What Products Should I Use

Youll need to check with your physician on which products are recommended. Im including several product recommendations below that may be options for many individuals with ACD.

The products below do not contain any of the common triggers of ACD. They do not contain any synthetic fragrance additives, natural fragrance additives, botanicals, formaldehyde, methylchloroisothiazolinone, or lanolin.

Some are available at major retailers, and others must be ordered via phone or website.

Note that the ingredients of these products are accurate at the time of this article. Since product formulations often change over time, however, always check product labels prior to use, or check with your physician prior to use.

Also note that every product must contain some additives, and some people are allergic to less common substances. Therefore, if these recommendations do not help, then you may require further testing.

It can take up to 8 weeks of allergen avoidance for your skin to recover. You should check with your physician about a recommendation or prescription for a medicated ointment to use on your eyelids during this time to help with the inflammation.

Investigate The Products You Are Using

But if you cant think of anything new that could be causing your symptoms, then it might help to stop using one product at a time, to see if you can identify the cause. Some product manufacturers change their formulations, meaning that you could suddenly become allergic or sensitive to a product youve used for many years.

Can I Treat My Eyelid Dermatitis With Vaseline

If you’re dealing with the red, flaking, itchy rash that goes along with eyelid dermatitis, you’ll find that moisturizing your skin will help provide some relief. It’s important to remember a few important points though.

  • Choose the right moisturizer. The wrong product may contain chemicals to which you are allergic, which would just keep the rash going.

  • Pure Vaseline petroleum jelly would be one good option, as long as it does not contain any added fragrance or flavorings. This is a really important point! I’ve had parents buy Vaseline in the baby aisle, and that version actually contains fragrance.

  • I don’t recommend Vaseline intensive care lotion, or any other lotion, to treat allergic reactions of the eyelids. Lotions contain a lot of water, and a lot of preservatives.

  • Another option would be 100% pure coconut oil

  • Note that although these moisturizers may help soothe the skin, they don’t actually treat the inflammation.

  • If you have severe redness, flaking, and/or itching, see your physician. He or she will typically prescribe an anti-inflammatory cream or ointment to help calm down the skin inflammation of eyelid dermatitis

How to Naturally Heal Eyelid Eczema

There are other reasons you might wind up with a rash on your eyelids, like contact dermatitis, Gary Goldenberg, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, tells SELF. Thats when something that comes into contact with the skin on or around your eyelids causes an allergic reaction, the Mayo Clinic explains. Knowing exactly whats actually causing the rash on your eyelids will help you treat it as best as possible.

If you do have atopic dermatitis on your eyelids, youll want to do your best to avoid your triggers. This can range from pretty easy to completely ludicrous, depending on what specifically incites your eczema. If you cant steer clear of your triggers, or if doing so isnt enough to calm your eyelid eczema, you may need some extra help.

To treat atopic dermatitis, experts will often recommend topical corticosteroids to battle inflammation, the Mayo Clinic says, but these can be too strong on your delicate eyelid skin. If your doctor decides a corticosteroid cream is the best treatment for your case of eczema, theyll likely only prescribe it for a short period of time because it can cause thinning of your eyelids and the skin around your eyes, Cynthia Bailey, M.D., a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and president and CEO of Advanced Skin Care and Dermatology Inc., tells SELF. This treatment needs to be supervised by a physician, Dr. Bailey says.

What Causes Eczema On Eyelids

Contact dermatitis can be the main cause and it can be generally categorized into two different categories:

  • Allergic Eyelid Eczema
  • Irritant Eyelid Eczema

Allergic: A types of eczema caused when your eyes come in a direct contact with the allergens. It can develop when your immune system provides a negative response to a particular substance that comes in direct contact. This is the main reason why your favorite eye makeup causes dry skin. The allergic reaction can arise at any time giving you red, irritated, itchy, flaky and dry skin. In general, allergic contact dermatitis involves 50% 75% of all eyelid eczema cases and the allergic reaction can last for weeks thus, affecting your skin condition.

Irritant: This particular type can be caused when the skin of eyes touches an irritating substance. The area around the eye will possess stinging, burning sensation, irritation, and dry skin, especially on the upper and lower eyelids.

What Can Cause Eczema Around The Eyes

Ask the Ecz-perts: How do you treat eyelid eczema?

There are three main types of eyelid eczema – atopic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. We go into more detail on each in the section below.

Unfortunately, it can be tricky working out the cause of our symptoms. The eyes are prone to developing eczema because the skin around the eyes is very thin, with a rich blood flow and very little fat.

Atopic contact dermatitis is caused by an immune reaction to something that youre allergic to that youve used around your eyes. The immune system creates antibodies called immunoglobulin E which then causes the itching and irritation of eczema around the eyes.

Atopic dermatitis is usually caused by something internal, such as something youve eaten that youre allergic to, that causes the same symptoms as atopic contact dermatitis.

Irritant contact dermatitis also causes the same symptoms due to something youve used around the eyes, but instead of it being an allergen that youre allergic to, its an irritant.

Why Do I Have Red Itchy Flaky Eyelids

As a dermatologist, I’ve treated so many patients with red, itchy eyelids. This can–very understandably–be extremely uncomfortable, frustrating, and alarming.

While there are several causes of red, itchy eyelids, one of the most common is allergic contact dermatitis .

Here are a few key facts about ACD, which I’ll review in more detail below.

  • ACD is one type of allergic skin reaction.

  • It often affects the eyelids, because the eyelids are one of the most sensitive areas of the body.

  • It can develop even in people who have never had skin problems before

  • Although the rash on your eyelids may have started suddenly, the redness can last a long time.

  • For some of my patients, their red itchy eyelids have been ongoing for weeks or even months.

  • Just to make it more complicated, ACD is a type of delayed allergy.

  • This means that after exposure to a trigger, it usually takes 2-3 days before the rash shows up

  • There are different possible triggers for eyelid ACD, and these are almost always external exposures

How Does Allergic Eyelid Contact Dermatitis Occur

Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by an immune reaction to the trigger this is known as the allergen. This is often a substance that the patient has been exposed to many times previously without problem. The rash usually occurs one to several days after the contact with the allergen. This can make it difficult to identify the cause of the dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis involves a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction and involves immune memory cells.

What Causes Eczema On The Eyelids

The skin on your eyelids is very thin. It contains many blood vessels and little fat. This makes them sensitive to irritation and prone to allergic reactions.

Eyelid dermatitis has many causes and can be caused by contact with allergens or irritants.

1- For people with allergic contact dermatitis, symptoms may be the result of an allergic reaction that causes inflammation of the skin. Symptoms occur when your immune system produces antibodies in response to a substance to which you are allergic. You may be allergic to pollen, latex, contact lens solutions, perfumes, etc. Dr. Heba Abdallah states that food allergies, such as milk, egg, peanut, and wheat allergies, have been identified as triggers for eczema in some people. Similarly, added sugars, refined carbohydrates, and gluten can trigger eczema.

2- Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the area around your eyelids comes into contact with an irritating substance. You do not have to be allergic to the substance. For example, eye makeup or eye cream can cause irritant contact dermatitis even if you are not allergic to any of its ingredients.

Many substances that cause allergic contact dermatitis also cause irritant contact dermatitis. The difference between these two conditions is determined by your immune systems response. Whichever type of eyelid dermatitis you have, it can result in itching and discomfort. Both types can be treated with medication or lifestyle changes.

What Can Be The Common Culprits For Eyelid Eczema

Eczema On Eyelids

Makeup and Cosmetics: Women are obsessed with a makeup. The chemical compounds in cosmetics may irritate and initiate an irritant reaction of the eyelids. Few of the common sources from the eye makeup include:

Makeup brushes and these applicators can be the main cause for eczema flare-ups. The bristles of the brushes can be made of synthetic materials or animal fur that can initiate an allergic reaction.

Few of the cosmetics those possess metals like lead, nickel, cobalt, and chromium can cause the skin condition making it worse. These are mainly the allergic metals found in mascara, eyebrow pencils and more eye makeup products.

Nails: Yes, not to forget that you are in a direct contact with the allergens through your nails. It can be seen that many people subconsciously touch their eyes throughout the day, bite their nails and this can turn out to be a major cause as well. Eyelid eczema result from simply rubbing or touching the eyes even if a reaction on the fingers, nails or hands are not present.

Exposure to Chemicals: The use of chemical compounds can be found in approximately many daily needs products like cleaners, laundry, air fresheners, skin care products, perfumes, and more. Dr. Heba Abdallah emphasizes that taking care of your skin condition is the best way to improve your symptoms and get some relief.

If a trigger for your symptoms can be identified, eliminating it will be your first and best line of defense. If a trigger food is found, it will be important to eliminate it from your diet.

According to Dr. Heba Abdallah, remedies for eczema on the eyelids include moisturizers, steroids, and calcineurin inhibitors.

1- Moisturize. Moisturizing creams can relieve dryness and itching. A wide range of creams is available with and without a prescription. They are most effective in treating mild dermatitis.

2- Use calcineurin inhibitors. This medication is used to treat inflammatory disorders, including atopic dermatitis. It can be applied as a cream or taken by mouth. It should be used with caution because it can suppress immune function.

3- Use corticosteroids. Steroid creams can be applied directly to the eyelids to address inflammation and reduce dryness. For extensive cases of dermatitis or eczema, corticosteroids can be taken in pill form. The strength of the medication depends on the severity of the symptoms.

Corticosteroid creams should be used with caution because they can lose some of their effectiveness if applied for too long.
