A lot of people who suffer from eczema notice white spots where itching and rashes occur. It can be very unsightly and irritating for people who suffer from it, and can make like a burden in general. But what causes eczema white spots and how can they be gotten rid of? The answer is simpler than you might think.
White spots from eczema are caused from a loss of pigmentation on the skin due to long term damage from itching and irritation. Essentially, what is happening is the skin has reacted so heavily to damage from scratching, inflammation and allergens that it has stopped produce pigment effectively, thus white spots are created all over the affected area. This is a sign of a long term problem that may need prescription medication in order to be reversed.
There are a number of things that can be done to reduce or reverse the damage once it has reached this point. Moisturizing the skin with creams and body washes can help tremendously, even after the fact, and over the counter supplements such as fish oils and flaxseed oils will increase your skin’s moisture from the inside out.

Today’s blog post will review some of the more common white spots I get asked about as a board-certified dermatologist and what I suggest.

Post-inflammatory Hypopigmentation
What can cause this? Any condition that irritates or inflames the skin, such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or traumatic injuries to the skin like cuts or burns. When the skin is injured, irritated, or inflamed, it will heal in one of two ways, become dark or light. The light discoloration is what is referred to as post- inflammatory hypo- pigmentation. The discoloration can take several months to resolve. Very rarely is it permanent.
Protect these areas from sun exposure at all times by wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or above and protective clothing. Continue the sun protection even after it resolves.
Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis
Little white dots that are sprinkled along the skin in sun exposed areas. We in dermatology really don’t understand the exact mechanism of how they are formed. Hence the name, idiopathic guttate hypo- melanosis .
They are usually associated with sun exposure and sun damage. And to prevent getting more, sunscreen and protective clothing is the way to go.

Should I Be Concerned About White Spots
In most cases, white spots on the skin do not require medical treatment.
However, it is important to have white spots checked by a dermatologist to rule out any underlying conditions.
People are also advised to talk with a doctor about white spots if they:
- remain after a few weeks of basic treatment
- continuously reappear
Who Is Likely To Get It
Up to 2% of the population and an estimated 2 to 5 million Americans have the condition. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman.
In most cases, it develops early in life, between ages 10 and 30. It will almost always show up before age 40.
Vitiligo may run in families. You’re more likely to get it when someone else in your family has it, too, or when people in your family get gray hair prematurely.
Autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune thyroid disease or type 1 diabetes, can also raise your odds.

Diagnosis And Tests For White Spots On Skin
Your doctor will diagnose your skin after discussing your personal and family medical history and examining your skin.
Sometimes your doctor may want to do a biopsy of the area. This involves removing a sample of skin to study your skin cells. A doctor may look for a decrease in the amount of skin cells called melanocytes. However, this procedure is usually unnecessary.
Your doctor may also ask for your symptoms to rule out other skin conditions like a fungal infection or an autoimmune condition.
Treatment Of Tinea Versicolor
Topical antifungal medicines are very effective for treating tinea versicolor, but there is a more convenient, less expensive, highly effective alternative.
Selenium shampoos are great at getting rid of the fungus. Simply apply a thin layer over the affected skin before bed . Wash thoroughly the next morning.
The problem is that no matter what the treatment, it comes back easily. Whatever treatment is used for tinea versicolor, all bedding and nightclothes should be changed after treatment to prevent recurrence. Also, re-treating once a week for 3-4 weeks and then once a month for 3-4 months makes it much less likely to come back.
With either pityriasis alba or tinea versicolor, even when the condition is effectively treated, the white patches of skin will remain for a while. At least several weeks must pass for the newly healthy skin to adjust its color to the amount of ongoing sunlight exposure, so that it will match the surrounding skin.
At your nephewâs upcoming three-year-old well child exam, it would be wise for his parents to ask the doctor about the white patches of skin . But in the meantime, relax. How Is Discoid Eczema Diagnosed
It is diagnosed by the typical skin appearance. If your doctor is uncertain about the diagnosis then he or she may need to exclude a fungal skin infection. For example, if there has been clearing of the skin rash in the centre , they may suggest scraping a few skin cells off a skin patch. These can then be sent off to the laboratory to look for a fungal infection. If your doctor is worried that there may be a bacterial infection of a skin patch, they may take a sample . Again, this can be sent to the laboratory to look for this type of infection.
If your doctor feels that you may have contact dermatitis, they may suggest skin patch testing. In this procedure, tiny amounts of up to 25 or more substances are applied as small patches to your skin, usually on your upper back. They are fixed on with non-allergic tape. Some days later, you return to the skin department and the patches are removed. Your skin is examined to see if there is a reaction to any of the tested substances. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition that causes red, itchy and dry skin as a result of inflammation. Sometimes white patches or spots can form within a red rash. This condition is typically found in children but can continue into adulthood. Eczema symptoms include dry, scaly, thickened skin that is almost always itchy. Especially among darker skinned people, eczema can cause skin discoloration, making the affected area lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.
The cause of eczema is unknown but it is thought to be linked to allergies and asthma and is suspected to be an overactive immune response to an irritant. While there is no cure for the condition, symptoms can be managed. For many people, eczema will even go away over time. Doctors can prescribe topical corticosteroid creams and ointments, oral medications and light therapy to help ease symptoms.

What Causes Discoid Eczema
The exact cause of discoid eczema is uncertain. However, most people with discoid eczema have generally dry skin. One theory is that the dry skin upsets the normal fatty layer within the outer layer of the skin which usually helps to protect the skin. Because this protection is lost, special proteins that can cause allergy can penetrate through the skin. This can lead to an allergic or irritant response in the skin, so leading to the patches of eczema. In fact, some doctors actually consider discoid eczema as a form of adult-onset atopic dermatitis.
Sometimes certain medicines can trigger discoid eczema in some people. For example, medicines used to treat hepatitis C infection . Insect bites or injury to the skin can also trigger an outbreak of discoid eczema in some people.
Because the fatty, protective layer within the skin is lost, it is thought that some people with discoid eczema may also have an increased risk of developing contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is eczema that is caused by your skin reacting to a substance it has come into contact with.
