A note from Cleveland Clinic

Although eyelid dermatitis wont stop you from going about your daily activities, it is a nuisance. It can cause itching and sometimes pain, so its important to get checked out by a healthcare provider as soon as possible to keep the symptoms from getting severe. Try your best with the help of the people around you to figure out what may have caused the dermatitis. If you can figure that out and avoid the trigger, then you can prevent future flares. Around 15% to 20% of people experience contact dermatitis at some point in their lives, so know that youre not alone.

How Is The Diagnosis Of Allergic Eyelid Contact Dermatitis Made

How I Cured My Eczema (Face/Eyelids)?

Diagnosis of eyelid allergic contact dermatitis is made by identifying its characteristic features.

  • An itchy rash that affects one or both eyelids
  • This is most likely to occur intermittently at intervals of days to years
  • Suspicion that it has been caused or aggravated by contact with an allergen .
  • Patch tests to one or more suspected contact allergens are positive

Knowing the details of all substances that the skin may have been exposed to in skin care, hobbies and work are an important part of the detective work required to find the cause of a eyelid dermatitis. Patch tests should be arranged to establish or confirm the triggering allergen.

Atopic Dermatitis And Genetics

Atopic dermatitis often runs in families. You might have a genetic mutation that makes you more prone to atopic dermatitis. With this mutation, your body doesnt produce enough of a protein called filaggrin which helps to keep your skin strong.

If you have other allergies, such as hay fever, you are also more likely to develop eczema around the eyes or other parts of your body.

Eczema on the eyelid can be very itchy, just like eczema on other parts of the body. The skin can become pink or red, scaly and dry. It is very similar to eczema on other parts of the body but the biggest difference is that the eyelid skin is thinner than other parts of the body. It is very important to know what to apply on the eyelid.

How To Treat Dry Flaking Eyelids:

If youre not sure whats causing your dry eyelids, the first step will be to check in with a dermatologist. They may want to conduct some patch testing to see if you have an undiagnosed allergy, Dr. Kassouf says. However, there are a few measures you can take on your own if youre having eyelid eczema and dealing with an excess of flakes.

1. First, simplify your skin-care and makeup routines.

Start by avoiding as many products as possible, keeping eyelids clean and dry and using just a bit of moisturizer, Dr. Kassouf advises. Once your eyes have improved, then you can restart one product every few days, she says. If irritation occurs, then you should be able to identify which product you are sensitive to and remove that from your routine.

Its also important to streamline your eye-makeup routine. Reassess whether or not you need to use all of those products, like primer, shadow, liner, and mascara, all of which have preservatives or even fragrance than can cause a reactionsometimes weeks, months, or years after beginning to use a product. All of these contain ingredients with potential irritants or allergens.

2. Swap eye creams for simple ointments for the time being.

Instead, opt for a simple emollient such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Vaseline during a flare-up, which Dr. Kassouf says can be easier on the eyes during periods of irritation. Something like Vaseline All-Over Body Balm Stick may be easier to take on-the-go, Dr. Zeichner says.

Ask the Ecz-perts: How do you treat eyelid eczema?

There are plenty of over-the-counter and off-the-shelf treatments for eczema available at pharmacies.

If you develop eczema due to an allergic reaction, antihistamines can help you manage the itching and swelling.

Corticosteroids can also treat eczema itching, but using them around your eyes is risky .

Consult your doctor before trying any OTC treatment .

What If Its Just Ridiculously Itchy

If its unbearably itchy, obviously its only a matter of time before you lose your willpower and start scratching, and thats why I understand its so annoying, when people who dont have eczema say just stop scratching as if it was that easy!

Thats why you have my unique solution. Something I came up with using some common sense doctors seem to have not.

You use a topical anesthetic cream, you know the ones that they use so that surgeons can cut you open. Unsurprisingly they are powerful itch removed duh!

Lidocaine cream is used for tatoo removal. A thin dab of this over your eyelids will remove any itching. For this to work you need surgery grade Lidocaine cream. Not a doctor here, but its completely safe as they use lots and lots of it in tatoo parlours. There are Lidocaine creams for mosquito bites at 3-4% its just way too weak to have an effect on extremely itchy skin.

For how to do this properly read my next section about the Ring Finger technique.

Another point: Rubbing your eyes all the time makes you look older faster. The skin around your eyes is so fragile that constant rubbing or stretching will create fine lines much earlier than when they should appear . I have the scars to show for this one. The same goes if you constantly have eczema around your eyelids. The skin here is just very very vulnerable.

How Do You Treat Eczema On Eyelids Naturally

There are many natural treatment options out there that people have tried. The choice is yours if you want to embark down the road, but it is a path less studied. Many treatment options offered by medical doctors have gone through rigorous research and testing. The same cannot be said of most natural, or alternative treatment options.

Personally, I have tried various oils such as coconut oil and olive oil. I did not have issues or side effects with these. On the other hand, I did not find them too helpful, so I stopped using them.

How Is Eyelid Eczema Treated

The most important treatment is to figure out what caused the rash. That involves thinking about how the allergen or irritant got to your eyes. I target hair care products, face cleansers and face and hand products.

Usually, a day or two after contact, the rash starts. Then, it slowly builds up if you dont figure out the cause. To help sleuth out the cause, I remove some of the possible culprits I have patients use only hypoallergenic shampoo, face wash and moisturizers.

Contact Vs Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema on Eyelids

Eyelid dermatitis most commonly presents in two key varieties:

Contact dermatitis

In contact dermatitis, substances liquid, solid or gas can trigger contact dermatitis in the eyelids simply by touching them. Contact is most commonly made through:

  • Irritants Substances that trigger a change in the surface of the skin

  • Allergens Substances that set off an allergic reaction in the bodys immune system

Atopic dermatitis

The most common form of eczema, atopic dermatitis does not require direct contact with allergens or irritants. Instead, its most likely the result of genetics and/or immune system dysfunction. When some substances get inside the body, they can trigger an allergic reaction that shows up on the skin in the form of dermatitis symptoms.

Who Gets Allergic Eyelid Contact Dermatitis

Allergic eyelid contact dermatitis can occur in anyone. It is no more likely in those with known sensitive skin or atopic eczema than it is in people that have previously had no skin problem.

Contact allergy usually develops after repeated previous contact with the allergen, so it is not necessarily a new substance that has triggered the allergy.

Treatment For Eye Complications Linked To Eczema

There are many creams and ointments for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, ranging from over-the-counter preparations to prescription corticosteroid creams, Seitzman says.

Never use any of these on the eye area without consulting a doctor, because, as research published in 2017 in the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice suggests, the use of topical steroids may be associated with glaucoma, probably from the cream seeping into the eyes.

In some cases, your doctor or dermatologist may recommend treatment by an ophthalmologist.

Anytime inflamed eyes and eyelids are associated with decreased vision, an ophthalmologist should be brought in as part of the evaluation team, Seitzman says. When steroids are used around and in the eyes, it is very important for an ophthalmologist to follow along so that eye pressure can be monitored. Steroids can affect the eyes in several ways, and monitoring for these side effects requires specialized tools to measure and visualize eye health.

Ultimately, while eczema of the skin around the eyes can be challenging to control, with proper treatment it can be managed and you can protect your vision.
