seborrhoeic Eczema

I really love coffee but I wouldnt go over 1 big cup of it in a day, unless I really need a boost to keep me studying through the night for exams. From a news program, a friend heard that 300 mg of coffee can cause skin problems including atopic dermatitis. Regardless if its true or not, I highly agree from experience that too much coffee & caffeine will trigger my flare-ups.

Similarly for you tea lovers, I would suggest limiting Green tea as it has the highest level of caffeine compared to other types of tea. The TRICK is to drink during certain times of the day, like from morning to midday as its appropriate for your body to receive a boost of energy as well as antioxidants . At night when youre body is relaxed you may want to avoid it as it can prevent you from sleeping & can cause you to be extremely itchy. There are other types of teas that has the least amount of caffeine that I would drink such as white tea & Rooibos. I find that these 2 tea rarely cause me agitation at night.

Alchohol is no doubt an inflammatory drink that can not only cause a beer belly if consumed daily, but also causes irritation to several organs in your body including your skin, which is basically the largest organ that surrounds & protects your insides.

It takes me up to and over and hour to fall asleep and even then on average i only get about 5 hours sleep on a good night, and am tired constantly throughout the day. This past year it seems worse as its effecting my eating habits and mood. I tend to forget to eat anything because i just don’t get that feeling of being hungry and my moods seem to have completely flipped, I’m more short-tempered and emotional. I have tried everything to help me sleep better. less caffeine, not using technology before bed, setting up a sleep routine, relaxing before sleep. Nothing seems to work, and i’m a bit dubious about going to my GP because i don’t know how they could help me.

Case Study: Cutting Out Cow’s Milk Ended Rory’s Flare

When, in 2012, ITV weather presenter Becky Mantin first spotted an eczema patch on her baby sons foot, she thought nothing of it.

But, ten months later, she woke up to find ten-month-old Rory covered in an angry, red rash.

We feared the worst and thought it was meningitis so took him to A& E, Becky, 38, recalls.

The doctor told us it was eczema and I was relieved at first.

Little did she know that this was just the beginning. Over the next couple of years his flare-ups got worse, becoming more frequent.

He would scratch himself raw, says Becky. We put socks over his hands to stop him from scratching.

Theres a history of eczema in my husbands family so I had an inkling that could be part of it.
